I have a chance to trade a jonboat for a ruger AR. Is there any reason not to get the AR? Plan is to get rid of the current boat and buy a more family friendly boat in a year or two. This seems like an even-money deal. Boat and trailer worth roughly 600 and a gently used AR...

I’m very familiar with AR rifles and carbines, I just haven’t had or messed with one made by Ruger. I know it’s the basic mode with clamshell handguards so I will be swapping for a cheap FFHG. I have tools still as I have built a few and have helped others with their builds.

If the boat is valued at $600, then you have the heavier value, and the other would need to sweeten the deal on top of a used clamshell type AR-556. There have been several instances in the last handful of years the AR-556’s could be bought for $400-450 new, regularly pricing on the street around $600, so a used model bringing $600 value in trade is a bit heavy to me. All bets are off right now, I wouldn’t pay panic up-pricing, but some folks want an AR RIGHT NOW and are such willing to pay more than I would.

Nothing at all wrong with a Ruger AR. I have one of the MPR's and a Ruger AR pistol. I like them both a lot.

I know guns have gone crazy lately, but the MPR should be a fair trade if the boat is worth $600. The basic Ruger AR new was selling for $400-$450 last time I looked. They are great rifles, I'm just not sure this is an even trade. On the other hand things may have changed enough in the last 2 months. If you think it is a fair trade then you will be getting a good rifle.

From everything I hear, they're good rifles. It is worth noting, in case you plan on upgrading it, that the front sight and barrel nut/delta ring are proprietary. Nothing insurmountable if you decide to change things out, just a bit different

The Ruger is a great rifle. I’ve owned one for a couple years, and it is very well built and reliable. I think though in recent years the price has fallen. A used one for $600 seems a little strong. That said if it seems fair to you and both parties are happy there is nothing wrong with the firearm.

I have owned a Ruger AR for about four years now. It is a exceptionally reliable gun. I have not put any optics on it and shoot it with iron sights. It is more accurate than my eyes will allow me to shoot with irons. Can't recommend it enough for a budget AR.

Ditto the last two posts. Ruger's delta ring being proprietary isn't a bad thing, it unscrews to allow easy changing of handguards, I have two, the latest a AR-556MOE with magtech furniture and the base version, on which I removed the cheap Ruger clamshell forend and put a Midlands Industries quadrail on.
I agree with others the price is steep for a used one. But, it's your $$$$$.

Academy Sports has Ruger AR-556 clamshell models listed for $650 new right now. There’s a seller with several on GB right now, one closing in 30min with $578 current bid. $600-650 is the top end street price the standard AR-556’s have brought in recent years. $200 over their minimum sale prices.

The MPR is an upgraded model which costs a few hundred extra over the base clamshell model - which the OP referenced as the trade stake.

I have a Ruger AR556 that I have now used to put about 3000 ish rounds down range . I have yet to have a single hiccough with it. I mostly feed it Federal Lake City 855 62grainers . I only use it as a range toy, but would not have any reservations about putting it to work. It is surprisingly accurate for an out of the box no modification rifle.

I got it. It’s a ruger 08500 but the sight tower and handguards have been swapped out to a low profile gas block and a cheap quad rail. I figure it’s a $500 gun and I got another $50 worth of stuff. The boat was worth somewhere in the 600 range but now I don’t have it in my driveway taking up space and making me want to spend more money on it. I will swap to a different handguard, but I can sell this one easy enough. It did come with a set of MBUS sights.

My SR556 has been very good, very accurate.
Have you used the jonboat in 2yrs?
Do you already have an AR.?
I'm not a huge AR fan, but they can lay certainly down the hoodoo.

This is my 3rd AR and yes I have used it in 2 years, but not much. Guarantee I cold count it’s usage on 1 hand for each of the last couple years, and this year was set to be a 1 or 2 use year as well, possibly 0 uses. Hard to go fishing when the wife is pregnant and/or home with a newborn.

I love to be on the water, I'm a boater.
You can't fish from an AR.
AR is easier to store, and no annual licensing or registration .
You cant shoot three ARs at once.

Are you talking 16' deep Jon or what?

^^^^^^It’s already a done deal.

I suppose different people are in different situations, but if you’re happy and he’s happy, it was a good deal for both.

I had a 19’ jonboat with a like new 4 stroke 60 hp Mercury. Hadn’t used it in years and tired of paying for registration and insurance and not using it. I was happy to get the value of the motor alone just so it would go away. Continually moving a boat on a trailer is a PITA.

How much time, work and effort are you going to invest to make a $50 difference?

In my area boats are hard to sell. Happiest days in a boaters life : day you get it and day you sell or sink it.
I had a 18' fish& ski open bow that i got in trade for some work i did on a scuzzy old van. It only cost $1500 to get her in the water (stickers, bumpers, covers, various rigging, safety equipment, on & on & on) kept it 5 years and traded it straight across for a professional ordnance ar (the thing that later turned into the carbon 15) - horrible trade, that plastic terror jammed like clockwork and the stovepiped brass melted cunks of reciever all over the place. I sold the rifle during the obama scare with full disclosure- so i did ok.
I'll get another boat but im not trading anything for an AR.
Soumds like you did better than i did though.
Good luck

I work out of a small skiff... and I'm probably a poster child for "Be careful what you wish for"... Most boats are pretty much yard ornaments that get used less and less over time. Then all you have to do is watch its value diminish the longer you keep it... Hope that new rifle works right and gets used as much as possible.

"Aren't boats fun?". From a guy who tows his 20,000+ miles a year, year in and year out...

The Ruger ARs have tended to stray from mil-spec, more so than other brands. For example, their guns that have a bayonet lug, often have a non-standard distance between the bayonet lug and the flash hider. This makes it impossible to mount a standard bayonet. Then why have the bayonet lug in the first place?

Son has a Ruger 556, bought used..and a great rifle. Accurate, 100% reliable. Not expensive.

Semi V. Old school Sears/Ted Williams brand. Rough as a cob where it had been gutted and rebuilt several times. It currently was partially gutted and needed about $100 and probably 3 or 4 hours to get it back together.

Main things are:
-No longer my problem to repair/maintain.
-No longer eating my money in taxes.
-No longer taking up space in the driveway.
-My girls have their spot back to play -basketball in the driveway
-it’s not aggravating me to see it and not get to use it.

Enjoy that AR!
I have several hobbies. The shooting sports are the easiest. No licensing fees or baling hay, scooping pop, building fences.
Guns store easily and hold their value.
I keep telling mrs farmer what great investments I am making.
