Have to give credit where credit is due.

Not sure which Ruger engineer created the ability to change the front sight on a GP100 with such ease, but.....WOW! Does not get any simpler.

Push the release at the front of the barrel and lift sight from the rear.

Picked up a new HiViz.......cannot wait to go to the range.

It's a nice idea, and makes swapping sights easy, but I've found it does also a front sight to move laterally just a little. I've been able to push the front sights slightly left or right. Not a huge deal, unless you're reaching out quite a ways.

If the HiViz doesn't work out for you. Look at Dawson Precision. They'll make you one at the height you want to get POA and POI to match, which sometimes the rear sight cannot manage alone.

Always liked Ruger's GP100 front sight
changeability with the plunger and spring.
Never understood, though, why it wasn't
incorporated with the Match Champion
or the 3-inch barrels (maybe top rib too
small).

When I looked at the Colt Python's
changeability, I wondered why the
small set screw was used, a device
that can easily come loose or the
screw itself getting lost. It's soooooo
tiny. Ditto for the set screws for the
rear sight. And a near hair thin wrench
is needed to tighten the screws,
which Colt doesn't provide.

My 4" Ruger GP100 Match Champion in 10mm has the quick change sight up front.
I'd like to see a larger variety of sight blades for it.

The older .41 Redhawk that inhabits my safe has a plunger holding the front sight in. I removed a tiny brass bead sight that was almost impossible to see (unless it was high noon in the desert) and replaced it with a Hi Viz green sight. The V-notch rear and the green fiber optic front pair very well for my aging eyes.

Stay safe.

Jumping on the band wagon, I replaced mine with the HiViz green tube as well. Helps a lot, also don't have any lateral play as it seems to be pretty snug. As a side note, have a Dawson F/O front sight on my CZ75 that was a bear to install, but helped my old eyes too.

It is nice the way Ruger made it so easy to change out the sights, I've tried a couple of different sights and eventually went back to the original red ramp blade.

In the middle 80's I remember diligently shopping for my first handgun. We were spending a few weeks in Montana each spring hunting bear and I wanted a handgun to accompany me on those trips. Basically it came down to the Ruger Redhawk and the Smith 29. I vividly remember seeing this add:

All of the features really impressed me and I also loved the fact that you could change out the front sight with a punch. I read a lot of Bob Milek back then as well so I held out for a Redhawk with the factory scope rings. I was only sixteen at the time and waiting on my special order nearly killed me. I am pretty sure the guys at the store wanted to kill me too for asking about it everyday on the way home from school. Anyways I still have that gun, it still shoots great, and it made me a lifelong Ruger fan. The front sight idea was great back then and it still works great today. Enjoy your GP100!

ECVMatt, you mentioned Bob Milek.
He had to be among the very top
gun writers then and by any
comparison still would rank at
the top today.

His gun reviews and common sense
opinions were without puffery. I
don't think he ever became a shill
for gun makers or others in the
industry.

I am a fan of the gp100s changeable front sight.too. I changed mine to a all black target sight. I also changed the rear from white outline to plain black. I'm thinking of getting a fiber optic sight though.

Now i have to look and see if my GP 100 is like that. :D

I have to agree with CoalCrackerAl. Several years ago, I bought a slightly used GP-100 from a pawn shop but nobody there could tell me anything about the gun.
Thanks to this thread, I found out what that hole above my barrel is all about, something I didn't know before. Thanks !

I checked my 3” .44 Spl. GP and you’re spot on; no plunger hole to easily swap out the sight. :( It’s in a dovetail so it is able to be pushed out, though.

Stay safe.
