Just starting is always wacky.
It's not just ammo and cases.
It's cleaning kits.
And optics.
And spotting scopes.
And range bags to carry everything in.
It's GI ammo cans to stow the ammo boxes in.
It's the wooden shelves to but the GI ammo cans on.
To make room for the safe to keep the goodies in.
The gleaming, pretty safe that you wind up covering in stickers & patches . . .
It's also the sets of hearing protection.
Shooting gloves, vests, hats, mats to go prone upon . . .
Clay throwers, target stands--just stacks of targets, too.
Oh, and oil-absorbent mats to clean upon, tool boxes for the cleaning jags, mops, rods, guides, etc.

Heaven help you when it gets to holsters--ad as potato chips, no such thing as just one.
Or, if you get the competition bug . . .
Or start buying AR parts (you have to watch them like Gremlins, you know)

Oh, and reloading is a completely separate addiction . . .

I did kind of chuckle when he mentioned the $600 in ammo. I thought, "I probably have that in just cleaning supplies..."

Now, I pan-handle for rimfire ammunition money on my days off!

Here is how to make it worse: Invest in BitCoin and Ethereum. Wait until the number goes up. If it goes down, wait until it goes back up. Withdraw the original investment and buy a gun. Wait for the number to go up again, remove some if it goes up 3x to 5x. Buy more guns.

And another thing, don't ever, ever, under any circumstance compare your "collection", "accumulation", "gathering", etc. to anyone else's. You will always have more than many, but others will have more than you. It's NOT a competition!

In my younger, dumb years I was hooked on drag racing, an alcohol funny car.
Between the car, spare motors, hauler and other expenses, It just about bankrupted me……So, this is like going from heroin to chocolate addiction!

Yes, I too fell into the ravages of drag racing as a young man.
A buddy and I raced brackets in B-Stock with a 1967 GTO that rarely went down the track without breaking something - usually in the final or semi-final race. I was the wrench bender and I was rarely sure if it was the driver or the car. Regardless, it was more than I could afford and I quit before I went too deep into debt. I gave him my half of the car and parts for my half of the debt owed on them. He got a great deal, even in those days, and I got a fresh start.

Guns are much more soothing and the blame for my poor competition performance is only mine. Loading room therapy is very helpful....

It can get sticky though. Can I buy a gun completing Form 4473 and gift it to my son who I know is not under any gun disability? If I plan to gift it am I buying a firearm on my son's behalf? Considering he is not even aware I am buying it for him? Clear as mud huh?

Reading the question on the transfer form it would appear yes, it can be considered a straw purchase but my FFL days ended years ago and hopefully someone who knows better than I will come along like a current FFL holder.

Man, I can relate to this. Here was my story:

I hunted with a 30-30 in the woods. Then I started hunting fields and I need rifles that serve better purpose for long range hunting in the fields. Then I need to buy proper optics for long range hunting. Then I wanted quick follow up shots when hunting in the woods. That turns into an AR15. Then, I need a 6.5 Grendel more suited to deer hunting. I need to buy two more AR's so I have one each for the family in case they pass some laws and they want to hunt in 10 years when they are old enough. Then I need rifles that serve better purpose for long range hunting in the fields. Then I need to buy proper optics for long range hunting. Then I need red dots for even faster shots in the woods. Then, prices being so cheap, I need a smaller carry pistol. Then the prices are so cheap, I need a 92X as a twin for my 92F so each daughter can have one when I kick. Then I bought some clearance rifles, because they were cheap. Then I decided that I didn't want the cheap rifles and really wanted a revolver, because I don't have a revolver.

You can say it's expensive, but I have no doubt I would be out very little money if I decided to sell them all. Not really expensive when you aren't really losing much value. This is more rationalizing if you didn't know it, but it works well for me.

Then there is reloading....because ammo is the real expense in this hobby. Got to make it cheap to save all that money. Which of course you don't save because you just get to shoot more. But you can, because it's cheaper. Then you start telling yourself it's cheap to shoot. This is more rationalization.

I learned to not take my wife because she is an enabler... It allows me to focus on shooting the ones I already have.

There is no known cure for FAD (Firearm Aquisition Disease).

If you build an AR type rifle you’ll want to change it up, do some ‘upgrades’. Eventually you’ll have almost enough parts to build a second. So you order those few parts…. And the cycle repeats itself.
