BRNO Mauser 98?

It sho is purty!

As you probably already figured out, its a Czech-made rifle built for the WW2 German Army, originally chambered for 7.92 (8mm) Mauser and later "sporterized" with an aftermarket stock, dual set-triggers, and mods to the bolt handle and safety to allow scope mounting.

Are you 100% sure its now chambered in .30-06? These conversations were done in vast numbers in the post-war years and adapted to all manner of cartridges. Should say somewhere on the barrel, but you might have to remove the action from the (very attractive) stock.

The scope looks to be an El-Paso Weaver K4. Great scope if the glass is still clear.

Overall, looks like a tasteful and well-executed sporter job. You'll probably want to have a qualified gunsmith check it out before firing, though. At the very least, headspace and chambering should be confirmed.

Thanks for the response. So this would have had a new barrel installed at some point to become an 06? Probably done in the USA with that being the caliber choice...

Most certainly. They did make factory Mausers chambered for .30-06, but only a tiny handful of commercial models between the wars and then much later post-war. That being a war-production gun, it would have been 7.92 originally, and those cant be practically reworked into .30-06 without sleeving and such. It was much cheaper and easier to just replace the whole barrel.

There is a mark on the barrel partly showing at the left edge of the last picture. Does it say anything useful?

If I were going to stay with the side mount, I would get some plug screws to clean up the top of the receiver.

I would be tempted to sit around inserting various cartridges and see what fit.
The Official Internet Gunsmithing Recommendation is for a chamber cast.

German eagle over a swastika and the #4 and I can’t make out what is on the far left, going off pictures myself.

Not sure thats a K98K but prolly built on a G33/40 Carbine Receiver. If so Should be marked as such under scope mount. These were special actions with lightening cuts on the receiver under the wood line. Simply removing action from stock may also confirm this. G33/40s were made for mountain troops and often prized for making lighter weight sporting rifles. In original shape they command big (now huge) bucks and are somewhat rare due to so many being sporterized.

Should also add if a G33/40 it barrel should have small ring threads. Original G33/40 bolts also had hollowed out bolt balls and marked DOT 41 or 42. The shape of the clip guide. markings and other features would really be a shock if is NOT a G33/40.
