I bought a brand new SA XD-M Elite OSP 3.8" 10mm in November. None locally, so bought through Gunbroker.

The pistol arrived and looked new, but appeared that the polymer frame has some minor cosmetic issues with inconsistencies in the texture. I've seen that before on other pistols, but not this dramatic and all over the pistol.

I figured it should be an easy warranty return and less hassle than returning it to the FFL across the country. So I kept it, shot it a couple of times, then contacted SA. I sent them photos. They agreed to replace it and provided a shipping label for just the frame.

I sent it in and they got it December 6th. A couple of weeks later, I called them to check on status and they said turn around time is normally 2 to 4 weeks, but since it's the Holidays, might take a little longer.

No worries. Well, 4 weeks came and went. Then 6 weeks. Finally, today at roughly 8 weeks and no pistol or follow-up from SA, I called them.

The Customer Service guy was very nice and professional. He looked up my S/N and said, "Hmm... That's odd. It says your pistol was ready to be returned December 17th, but was never shipped."

So he tried to get in touch with someone in the repair area to find out what happened. He couldn't, but said they'd follow up later that day.

I received an email within a couple of hours from the warranty guy saying they couldn't find anything wrong with the frame. I explained the cosmetic issues and he said to send photos of what areas I thought were bad. So I did. He replied back that he would have to check with the techs in the morning to see if it was a problem.

I know there is nothing functionally wrong with the pistol. It is a cosmetic issue.

Yes, I know it eventually would be worn and scratched and it wouldn't make a bit of difference, but it's like getting a new car with paint runs and being told that the paint still protects the metal and it will be dirty and scratched eventually anyway.

I told him that if they didn't think there was a problem and aren't going to replace the frame, then send it back and I'll live with it and eventually stop noticing the flaws in the polymer.

Very minor and only cosmetic, but drives me nuts on a brand new pistol. Taurus can get it right, but not SA?

I see the problem immediately. It's made of plastic :D.

Honestly, if I were the S&W guy working on it, I'd be scratching my head trying to figure out what was wrong with it. I have two polymer frame pistols, (both Ruger), used to also have a Glock, and your XD looks no different in the quality of the frame "finish".

This is why I own Rugers. Two weeks is.very long turn around with Ruger. Best CS I hav ever espeiienced over. The 30 years I have owned Colt, S&W, M&P, Remington,Beratta, Taurus, and for the past decade Ruger.

Flaws? I don't see them. At any rate, on the one issue I had with a Springer, (that was a mechanical issue) they turned it around in less than a week. Not bad in a pandemic.

From what I can see it looks like splay. That’s when there’s too much moisture in the plastic resin during the injection molding process and it results in surface defects as the water has to go somewhere

I don’t know what resins are used in manufacturing plastic pistols but it looks like a type of polysulfone that is by nature hydroscopic and requires drying before processing.

NB probably has the technical reasons down pat. On modern plastic guns, minor visual imperfections not effecting wear or fit surfaces are not going to ring any alarms with manufacturers. There's a reason for that surface texture.

Think of the sheetrock plastering and moldings in your house. Finish carpenters are experts at just putting in enough effort to fool your brain. You can always find flaws if you look close enough. My dad ended his career in carpentry doing interiors. I worked a few times with him, and that's the reason I'm an engineer now. I could never be good or fast enough to make a living (that was probably his intent).

I don’t see anything wrong with it. Could be just me, I use my guns hard, even when new, a few scratches don’t bother me the slightest

I agree that the imperfections are minor, and nearly all of my polymer pistols have them to one degree or the other. It's just that the XD-M had several of them.

Since contacting SA yesterday, they have been extremely responsive and helpful.

The only puzzling aspect is why after they deemed it fine and ready to ship back, they didn't. It just sat for 5 weeks until I called and asked about it.

Springfield has determined that the imperfections are within limits and a result of the mold process. I will get it back next week and will shoot it until I don't notice them anymore. Or have the frame cerakoted, which would mean I would be without the pistol for another month or so, LOL.

Since this will be a "forever" gun for the woods, I think I will give it one of my custom camo jobs, just to ensure I can never sell it.

Nothing puzzling about it. These aren’t normal times we are living in. Everyone is short staffed right now.
I agree. There is a Beretta customer service thread somewhere on the forum. While I can feel for the OP situation in that thread, there is a world-wide pandemic going on, and there are a lot of things I'd like better service with, but I understand sometimes there isn't anything you can do about it.

I've done some light car shopping over the past year, neither the local Honda or Subaru dealers have any, I mean zero, new cars on their lots. The used car lots are charging more than new car list prices for used vehicles. My daughter ordered a Honda in late December. She was told it may be available in March.

I'm sure things will improve, but it's going to be a while.

I would like to see that when you camo it. I have the larger version of the XDM in 10mm. I wish I had looked a little longer for the OSP with a threaded barrel. I'm thinking about sending it back to have the OSP cut and a threaded barrel fitted to it.

Heck, I'd be trying to figure out why, as an S&W employee, I was working on a Springfield.;)
Good catch, I guess my Alzheimers was flaring up.
Heck, a good S&W mechanic can fix anything, even a Springfield that doesn't need fixing.

I really don’t see the imperfections either. Mine is acceptable to me and it shoots good.

My experience with SA was when I sent back the Hex Red Dot as it shut off after a few rounds. Took them roughly 4 weeks but they sent me a new replacement which functions fine. I’m still working up SD reloads and have taken the red dot back off. Just not 100% sure I want it on this pistol.

Back in about 2015 the front sight flew off my 6 month old SA Mil-Spec 1911. I contacted SA, the emailed a label and the slide went out on a Wednesday. Much to my surprise the following Thursday, it was back in my hands, with the sight correctly staked in place. I was amazed to have it back in 8 days

Shoot it, carry it about, enjoy it. You’ll forget about any flaws. Big or small. once you get a bunch of rounds through it.

Stay safe.

Looking over the pictures again, I can see the surface in general has a fine mottled look to it, as if very fine dust or sand particles were all over it. There are also what could be discoloration streaks near the rear rail block but could be lube. Even if it doesn't affect function or durability a brand new pistol should look right. I mean every polymer pistol I have includes mold lines or marks, which comes with the territory. But the color or texture being outside the norm enough to be noticeable ought to be dealt with under warranty.

Especially after this:

"They agreed to replace it and provided a shipping label for just the frame"

I'd call them back and ask for someone with authority to make good on the above. At least someone at Springfield saw your pictures and thought it should be replaced.

I honestly never look that close at Polymer pistols
I do have a XDME 10mm SC … I never noticed anything wrong with the polymer finish…

I do want to say .. I had a Glock 36 and the frame had a different texture than any Glock I ever had .. but I liked it .. alot
My Ruger P97DC had a incredibly nice frame ..

But ..other than those two pistols , out of dozens, I never noticed polymer frames …
To me the XD series are incredibly well made pistols
every one I have owned operated as expected
The XDME 10mm SC is primary carry … a great shooting pistol… with the small grip swell and the magazine well removed its a perfect fit . Handles UW full power loads wonderfully
Couldn’t be happier
