Whats the logic here?

I don't know how you handle it. I wouldn't last 5 minutes before telling someone off.
I've never been in a gun store where I didn't witness both employees & customers getting swept.
Maybe it was just pulled out of the case. Doesn't matter.
Maybe it was just handed to you by an employee. Doesn't matter.
If I ran a gun store, I'd have HUGE signs posted inside & out listing the rules of firearm safety, with a line at the bottom stating "absolutely no exceptions". The first time you muzzled someone, out the door you go.
You'd be out of business in a month.

In my son's shop, they kept any ammo found in 'empty' guns on a shelf with a big "dont be this guy" sign. That collection expanded regularly. Personally I was handed a used SKS off the shelf at a small store, pulled back the bolt and not only had a round eject but saw 3 more in the mag. No idea how long that gun was on the wall like that.

Whats the logic here?

I went into a gun store yesterday, big letters "NO Loaded Firearms". Huh? This is in a 2a friendly open and concealed carry state. This is just like all the nonsense laws we have already. Anyone up to no good is not going to care if there is a sign saying NO Loaded Firearms. Just like the laws we have. If something is illegal, criminals aren't going to care it illegal, after all they are CRIMINALS!.
What's the logic of morons bringing in loaded guns to sell, trade or have work done to?

I prefer the signs like “please leave your handgun in your holster. If you feel the need to remove it, please be accurate”.

I brought a Glock to an LGS to have some work done once. It was cased and there was a chamber flag that was actually longer than the barrel and stuck out the muzzle. Making it clearly obvious that there couldn't be anything in the chamber.

I set the case on the counter, opened it, put my finger in magazine well and said to the counter guy "You see there's no magazine." Then pointed to both ends of the chamber flag and said "You see there's a chamber flag, the pistol is clear."

The guy looked at me like I'd just handed him a loaded gun?????

I don't think I ever went back.

Night Rider: That gun shop staffer was so startled seeing an unfamiliar gun - with your Hand near it - that he could not Hear or Listen/understand what you were telling him about the -- inserted chamber flag.--

When people make a fearful assumption, no matter What is in front of them, their brains seize up for a bit - no matter what we try to tell them.

I've seen it in many other types of situations, as you have.

well, I'm not going to bother reading everyone's reply, and it certainly has been said already but, if you have to ask, you probably need a mentor.
I have seen that posting at 100% of gun shops around here for the exact reason you would expect. Some Fu-K-Up shows up with his gun, whips it out, points it around, proclaims its unloaded, and proceeds to clear the very loaded chamber. In the 5 minutes this guy is talking up the counter with no intention of selling his gun he came in to "get an idea of the market", 2-3 real customers have already left, never to return, because no one want to go to "that kinds of place". They tell their friends, and then they're out dozens of customers. Yes, really. If there is a sign, its because someone made it necessary. If you can't understand the sign, there is a good chance your the reason there is one. No offense intended.

My favorite gun shop is explicit that holstered pistols carried legally are fine, but guns brought in for other reasons need to be unloaded, cased, etc. Sensible IMO.
That's what I'm used to seeing. Owners may not have thought it through.

I don't disagree with you but I'm not sure it applies here. Just purely by coincidence the owner of the gun shop was a former 13 Bravo as I was and we spent 5 minutes talking artillery before I opened up that case. Prior to opening up the case I told him why I was there and what was in the case. I have a hard time believing that he was that shocked but I suppose anything is possible

I don’t think it’s criminals they want protection from, it’s the idiots.

Like this one for example.

A man shot himself and injured a woman after his firearm accidentally discharged at a shooting range,…

Notice that table they are standing at when he shoots himself and the woman?

This is what it looks like if you are standing there. Minus my two red arrows.

Now, when the idiot sues the store. They can at least say they tried to save him from himself but as soon as you idiot proof something, they just make better idiots.

Patronizingly assuming that ALL of your customers are morons is not conducive to a positive business environment.

The best action plan for gun stores and gun shows is the "Holstered/concealed guns remain holstered/concealed- DO NOT REMOVE or FONDLE!. All others are unloaded, cleared, with actions either open or zip-tied." This is what is used at Sportsman's/ Cabela's and seems to work well.

One of the local shops around me has an indoor range too and they have the same signs up.

For the OP, theses types of sights and rules are for the safety of the employees and also for the safety of other customers.

Ccw's have to stay holstered.

Long guns stay in the case. So if your returning something, box it up first, and hand them the box. Let them open it a clear it.

Who the heck walks into a gun store holding a gun, or whips one out? If you want to be drawn upon by 3 armed counter workers, and screamed at for a half hour.....by all means, entertain us.

A friend of mine used to run a small pawn/gun shop locally, he's since retired. He was a one man show and often in the shop alone. A customer he had never seen before came into the shop and asked to see a 9mm pistol. Kevin, as always opened the chamber and handed the gun to the customer that way. He was slightly distracted to answer a phone and shortly after another regular customer came in the shop.

The customer handed him the gun back with the chamber closed and Kevin placed it back under the glass. Later that day another customer asked to see the same gun. When Kevin pulled the slide back a single round fell out. Who knows why, but the customer earlier in the day had loaded the gun.

Kevin believed that the guy planned to rob him as soon as got off the phone and panicked when another customer came in.

And I've found rounds in either the mag or chamber twice when I picked up guns at a gun show. Never in a regular gun shop.

I don't know. All dope shooter has to plead is he didn,t see the NO and was following "Loading and Unloading Firearms Here". Anti gun jury will say YES! Too many instructions. GUNS ARE BAD!!! CLOSE BAD GUN RANGE!. The woke jury has spoken. Don't laugh. I could see that happen these days of criminals always not guilty.

Ask them exactly what their policy means and why they have it. Their answers will tell you more about the store than the sign. Let us know..

Well one option would be to just buy the business and change the sign more to your liking. Another option is open your own shop across the street and make a sign saying loaded firearms welcome. A third option is simply do not frequent the shop since they apparently are not in agreement with your thinking. Their shop and their rules, that simple.

Ron

4th option is tell others it stinks, nothing wrong with that either. Or even tell them their rules stink aka offer customer feedback. The OP wasnt saying he wants them shut down.

Local pawn shop had a huge clear cylinder that they put bullets from folks guns that brought in loaded guns to sell. Had a 50 bmg in the thing. So some turd brought a loaded 50 into the store. Another pawn shop I frequent has a nice hole in a display case right below the glass. Both store have a sign that says no loaded firearms.

My store has a similar sign. I asked them about it and if meant they were becoming like a different, shady gun store 20 minutes away. They just laughed and said holstered firearms, concealed or open, are are fine. A lot of no loaded firearm signs at gun shops and ranges are short and simple, for simple people.

They probably have more chances of getting shot by the average joe pointing a loaded firearm at them than they do getting robbed at gun point.

I would have to guess that it is a safety message. Its there because these things need to be dumbed down to those with the least proficiency, or sense if you like- instead of holding those people to the higher standard expected of a responsible gun owner with any sense. I worked in a gun shop for a while after I retired from the army, and I could bore you with more than a few tales of serious safety violations by customers bringing something inside that they claimed was unloaded, or in some cases didn't even know if it was or how to check it. I've seen similar signs at gun shows for as long as I can remember.
