Does this look factory new to you?

The seller called me from Tennessee a little while ago. He said he received two 617’s from a wholesaler that he was told were new in the box. He did say he used prior sale pictures for the listing and never opened the box to check, I’ll say its on him.

He said he will pay shipping back and cancel the sale since the wasn’t what he thought it was. I think Im going to check the gun out in person tomorrow, if its not too bad I will ask him to knock a bunch of $$ off the sale price and call it even. If he says no, back it goes on his dime.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected, I’ll post again when I get a response.

Stay safe.

Open the cylinder and look at the area around the firing pin hole. When a gun is fired, the cartridge will slam against the breechface and over time that will polish a spot where the case head has been hitting. That is a good way to tell if a revolver has been shot and to get a rough idea of how much it has been shot.

I agree that someone other than the factory has messed with the screws.

Don’t be too gentle on him with negotiations make sure you get compensated for your time, patience and not only the current condition but what might have been done inside after those screws were removed. What most concerns me is the cylinder notch wear, it looks almost like damage to me! Sometimes a few hundred is not worth the headache (and heart ache). Remember, you bought a LNIB gun for a reason.

I'm not a gunsmith by any stretch of the imagination, but by the looks of that buggered screw, cylinder notch wear, loose rod, and poor refinish, neither was whoever worked on that 617. Can't imagine what might've been done on the inside and wouldn't be worth the potential issues to me. Sorry Riomouse, just my opinion.

That statement would make me return it for a refund. No way would a reputable seller not check his merchandise before offering it for sale. I would also make a note to never consider him for future sales.

Sounds like the seller if full of it and knew he was trying to pull a fast one. If you decide to send it back be sure to demand he refund any shipping you paid also. When it's all said and done how about letting us know the name of the seller so we can be sure and avoid his listings.

As a Public Service Announcement.

Just looking at the sideplate where it meets the frame in front, you can see that the side plate is higher. Consequently the shoddy polish that left criss-crossing scratches missed the lower spot - unless it is a shadow. That is very hard to tell from those photos. IMHO, a light tent will show details much better but the tiny scratches all over the gun, plus the worn spots from the cylinder stop would have precluded me from buying the gun at a "factory new" price.

If you take the side plate off, wear marks on the trigger, drop safety, and hammer will give the whole story.

It's those cylinder flutes that give it away. Smith and Wesson may do a piss-poor polishing before a firearm leaves their factory but they'll never use what looks like steel wool in the fluted area, and going two different directions no less. Bubba had a hand in prepping that revolver for the GB con job.

Contact seller … then GB
I had a fellow send me the wrong rifle once .. just a new person working in the shop .. or a sells ploy …
being.. I purchased them both with a substantial discount

Rest of the story.. sent a Marlin 336 in 30-30 instead of a Marlin M450 … he offered me the 336 at $275 and shipped the M450 with a check for $75
This was 10 years ago

Contact seller …

Per his reply above, he did...

I'd agree: both screw slots look burred, the lower more than the upper and the finish on the cylinder looks 'touched up'. The loose ejector rod confirms that someone has diddled with it. Rod

I got one like that once.

The seller claimed it was LNIB, but had been used as a display.

It looked about like the one Rio got. :(

Now I know why one of our LGSs zip ties all of their revolver hammers down.
Absolutely no dry fire of ANY gun in that shop. It sucks because you can't test the trigger, but you get to put your own turn line on it if you buy it.

I have a new 617. The satin finish does go in different directions. I have fired around 40 shells in mine and the turn line doesn’t look much different than that one. If the gun was for sale in a storefront the turn line could be from people handling it. The screw is suspicious. It shouldn’t leave the manufacturer that way but I wouldn’t say it could never happen. You can always call S&W with a serial number and get a manufacture date on it. Did the Seller have good feedback?

I spoke to the seller again today. I said if he would refund $250 to my CC off the final price it would be roughly the price of a used one and I would call it good. He said he couldn’t do that and he wants the gun back and will issue a full refund. I said that was fine, he needed to contact my FFL and send them a label for shipping back to him.

I contacted my FFL and let them know what to expect, then called Visa to open a dispute. I let Visa know that the seller and I had come to a verbal agreement to return the product and receive a refund. I will contact them and close the dispute as soon as the refund is posted.

The Visa lady was awesome. She knew right away it was a gun buy, after getting the info she told me her husband has a couple of similar experiences buying guns that weren’t as advertised and did the same thing I was doing.

I wish I didn’t have to use GB, I do like buying in person. New and used guns are not common right now in CA, It is tough buying just about anything and those that you do find are premium priced with zero haggling.

Oh well, easy come easy go.

Stay safe.
