Hi Guys,

I'd like to store an AR-15 in my Tacoma and need a way to secure it. The only things I'm finding via Google are pistol safes and they look pretty rinky-dink. Are there any quality rifle safes for a Tacoma?

Thanks to Breechface below for pointing out that I didn't offer adequate information about the truck. Sorry, I'm old and I had a brain fart.

2012 Tacoma PreRunner Double Cab 4x2 V6

Thanks...

I'm just in the process of buying a Tacoma. I would say that, like just about any vehicle, it's not very secure for storing long guns. Your best bet is to minimize your exposure (keeping guns in the vehicle as little as possible), and hiding them as best you can.

Unless you absolutely need a bed, test drive a 4Runner while you're at the dealership.

Interior is way more roomy, seating position is more comfortable, and there is a ton more head room. I had a 2014 Toyota Hilux 5 speed manual diesel 4x4 w/ rear locker as my company car in Africa. Loved that Hilux. Test drove 2 - 6 speed manual 2019 Tacomas (Off Road and Sport) and test drove 2 4Runners. Got the 4Runner Off Road. The Taco was just too cramped for me being 6'4 225.

I figure I'll eventually get a utility trailer for hauling. I kept my old 2006 Nissan Frontier pickup. Wasn't worth trading in on the 4Runner with all the $ I've put into it.

Back to the OP - here's how I store rifles in my 4Runner.

Road trips. Note a cased rifle fits in the same location. For better security a cable lock can be thread through the ejection port, out the magazine well, and around a seat leg.

Thanks BreechFace. I've edited the original post above. It's a 2012 double cab prerunner.

Here you go.

That said, a major part of a gun safe’s security is the fact it’s bolted in your home. If someone steals your truck and any desire to break into your vault, they are going to get in.
I had originally said a Truck Vault, but was thinking SUV as my friends with them only have them in SUVs where they are hidden; didn't know they made them for truck beds.

The basic problem with securing a (long) gun in a vehicle is that the whole vehicle might be stolen, and then the thieves could take their leisure in extracting the gun. This is a problem that you don't have when (a) carrying the gun on your person, or (b) leaving it at home. That said, vehicle carry in a car, where you have a lockable trunk, is more viable than in a truck with no trunk. In any case, keeping the gun out of sight is key.

BTW, Tacomas (judging from the Tacoma World forum, which I just joined) are quite popular with gun owners. I wouldn't doubt that there's a lot of crossover appeal.

My 2018 Tacoma has a compartment under the seat where the jack and such are stored. There is a good bit of extra room there. I don't know if you can lock that area.

Anything that slows down the smash and grab thief is a good thing.

If you need to tow the Taco is better than the 4Runner, both have off road capability that verges on the Jeep Rubicon and having both a 06 Tacoma TRD and a 05 TJ Rubicon, I have compared them. Yeah, the Rubicon is the king but it cannot tow a center console boat, carry firewood, carry four normal sized people or cross the country effortlessly and comfortably. Starting to get old but I would drive it to the moon and back if there was a road or at least a trail.

You might look on Tacoma World forum and ask those folks. I am not going to leave an AR in a vehicle. Since the Tacoma is in super high demand, is the number one vehicle year in and out in resale they are also occasionally a theft target as a result.

Thanks to everyone for the comments/suggestions. I ended up going with the Lock'er Down although the lock mechanism seems sort of flimsy to me. I ordered the console safe ($329 for the extra thick lid) and the behind the back seat safe ($850) also. We'll see if spending almost $1.,200 was a stupid thing to do.

Thanks again...
