x-posted because maybe good lessons should be shared ...

My 11 year old grandson has been asking to go shooting with me, for over a year. Always asking how old he has to be to go. My reply has always been "It's not how old, it's how *mature*. You can go when you know the 4 rules of firearms safety." Well he's on and off tried, gets a couple right, muffs a couple. Mainly focused on video games.

Last week he surprised me and said "I've got them." He not only recited the 4, but explained what each meant. Deal is a deal. This past weekend we went. Curiously, my wife, not anti-gun just not a gun person decided she wanted to wipe the cob webs off her hardly shot Charter Arms .38. A family affair.

Long story short, grandson cut his teeth on a Ruger 10/22, single shot loaded. NO safety violations, graduated to 5 rounds at a time, and after taking instruction on safety location, clearing the rifle, sight picture and trigger control, had rounds in the center at 10 yards. Later the wife fired her revolver for familiarity and grand son got to experience one round of softball centerfire. Small steps.

So. One slowly experiencing young shooter, one reacquainted shooter, and the grandson is now my new range partner. All in all, my definition of a good range day. Thanks for reading

Good for you!!! Sadly not nearly enough young people get to learn to enjoy shooting these days, glad you are getting yours feet wet with this and hope he learns to love the sport. We need all the support we can get.

Well done sir! Great way to get the young ones started and for your wife to get acclimated once again to shooting her Charter Arms Undercover. Win/Win all the way around!

Range time with family is always a good Time! We had my daughter and her family plus my wife and about 6 other people for a fun day at the range! They all shot a some steel targets and we also sighted in some new rifles! It is always a good time when with family and friends.

Sounds like you could not have picked a better range partner. Congrats!

Love to see kids learn the shooting sports safely! This is why I was a 4-H Leader for 10 years, and currently coach SCTP High School Trap.

GJeffB, he will have memories of that day forever, keep making those memories with him.

I finally got my wife out shooting a long gun, and she chose my AR. Glad yours likes her snub Charter!

Sounds like a good day out for the family !

I'm anxiously waiting for my kids to be old enough (they're 3 & 1), I've got a while.

About 5 years ago I took my niece to the range for her 18th birthday, we discussed safety , rules and etiquette. She could repeat all the info I gave her, she absorbed or understood very little though and we didn't stay long and she made several mistakes. I knew it was time to cut it off when she was trying to take a provocative selfie in front of a rifle and then immediately after that asked me if we could shoot a picture of her ex-boyfriend that she convienietly had in her purse. It was a mess for a number of other reasons too, then on the way home she asked if I'd buy her some beer. That ones a lost cause at this point.

I'm hoping my oldest daughter will be ready for some bb gun action in a couple years , then we'll just take it from there.

I let my 10 year old shoot my 22/45 this summer. He really had a good time at the pit with me. I think next year gonna try to get out once a week just me and him and a couple boxes of .22 lr. Biggest challenge for me is he's a lefty.

Didn't get out as much as I had hoped over the last year. However, for his 11th birthday I took him to a local range and rented a Armalite AR50. I didn't tell him where we were going until we got there. Just to build suspense we walked around the sales floor for a bit browsing their fine wares. Finally I let him in on the plan. His eyes lit up as we headed down the stairs to the small indoor range. On the table was a Zastava 50 (it was not for rent) and I'm pretty sure the only thing that kept that boy from hitting the ceiling was gravity. "Wow! They have a black arrow like on call of duty!" After we filled out the range paperwork we were each given a round and into the range we went. The boy floating on air as we went through the double doors. The RO set the gigantic rifle up as my boy beamed with excitement. He has had a fascination with shooting a 50 bmg for a long time. He sat down and mounted the stock. I watched as he took aim. A minute went by and I could see his off hand trembling and foot bouncing. I asked him if he was alright and with a tear running down his cheek he told me he was fine just excited and nervous. I asked him if he wanted to wait and he said, "Dad I got this. I'm just nervous its a fifty." I took a step back and watched as he took a deep breath recounted the rifle with his right hand and within 10 seconds there was a thundering boom. Nano seconds after the shot broke he was off the rifle and squealing with delight. The RO handed him the brass for a souvenir. I took my shot so that he could feel what it's like to be a spectator when that round goes. As we left the range and headed to the car he told me that that was the best day ever and the best birthday so far. We made an agreement that if his grades were good all year we would save for a fifty of our own.

Thanks for sharing.
That’s exactly what I tell my son.
I introduced all the rules and gun handling safety from an early start with all nerf guns.
Got to take him to the range when he turned 10.

Nice to read about tomorrow’s shooters learning good habits at the hands of a conscientious instructor .

Hopefully this is the start of a long-term shooting partnership :).

Stay safe.
