Why I Buy Ruger

I had a 9 year old LCP with a lot of "love" that jammed on me one day, locked up with a spent case in the chamber. Sent it to Ruger, they sent me a brand new LCP. I knew that LCP was on it's last legs and was already planning on replacing it, but Ruger kept me going for at least another 9 years.

Doesn't bother you that it needed to go back to the factory in the first place?
Not at all!
All things that are used weekly eventually break or need a little repair. As a mechanic I accept that reality.
I personally put a lot of miles on my little LC9, which is my only 9mm. To me it’s tool.
How many rounds ? Don’t really know, but probably 1-5k/year and I’ve owned it maybe 8 years. On the low side that’s 8000 rounds
And almost all were 115 gr boolit reloads.
Yeap, I don’t have any problems with those numbers.

Well, I could have made the same post as the OP about my Bersa Thunder. But that still wouldn't have made it any more recommendable. It's not and I won't.

Ruger CS is great because they get more practice than anyone else. They still make some great guns, but I've had to deal with too many issues. Over the years my brother and I combined have had to send 5 guns back to them, and had to send defective parts back to them more times than I can remember to get them replaced. There were several others that just wouldn't shoot straight and I sent them down the road for something else rather than send it back

I still own several of their guns and many are a good value for the dollar. I think the 10-22 is the best in its class but just about everything else they make comes in 2nd place to similar guns made by other manufacturers.

To their credit they've always made it right, and in a timely manner. But over the same 40 year span I've only had one other gun that had issues from all manufacturers combined. And that was a 1st generation Smith Sigma. That was Smith's 1st try at a "Glock" style pistol and they had some growing pains. This was just about the time the 2nd gen Sigma's were being introduced and Smith replaced my pistol with a new 2nd gen pistol.

One out of the 3 Rugers here has required service. The issue was with the finish. I also adjusted tension on the extractor of the same pistol (this is not uncommon with 1911's). My experience was very similar to the OP's. The Rugers I own are not the nicest guns there are. They have worked well for me & I do believe they are a good value for the amount of money spent.

I have one Ruger pistol and I like it. I like my M&P's better but they cost more. I think Rugers in general are solid for the money, I just don't own that many for whatever reason.

Wait until you get an LCP that doesn't chamber or cycle.

They were cutting the chambers way under GO and the window on the slide was also undersized.

The line QC doesn't even know what headspace is (definition wise) and checks it by dropping in GO and NOGO gauges and then just letting the slide drop on them.

At one point they were taking barrels and matching them to slides just so they could pass. Instead of just making interchangeable parts....

But hey those diversity hires are still a good idea.. right?

I like a lot of Rugers some not so much. I love the LCR9mm and LCR22. I have owned two LC9's, ran reliable as heck from day one. Yes, I have had Rugers sent back for for repair. I have a SR22 that after 10 years of heavy use Ruger sent me many replacement parts free. Others guns I have sent back and repaired quickly. and one even replaced. Yes all things including guns( well not all guns) break down and Ruger is notorious for the Best Customer Service. I realize that their is one Manufacture that does not even have a Customer Service Dept because there has never been a time in history when one needed repair. Their guns are perfect from day one and for the a minimum of 250,000 rds. But sadly, all other Manufacturers do have some that need a part or repair and it pays to back the gun up even if only as a piece of mind.
Bravo to Ruger.
By the way loving my SR9C and built like a tank and still going strong.

18 Sigs, 21 years (7 p365's) - Zero back to factory
13 S&W's, 25 years, Zero back to factory
12 Glocks, 25 Years, Zero back to factory
Hundreds of guns over the years, only one went back to the factory- and it was a Ruger.

On the other hand, several dozen of those were broke when I bought 'em and I fixed 'em myself. The did fix it right the first time and for free, so its all good.:)

How much ammo per gun do you shoot them each month? I do not own that many guns of one brand, but I am sure there are Ruger fan Boys that own that many that have never had to be sent in as well.

Of all the reasons to buy a firearm, IMHO, the quality of a certain brand’s customer service dept. is probably the least compelling reason for me to want to buy that brand’s product. I really hate sending my guns off to be worked on. I would much rather have a good working relationship with a local gunsmith since I make sure that I will be be back if I’m not happy with the service for any reason. I’ve had mostly good luck getting my guns worked on and only a few really bad experiences.

My intention was only to show Great Customer Service in the firearms industry:
One phone call got me an RMA
Free shipping label to them
3 updates along the way as to its progress
Timely Repair
Total turnaround time of less than 30 days

Again, to me, that is a terrific no hassle service!

Unlike another make revolver I have with a lifetime warranty that cost me $66 to ship it to them, well over a month to get it back, and the worse part- it came back unfixed!

None of my Rugers have required service but neither has my Glock, S&W or Brownings.
My Ruger has (broken frame) my Glock has (broken frame rail, 2 of my S&Ws have (Frame/sight groove cut improperly, endshake), my Kel-Tec has (broken trigger bar, broken slide, my FN/Browning has (false slide lock), my Dan Wesson has (slide stop jammed the slide halfway back), my CZ has (multiple issues, out of spec DA roller and trigger bar spring, hammer follow), my SIG P938 has 3X (FTEs, gave up), my Taurus has 2X (broken rear sight). There may be more I’ve forgotten about. I’ve been impressed with all of these companies’ responses other than Kel-Tec. CZ wasn’t great either but I wasn’t the original owner so I can’t blame them for not warranteeing it. They did offer to take a look at it for a hefty inspection fee.

Ruger has a reputation for taking care of their customers but they also have somewhat of a reputation for sending guns out the door that aren’t quite right, and finishing the QC process if and when they see them come back. Unfortunately this seems to be somewhat of the norm for lots of companies today. It must be cheaper or something.

That was Smith's 1st try at a "Glock" style pisto

No that was smith's first try at a Glock. Lol. They even got sued over it and Smith paid settlement out of court.

I've used Smith 3 times and got the same results. Under a month and no hassle. No cost. Sucks that 3 new revolvers had to go back but all were rectified.

Only have had two newer guns worked on: a Beretta Neos for a problem with the safety (sent out by the dealer and back within 10 days), and a S&W Model 686 with the firing pin and bushing recall (which I had done locally by an authorized S&W gunsmith).

Friend of mine bought a used stainless Ruger Vaquero in .44 Magnum which had a canted front sight on it. Dealer sent it in as warranty work and Ruger not only built a new barrel from scratch (no longer had that barrel in stock), but they polished the entire gun so the new barrel would match the rest of the revolver! All of this was free of charge! Now that's some great Customer Service!
