On my New Model Flattop Blackhawk I saw this large silver colored part under the grips that I can’t seem to find in any schematic. It is at the terminus of the hammer spring strut and sticks out about 1/16” from both sides of the grip frame when looking straight down from the top.

Can someone tell me what this is called and what it does?

Thanks!

They didn't tell you the new models have a lock in them? Didn't they give you the key?

Sorry, messing with you, no idea what it is, but it did look like it had a keyhole.

Yes that is the internal lock Ruger put in some of their revolvers.

You can always buy a new grip frame and replaced it if you don't like it.

Personally I would put the stocks back on and shoot away.

Thanks, I thought that that was it but I wasn’t sure.

This was an unfired used purchase off GB and it didn’t come with box/papers/lock key. None of my older Rugers seem to have this system and the schematic diagrams I was looking at from Brownells/Numrich didn’t show it either.

As always, THR members have the answers! :)

Stay safe.

I had the lock in two of my old New Vaqueros. (That just doesn’t sound right)
Never had any issues with them. The RNV I have now does not have the lock.

The key that the lock uses looks like this

Since Ruger no longer makes Blackhawks with the internal lock, they also no longer offer the key. There are keys for sale on eBay. Do you need one? If you do, let me know- I have a spare I can send you.

I have read, but not verified, that a mainspring seat from a Ruger Bearcat can be used to "bridge the gap" so to speak if the lock is removed. If you get new grip panels, be sure that they are cut for the lock.
