Durham Hopes Billboards Send Message To Criminals

POSTED: 1:40 pm EDT August 9, 2004
UPDATED: 6:46 pm EDT August 9, 2004

DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham city leaders hope criminals finally get the message through billboards that crime will not be tolerated.

This week, billboards will go up along Durham roadways as well as in DATA buses in an effort to reduce crime.

In recent years, the city buses have become moving targets for gunfire.

do they have ccw there? if so it might help if the board say 1 in X number of citizens are armed.

They're sending a message, all right--that they're basically powerless to do anything really effective to reduce crime.

How about hanging the headless corpses of criminals from streetlamps in downtown Durham? That seems like a pretty effective message.

Okay, I tried uploading all these images to the forum but gremlins got in the way.

Anyway, as a public service to the people of Durham NC I designed 4 billboards (using Oleg's Images). If the city of Durham would like to use them , they should contact Oleg about license.

Keep in mind these are just comps ... not what I'd consider "finished product" but you get the idea.

I also have no idea where Chief Chalmers stands on CCW, the 2A and all that (I expect some citizen of Durham will probably post here about how Chief Chalmers is a gun grabber or something) :p

My, my Zundfolge!!!

I like the last one, especially. "Shootin' criminals......it's a SPORT!!"

Those are good! Thanks for putting a smile on my face for the day!! :D

Zundfolge,

Wow! If only they'd use something like that- and mean it... . But your ideas would horrify them, Durham being only slightly less prone to criminal- coddling than Chapel Hill. Great effort on your part tho, you have real talent.

I posted the "news story" as it appeared, 1) because it was such great journalism, failing to give any clue as to what the billboards might have to say, and 2) because the story, as brief as it was, indicated that city buses (where the billboards would also be posted) often served as moving targets for the criminal element which the billboards are intended to intimidate.

As far as the "Welcome to Durham" theme is concerned, take a look at
http://www.welcome2durham.com/inside/story.htm . It provides a somewhat different take on things.

Good work Z!

The movie clip... eccccgh. I lived in a not-so-nice part of Durham one summer with a friend about ten years ago.. looks worse now than it was then, and it was no picnic then.

Talk about a lot of NHI incidents. Seems like the honest residents would do well to do a little housecleaning of their own.

I'm pretty sure the actual billboards in Durham just state the strict penalties for crimes committed with an illegal gun. (yes they specifically say, "illegal"). They are similar to the ones that have been up in Virginia for years.

There was a news item from the UK a few months ago about a senior police official who sent warning letters to repeat offenders, warning them that they were being "closely watched". Zundfolges billboards would give them the impression that they are in the crosshairs. Mo' bettah message, IMO:what:

The documentary does not live up to its name or expectations, having seen the thing for its preview. Not very well put together, either.

Suffice it to say Mickey Moore could do a better job.

Nathanael - how would you propose to hang a headless corpse? I thought hanging usually meant by the neck :neener:

I think it's a good idea

I wonder what the crime rate is now and what it will be after the banners go up. Will it make a differance? probably not, but it is a good move in the direction of defense with a firearm is correct action. Did any anti's make a big fuss over the billboards?

Those aren't real billboards, carryin_1. The real billboards will probably be something wussified and ineffective. In fact, if they are anything like those damned "Truth" Crazyworld commercials, they will have the reverse effect.

*Goes to light a smoke just because he thought about one of those commercials*
