Oh, it started innocuously enough: gonna run to town and pick up some feed from the local feed store, swing by my cousin's car-lot to shoot the bull for a bit, and then come home and work on some shop projects. When I got to my cousin's, he showed me this:

"This" is a Taurus Gaucho, in 357 Mag. Now, I needed another 357 like I needed a hole in my head, but when he offered it to me for what I consider a good deal, I couldn't resist. It is like new, fired very little if at all, and had plain black checkered grips on it. Those lasted exactly long enough to get home, since I remembered I had these "faux stag" one's in the parts box (gave $2 for 'em at a pawnshop ages ago). After a bit of fitting, they went right on. Afterwards, I took it out in the back yard and popped off 15 rounds. Sights are right on, the action (4 clicks, like a Colt, but with a transfer bar) is very smooth, and the trigger is wonderfully light and crisp. It grouped respectably at 15 yards with my 158gr plinking load, though I forgot to get any photos to document the results. The grips are a touch thick for my liking but do feel good in the hand, much better than the thin, cheap ones that were on it.

Overall, I'm rather pleased with my "unintentional" gun purchase. It'll be a good one to carry around the farm and when fishing or hiking, etc. I'm not too deep in it and have really grown to like it. Anyhow, not trying to brag, but I know y'all like it when some of us post I purchases so I figured I'd give ya something to look at this evening.

Enjoy,

Mac

Thanks guys, I'm glad you've enjoyed it. It's supposed to come an absolute typhoon tomorrow or I'd try for some groups with it.

its neat when an uncommon one like yours makes an appearance on THR.

Thanks. If I'm honest, that's what got me started on THR in the first place.

They don't have an outstanding reputation, but I am unsure of the details.

It's something to do with the transfer bar mechanism, best I can tell. But from what I've read, the problems are pretty evident early on. This one performed flawlessly today, and I hope it will continue to do so.

Excellent pickup. Of course, now you need a Gaucho holster rig for it. And a pork pie hat. :)

I had forgotten about the Taurus Gaucho single actions. I remember they were priced well under the going rate for comparable Ruger and Italian single actions. Then before I had a chance to get one they were discontinued. This was quite a few years ago. There were reports of problems with some of the parts (not sure but I think it had to do with some of the cylinder pins and the transfer bars), causing light strikes and misfires. Don't know if that's why they were discontinued but it may be difficult to find replacement parts if the need arises. Hope everything goes okay with the one you got.

I had one of those some years ago, back when CDNN had lots of them. Never had a problem when shooting it.
I just wish my small hands could hold single actions better. Oh well, it was a very nice revolver, probably the nicest I ever had.

I will say this: I have a Heritage big-bore in 357 as well, and the Taurus' action is much smoother. The Taurus also seems to be more accurate and shoots to the sights better than the Heritage, which has a tendency to shoot to the left. At some point when the weather fairs, I'll put the two side by side and compare them. Maybe report back here with the results?

I was thinking as I read that the Gaucho came about and disappeared roughly in the timeframe that Taurus acquired Heritage. It’s nice to see that somebody has both to lay side by side to see what the differences are.

Taurus does a fairly nice job at bluing, I have seen several Tauri that have had nice finished like your over the years, very nice. I had a Model 85 in the late 80's that was superbly polished and blued. Enjoy.

That's pretty! Sounds like it runs great as well. I hadn't heard of The Goucho. I've got a friend who is trying to get me into Cowboy Action Shooting but I can't justify a new set of guns. I got excited when I thought about a brace of Tauri revolvers.

That Taurus is very nice. I was wondering if it was a Colt when I saw the "Made in Brazil" on the frame. I really like the case-hardened hammer.

If you are going to make an impulse buy, it's better to buy something nice like that, which can be resold easily.

Personally, I almost bought a Galesi 32 automatic a day or two ago, just because it was so pretty: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/894332301

But that's all the gun had going for it. If it's like the Galesi 25's, the sights barely exist, and Galesi pistols were not remarked on for their quality back when they were new. I think they were the kind of thing that the Gun Control Act of 1968 was intended to keep out (and which subsequently created a whole minor industry of cast-zinc automatics in the US). Also, the seller calling himself "badboybill" gave me pause.

Anyway, if the OP needed another 357 like he needs a hole in the head, I needed another 32 like...like I need TWO holes in my head. (I am not real sharp today. Dang time change!)

Good call on the Galesi. I had a whole collection of Galesi's - .22S, .22LR, .25ACP, .32ACP - kept them for years, still have the .22LR. Except for the .22LR - which is surely a fluke - they were all less reliable than a Lucas refrigerator.

I laughed out loud at that even though I don't know anything about Lucas refrigerators. (I will Google them). That Galesi sure was pretty, but I have a beat up little Rigarmi in 22 LR, and I think it's six of one, half of dozen of the other. I have not fired the Rigarmi yet. The sights would have been invisible when I was 20, let alone now. Neat takedown, though.

I don’t want to stray off topic but it’s a joke any British car or motorcycle owner knows well. Lucas Electric is why the Brits drink room temperature beer. The British don’t build computers because Lucas couldn't find a way to make them leak oil. Lucas Electrics once made a vacuum cleaner - it was the only product they ever made that didn't suck.
