I sent a Ruger KP90D .45ACP that I purchase NOS from a local shop back to Ruger awhile back (the shop is now closed, or I would have started there).

It would FTE or stove pipe every third or fourth round with several types of ammo and different magazines. I own 5 other P90s and have NEVER had an issue with any of them,...EVER, (several have 5K plus rounds through them) as well as more than a dozen other Ruger's.

They returned it to me after two weeks with the same exact problem. So I paid the shipping the second time and sent it back. (FEDEX NDA $22)

Then they tell me it is going to cost me $35 "since it is a discontinued model and past the ONE YEAR INITAL WARRANTY (even though I had owned it a month at this point) and the LIFETIME WARRANTY has a $35 repair charge per repair (which I was not told the first time it was sent back).

So, I talk to a Manager named Debra at the Prescott, AZ repair shop and she says there is nothing she can do, pay the $35. So I pony up the money and get the gun back in about 3 weeks.

300 rounds later the recoil spring breaks :banghead: and the guide rod is worn, and back to Ruger again. Now they give me the choice of a voucher worth $400 for any new Ruger product, or my P90 back "repaired" with a new upper assembly and barrel, but that will cost me an additional $75!!!! :fire: and they will have to send it to an FFL, and not directly to me since it will get a new serial number. ?????

To this point I am in the hole $442.80+$22+$22+$35=$521.80 and I am seriously thinking about taking the $400 voucher and writing off the $122.

What do you guys think?

Every once in a while, a gun (from any manufacturer) comes along that just seems to never be quite right. Sounds like you are happy with the rest of your Rugers - I'd figure the $400 was more than a used "troubled" one was worth, and I try not to pass problems to others....I'd take the voucher and start fresh.

Wow, I guess we can throw Ruger in the Taurus/ SW mix now, eh ? I just got a new ruger rifle. I like how they politely skip the warranty completely- you don't have one.

At least with taurus its on their dime every time.

wow, that is a really crappy situation. if you really want the gun then you may want to take the $75 gamble (personally, this is most likely what i would do). if you feel like you have had enough of messing with it, the voucher is a mighty tempting option.

Following that logic, based on ONE example, Hi-Point is the very best firearm made because I have one that is accurate right out of the box and has never needed repair. In fact, I've never met anyone personally who had to have a Hi-Point repaired....

EVERY gun manufacturer has an occasional issue - even the $3k+ "custom" ones. So I guess if you're trying to put Ruger in with Taurus (which, I confess, I've never owned) and Smith & Wesson (which I've owned lots of trouble-free guns from), you'll have to add Kimber, Colt, Glock, CZ, Kahr, Sig, H&K, Beretta, Benelli, Savage, Mossberg, Remington....

Not Happy!!!

Why did you send it back to the factory for a recoil spring and worn guide rod???

Take the $400 voucher and run!

By getting the gun fixed and sent back to a FFL, you're going to be out another $100 but you can sell the gun....for maybe $400 if you're lucky but you dropped another $100... So, you'll only have $300 NET.

I empathize with your frustration to some degree. Did you mean you bought the gun used?

Many years ago I bought a KP90DC and had a problem with the slide. Bad galling under the pick-up rail where it rubbed the hammer. They diagnosed it as a problem with the heat treat and replaced the slide (no charge/new gun).

Over the years, and more rounds than I bothered to count back then (as I wasn't an armorer and wasn't used to doing periodic inspections/maintenance), I've replaced the mag catch, firing pin, extractor and a couple of guide rods (they do get worn, don't they?).

I've used factory recoil springs (original and revised/heavier ones) as well as those from Wolff. During one of my conversations with some of the factory folks, when I told them how much I'd fired my P90, one of them chuckled and suggested that it was probably time to replace it with a new one.

The P90 was a great, robust and durable design for its time. (It ought to be, having originally been envisioned as a 10mm.)

Personally, I never cared for the P97, nor the P345.

