All time favorite handgun

This is akin to asking for my favorite child or worse, favorite grandchild.

It's frequently (but not always) whichever one I'm fondling at the moment.

1961 Colt super 38. Never fired it.

All time favorite? So far, it’s got be this guy - just for the sheer fun of shooting it, and seeing the smile go across anyones face that shoots it

Man, this is a toughie.

The Mark IV with the Volquartsen innards is smooth, accurate and swappable between a 5.5” and 10” barrel set.

The S&W model 14 6” is awesome, as is the Model 15 4”.

The 1911 Kimber Stainless Target II and SA Ronin are great guns, by far my favorite centerfire autos.

The flattop.44 Spl Blackhawk is fun and a real looker…

When I’m alone by myself and I actually whisper the answer so as to not upset my other guns it’s always the same Archon Type B. It doesn’t use a Browning action and has a super flat recoil. It fits in my hand like it was made for me, it’s crazy accurate and perhaps most important you don’t see many of them around. It’s a great conversation starter.

1985 S&W Model 624 (44 Special) 6 1/2 bbl

This M1911 is probably my ultimate favorite.The frame is an Olympic that I assembled, the slide is a Caspian, and the optic mount is a Weigan.

But, I like virtually all M1911 guns. I have a number chambered in a variety of different cartridges. So choosing a favorite is difficult.

Also, I enjoy shooting my S&W Model 25-5 revolvers. They are in a close competition to "favorite" as the M1911's.

1911. The design has been around for 110+ years. Various aspects of the design have been copied and used a thousand times over. John Browning's innovations with the 1911, and earlier iterations, paved the way for the modern, autoloading handguns we use today.

I seem to change my cartridge preferences from time to time. However, there are very few hand gun rounds that I load for that I can not shoot in my first handgun. It still gets regular use almost every trip to the range. Straight walls from 32 ACP (from a 8" stub tube) to 357 max or 45 colt, plus all the bottle neck rounds.

When I was in my early 20s, I bought a used Colt Woodsman Sport. Looking at and using it, in the field, I thought it would be the same to people, that liked rimfire pistols, as a fine double shotgun, would be to people into shotguns. It was just a beautiful, well made little pistol. I cherished it, carried and shot it often. Later, just out of college, married, with a wife, and two young babies, just getting started in my field, I sold it. I sold the Colt, because I knew it would sell and sell fast. I missed it for many years. I thought about buying another one, but never did. A few years ago, I run across one that was new in the box, with the manual, papers and cleaning brush, for a fair price. I snapped it up. I had a leather presentation case made for it, dressed it up a bit. It now is in a glass display case, in it’s case, in my home office. I have shot it some, but it’s more of a show piece now. It’s one of the firearms, I own, I would have to get pretty hungry, to part with. It reminds me of the fun times, I had, just bumming around in the woods and fields, of younger days.

i haven't shot all that many guns, but my favorite so far is my SA Ronin in 9mm. it is just great fun to shoot, it's accurate, the recoil isn't much. it's only malfunction is that the slide doesn't want to lock back with 115 ammo. but i don't consider that a real problem.

it shoots good and looks good doing it.

My all time favorites.....by caliber are:
.45acp is my Wilson Combat Stainless Professional (I have 3 others)


10mm is my Smith & Wesson 1066 (I have 3 others)


9mm is my Browning Hi Power (I have 2 others)


.357 magnum Revolver is my 3" Factory DAO Ruger GP-100 (I have 1 other)


.41 magnum is my custom 4" Ruger Redhawk (I have two others)


.22 Rimfire Pistol is my Browning Buck Mark Target (I have 3 others)

The GP100, shown in my avatar image, is the easy answer. 4” full-lug barrel, adjustable sights, stainless steel. A very-early-Nineties model, the original-pattern factory grip was a perfect fit, in my hands, and has remained unequaled, since then. I bought it to be an all-‘round, sport-utility revolver, after I finally realized that I do not have N-Frame-length fingers, and, also realized that nothing, here in Texas, required that I carry a big-bore Magnum. After buying this GP100, I traded or sold-off all but one of my N-Frames. The excellent fit contributes to “natural” pointing, which simplifies firing aimed shots, and keeping everything aligned during the trigger stroke.

Moreover, this one rode with me, on police patrol, and during personal time. It was with me, one night, when I needed it, for one of those “gravest-extreme” incidents. One. Shot.

Another memorable time, this GP100 was with me, when I was posted outside the Israeli Consulate, in Houston, on September Twelfth, 2001, though not in my duty holster, but beside me, as a “bag gun,” because it could outreach my .45 ACP duty pistol, as well as my Remington 870 duty shotgun. (That was a memorable day, to be working, in law enforcement, as follow-up attacks were anticipated, at symbolic targets, anywhere and everywhere in the USA.) Having this GP100 with me, as a bag gun with me was not unusual, being already established as a normal, daily thing, during a time when I was not yet allowed to have a rifle with me, while on patrol. (Not long after 09-11-2001, a patrol rifle program was established.)

A time, or two, or, three, when someone became aware of the GP100 in the bag gun role, I would say “pocket carbine.” Each time, I got a nod of approval.

I like this GP100 so much, I have bought several more, in various configurations, with 3” to 6” barrels.

My favorite revolver is the S&W
627 Pro Series 357 mag 8 shot
My favorite Semi Auto is the Beretta 92fs 9mm
Both guns extremely accurate and extremely reliable. I have 11 other handguns but these two top the list

This old three-screw Super Blackhawk in my avatar picture. The trigger is incredibly good and it fits my hands perfectly.

Before the J Magnum madness.

It changes. For the longest while it was a simple Ruger Single Six. But recently it switched over to this. A 21-4. It's a joy to shoot.

Wow, this is tough.

For modern guns (at the moment) it would be a tie between a Single-Six in 32 magnum and a Blackhawk in 41 magnum. Both are hugely versatile and comfortable.

For black powder it has to be the Ruger Old Army with round ball, stainless with the longer barrel.

I have a pair of Colt 1911s from the 1970s that are my favorites.

A lightweight Commander and a Mark IV Govt. They're not carry pieces but I do take them to the range a few times each year.

I go between a Hi Point in 9mm and a Raven in 25 (I was just seeing if people were paying attention) I have 3 Freedom Arms revolvers with different barrel lengths in 41 magnum. No particular favorite, they're all good.

Toss up, either the Ruger 22/45, 6 7/8" slabside target pistol with the Simmons 4X pistol scope (stupidly I sold it), or my new Glock 43X.
