Do You Really Need a.....???

Ill go back to my corner now.....

But on a more serious note I actually just had a similar discussion with a friend of mine who is looking for another rifle. My only real advice is to figgure out WHAT you want/like about something, preferably by trying before you buy..... otherwise youll never know if you did NEED that new thing or not.

Rubone

Love your J frame collection, especially what looks to be a blued Model 36 with a 3" barrel and the nickel plated Model 34 Kit Gun!

What good is money?
You can wipe with it, start a fire with it, or buy something with it.

The value of your dollar is plummeting.
Buy something that will increase in value over time. Real estate, gold, firearms.
Don’t forget bullets, beans, and mountain money (toilet paper)!

I get where you’re coming from, OP. I have types of guns I collect (old military rifles, .32s) and types of guns I have for the range, self defense, etc. Once I had one full sized 9mm I lost the urge to buy others….. for now. I’d still like to try others, just not going to spend hundreds to do so. Yet.

I'll chime in again with another bit of (what I hope is) clear thinking.
IF (please note the 'if') one's desire is to have firearms protection about the house, a rather few arms would suffice. (This is a specific example.) A number might suggest a shotgun, another would suggest a type of handgun. Perhaps a second of such in reserve. I suggest a short, handy and limited range rifle or carbine.
But a more or less minimal number are needed. This is not directed at the collector or enthusiast. This is directed at the individual who seeks defense against the predators of civilization. One defending one's home and family has no need for a 600 yard target rifle or something suited to large dangerous game (an 'elephant rifle' in common parlance).

I also suggest that one such minimalist owner might find interest increasing in other fields of firearms. Make that 'warn', not suggest.

I don't get these "how many" or "need" questions. We are all adults and most of us enjoy having the freedom to think and act for ourselves. If you live where you can't do that it is time to move IMO. As long I can afford to buy what I want, guns or otherwise, without putting me and mine in finiancial trouble I will do so and need no one's input on a limit---for anything---- guns to toilet paper, and everything in between.

I got a little voice in my head that makes me justify evert firearm purchase, it allows me a couple of fun guns and a couple of using handguns.

OP I was also raised by Depression era parents and I take it as a blessing more than curse.

Don’t feel like I’m missing anything except rabid consumption and in the end I tell myself I only really need “one” handgun for protection:)

I have a close friend who has bought many pistols that he describes as "a good carry piece". He always carries 2 or 3 pistols....one on his person another in his glove box and a 3rd...well no one knows. They are always loaded, usually snubbies, and usually .38s. We attend gun shows together and he often leaves the show with yet another "carry piece". I know of one occasion when he did draw gun in self-defense. Never had to discharge the gun, but did scare off a potential car jacker. Pretty good record since he's been carrying for about 70 years, even before it was popular.

If ya got this far, thanks for sticking with it; hope you don’t feel it was a waste time.

Truth to tell, when I saw how much you wrote, I just scrolled to the end. Even though you didn't find a suitable bargain on GB, it was still fun, wasn't it?

A person needs one gun. All the others are wants satisfied base upon individual thinking. I used to have four pistols for different conditions. I have a pistol for SD only. But then I decided to buy another in case my “one gun” was rendered inoperable. Yes, my guns are similar. I have a Ruger Security 9 Compact and it’s larger brother, which is my nightstand gun, but could serve as a carry gun. My LC9S, and LCPII are gone, as is my Walther PPS M2. But if I wanted more guns, I would buy them. Of course at 79 I am on a fixed income so ………………..

Now days “need” has little to nothing to do with my gun purchases. Their have been those times, but I basically have what I could classify as a need.

An upland bird hunter or elk hunter who, like the rest of us, wants a personal protection carry may argue that.
I've said for years that a minimalist needs 3 guns. A person who has a 12 ga shotgun, a .30-06 rifle, and a .357 Magnum revolver is prepared for anything in North America. (with the possible exception of grizzly or brown bear)
