I've got two model 80 type Berettas: one in .380 (M85) and one in .32 (M81). Both are in great shape and function flawlessly. (I've had them a bunch of years.)

Only perceived drawback is their size vs caliber. I have no problem carrying either for self defense, but the reality is I can carry a gun of the same size in 9mm, 40, or 45 (my 9mm S&W 3914LS or Chiefs Special, .40 SW99 compact or SW Chief Special in 45, not to mention all the plastic fantastic micro mini 9mm around).

Now they fit in well with my sorta Beretta "collection" wityh one each of 1934 & 1935s; a 1951 92, a92S, and a 92FX in Inox, plus a PX4c in 9.

So I thought I'd round out the accumulation with a .22. The model 87.

Until I looked at prices on the big auction site. $900 for a .22. Not likely, mate.

I'm still a little surprised by the $500ish price tags on the 85 and 81s, but close to a grand for the .22. Wow. I can do a model 96 Brigadier for that kind of money.

I'll assume they've become "collectors'" pieces or the world has just gone nuts. Guess that's gonna remain an empty spot in the safe where it could have gone.

A good quality 22 will usually cost at least as much, if not more than it's centerfire cousin. You see it all the time in the revolver world. It costs the same to make a Model 18 (22 LR) as it does to make a Model 15 (38 Special) for example. The only difference is the chambering. And there are usually a lot more of the centerfire version which acts to lower the price also.

You want a Cheap Beretta .22lr pistol? Get a Neos. As @CajunBass stated, a high quality, steel frame / steel slide .22lr pistol can easily cost as much or more than a centerfire pistol.

I looked at a Neos once, decided on a Ruger Mk IV and sent it off to Volquartsen to get "done," plus I have conversion kits for a Sig P220 .45 and a Sig 250, so I don't really "need" a .22. Just wanted to complete the Model 80 "set." And that don't look like it's happening unless I get lucky.
The other surprise when I looked was both the 32 and 380 were about half the price of the .22. Guess a lot fewer .22 were made/imported.

Yup, prices are crazy. For a minute I thought they were coming down a little. And on a few models I think they are.
The problem with 22s though is that AFAIK, nobody makes an all metal 22 auto outside of the Ruger MKs, Browning Buckmark, or S&W Victory. If you want something more unique you are going to pay through the nose. Heck, I know where there is a stock MKiv new in box with a tag on it for $640.00!

The prices being asked for the 87 isn’t a recent development. I can remember that 10 years ago new they were around $800. Same with the SW 41. They have always been in the upper $800’s that I can remember and now in the $1000 range .

3 years ago, I paid $720 ~ give or take New. I only bought it becuse it was Cool looking. Had a holster made for it, added a old school Ultra Dot. Was going to shoot Steel Challenge with it. But Life caught up.

I'm one of those collectors, but one on a budget. I've been trying to snag a Cougar in any caliber and they've been going for $800+ which is way too much IMO, so still waiting and watching. I've got all the other "Beretta cats" so I just need the Cougar to round that out, but I can wait if I have to.......

I have always thought the 80-series Beretta's were the p[erfect fit for my hand,,,
So when I found a Model 85 with extra mags at a pawn shop,,,
The deal of $399.00 (with a buy-back guarantee),,,
Was too good to pass up.

Then I read about the 87 and since I collect rimfire/centerfire pairs,,,
I started looking for one.

This was in 2011 and Beretta was still marketing new 87's,,,
I couldn't find a used one so I asked The Evil Pawn Shop Guy if he could order one for me.

When he did the math and quoted me a price of $666.66 I near fainted,,,
With Oklahoma sales tax that brought the total cost up to an even $725.00.

Now why in the world would any man pay that price for that pistol,,,
It's only a 7+1 capacity and is after all,,,
Just a .22 rimfire pistol.

The answer was,,,
I had the cash and wanted it.

It did sting a bit to hand over the old MasterCard,,,
But at the time I was very flush for cash,,,
And a bit of a spendthrift with it.

All in all though I've never regretted it,,,
The pistol performs flawlessly with bulk HV ammo,,,
And it fits my hand so well that I shoot it as well as my target style pistols.

Here are the pair,,,
I've since added a Model 81 (.32 ACP),,,
Just because the deal of $209.95 from Classic Firearms was too dang good to pass up.

When people tell me I was crazy to pay that much for a new .22 pistol,,,
I just agree with them and continue to happily burn ammo through it.

It's "just a .22" after all,,,
But I happen to love shooting it.

I really wish that Beretta would bring back the M70 / M71 but add an ambidextrous safety. It would be the perfect compact .22 autoloader.
ehhh....Beretta made way better .22s than that, eg the 76:

The 70 barrel is just too dang short to be a really good .22 pistol, IMO, though I suppose it depends on your use: the M70 would be better for concealed carry, though why anybody would want to use a .22 for that purpose is beyond me, sorry.

The M70 / M71 are excellent kit guns, and if for some reason one couldn't handle more than .22 recoil, are excellent choices for concealed carry.

The M76 is a fine piece for the range or perhaps holstered carry for hunting.

I paid ~$800 for my model 87 in 2015. Not only is it accurate and reliable, it is a beautiful work of art. Money well spent, in my book. It is one of the very few pistols that I can say I will absolutely own until I pass.
Now...if I could only get my model 86 back...