I liked how Ruger dimpled the magazine lips to help prevent round displacement (under recoil), but I was not exactly enthusiastic when they adopted the folded-spring follower and the shortened, weaker mag spring.

I still have a fair number of spare/repair parts put back so I can keep mine running.

I think I have upwards of 20 magazines for it.

I don't carry it much any more, although it still sees some occasional range use.

I've only known a handful of other LE & non-LE that owner and used them.

I was a bit saddened when Ruger discontinued them.

I can't presume to suggest what you do, but if that particular gun works when all is said & done ... you have an expensive "extra" of that model. If they make something else you fancy, consider using the voucher. Dunno.

I think "Buy Springfield Armory or Kimber." Lifetime warantees with exceptional customer service. SA took a 10 year old discontinued 1911A1 that I bought used back (on their shipping dime each way) and made it work like glass. It was back in my holster in less than three weeks and hasn't had another problem in over two years now. Dad's a Kimber guy and had similar luck with them.

Just to clairify, the gun was purchased "New" but had been sitting in the store for a couple years.

Get the voucher and save a little more and buy a sr1911. I love them. As for customer service I can't speak. As for the person saying "put them in the same boat as Taurus and s&w". Go troll somewhere.

MC - haven't seen dot-matrix print and that type of paper in quite some time. Thanks for the cool photo.

Questions

Ruger KP90D .45ACP that I purchase NOS from a local shop back to Ruger awhile back

When was this purchased? Are you sure it was NIB? How long did you wait to shoot it? Kind of immaterial at this point I know.

Here in AZ, I've encountered a few shops that will try and sell a barely used gun as NIB... especially at the shows it seems. Been a while (5+ years) since I caught one though.

But with this...

I own 5 other P90s and have NEVER had an issue with any of them,...EVER, (several have 5K plus rounds through them) as well as more than a dozen other Ruger's.

I doubt you got suckered on NIB.

With your 15K+ rounds experience through P90s, what did you diagnose the FTE problem as? NONE of the others EVER had a problem?

They returned it to me after two weeks with the same exact problem.

What did the paperwork that accompanied the pistol back say? What did they do?

So I paid the shipping the second time and sent it back.

I'd have been firm that they send a call tag out to correct their repair. Did you ask and they refused? Escalate at that point.

Refused again? Get a local smith to look at it.

$22 is actually a very good price to ship a handgun.

ONE YEAR INITAL WARRANTY

Ruger doesn't offer a warranty on their products; doing so would obligate them under the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act and they prefer the flexibility that not having one provides. Perhaps they give more leeway on service during the first year.

300 rounds later the recoil spring breaks and the guide rod is worn, and back to Ruger again.

Why on earth send it back to Ruger for this? Shipping is more then the parts. Take a picture of your 6 P90s along with the broken spring/worn rod and email it to Ruger service. I bet they drop a new guide and a handful of springs in a mailer and send it off to you gratis.

or my P90 back "repaired" with a new upper assembly and barrel, but that will cost me an additional $75!!!! and they will have to send it to an FFL, and not directly to me since it will get a new serial number.

Isn't the frame the serialized part on a P90? Even if it isn't, I believe there is a mechanism where by a manufacturer can replace a firearm directly to an individual. Inquire about it.

To this point I am in the hole

You aren't in the hole, you've spent a little bit more money than planned on a mass produced item and perhaps more than you needed to (shipping).

Amortized over your 6 total P90s it's trifling.

Compared to the cost of the ammo you claim to have run through them (handloading notwithstanding) it's miniscule.

What do you guys think?

I'd get in trouble :(

By stating up front that I have mentioned hundreds of times that my old P90 was an absolute dead reliable workhorse, I don't want you guys to think I am closing this because of a bias.

I am closing it because there is nothing to be gained from speculation past the fact that the OP unfortunately got a lemon and isn't happy he had to shell out for shipping twice. Those are the facts, and there isn't anything really more to be gained from just complaining and making wild speculation.
