Hello. I have fired alot of shells through Mossberg 500, Winchester 1200 and Remington 11/87. My question is, Is there a smoother way to manipulate the bolt release on a 870. It just seems more awkward than the release on the 500 and 1200. Want to like the 870 . Thoughts?

I don't understand your problem. If you fire the gun the bolt automatically releases. If you want to open the bolt on a closed gun without shooting it, you press up on the release button. What trouble are you having? I've been shooting 870s since the fifties and this the first time I've heard of a "bolt release" problem.

What's so hard about it? It's easier to manipulate with the gun shouldered than the two other pumps you mention, and no harder to do so with it off the shoulder. Left handed, it is a little harder when shouldered, but much less so than the other two pumps. Still easy unshouldered.

Perhaps this is a case of operator headspace and timing.

Take your hand off the pistol grip, ride it forward in front of the trigger guard.

Then, with your thumb over the top of the receiver, use your index finger to push the bolt release.

Hmm.That is an interesting thought. I have not ever had the need to release the bolt and keep the gun against my shoulder. I am talking about the extra step of changing grip to operate bolt release compared to being able to keep grip on the 500 and 1200.

Considering what it does, and when you actually need to access it?

It's nice to have it out of the way during normal operations.
