1911 No -Drill Scope Mount

Very cool. I would guess this mount really does need to be paired with a gun with extremely tight slide to frame fit for repeatable accuracy. I know my good old rattletrap Colt would be just about useless with any sighting system attached to the frame.

Even the old GI battle rattle 1911s can be pretty accurate as long as the barrel to slide fit and the bushing fit are good. I agree that they probably won't have repeatable accuracy with a frame mounted optic since the slide to frame fit is loose.

You see a few frame mount red dots on the bullseye lines. Agreed tho, they are probably all pretty tight 1911's.

The nice thing about them is that you don't need to monkey around with lighter recoil springs like you do on a slide mount.

You might be surprised, When my eyesight first started to make it hard to use iron sights effectively, I found something similar that replaced one of the grip panels. I put it on my Norinco 45 "rattle-trap Colt" clone and didn't expect much for the reasons you mentioned, but figured it'd be "good enough" at 10 yards to see how I liked red dots or a low power handgun scope. Actually worked better than I ever expected, easily keeping them on an 8" paper plate at 50 yards.

First off, that is excellent work. I bought one of the ready made versions quite sometime ago. It quickly made it to my "don't use anymore" box of stuff and now use a dovetail dot mount. I have found that scopes on handguns and I are not compatible.

Slide mounts dominate NRA Bullseye Pistol, however we shoot spitballs and light bullets. Les Baer warned me not to shoot over 200 grain bullets in my Wadcutter.

I think the primary reasons the slide mounts are the most popular is that it is easy to rack the slide, either by grabbing the slide or the sight. And the mount is not in your way when removing the slide for cleaning. Accuracy is unaffected because these competition pistols have no movement, either up and down, between slide and frame. They are so tight that air is rubbed raw when the slide cycles. LOL

That grip mount one you made is a lot better than the one I found initially, but I quickly decided that a rear sight replacing mount was a better option after I became a believer in red dot sights. I believe I still have that old grip mount stored away somewhere, although I haven't seen it many years, and can't imagine ever wanting to use it again.

Just did a quick "back of the napkin" calculation... If the rail is off by say .01" front to back then that translates up to maybe 7"-8" groups at 100 yards... Not counting me or ammo differences... Not to bad really... My technique would probably double that though...lol...
if you had a really good lock up then the frame mounted scope might work out... I'm probably missing something very important though...lol... Now I have something else to mess with my analytical mind... And another wallet emptying foray... Nice diy mount.

Thank you . I just wanna make stuff . Preferably out of metal .

I understand the want. I made my living for years making things out of metal and repairing broken and bent things made from metal. Lots of high pressure piping, some low pressure stuff, and small to large eqiupment. I even made a double offset square swamp cooler tube with different sized openings from welded up 14 guage steel. I still make a lot of things from metal but vary that with wood and leather.
