I'm linking below a news story about some dudes that hit a target at 4.4 miles -- on their 69th shot. That just seems like a random event. If it were repeatable - i.e. 25% of the time -- then that would be something. This? not so much....

Saw a video a while back about that that had some more info. I'll have to see if I can find it. They certainly seemed to have put plenty of effort into it. I'd like to know how close the other shots were. That'd maybe give a better idea how much random chance had to do with it.

Well, you could always setup a bigger target at 4.5 miles and get a 1000 rounds and be the world record holder. Until someone drives another tenth of a mile to drop off the target…

If a person took a relatively "normal" good quality bolt action with good glass on it and tried to do this, I wonder what the average group size would be? 69 shots sounds like a lot, but is it really? I don't know. Be educational for someone to do a comparison.

It wouldn’t be a group. It DOES take a certain threshold of skill and a cartridge of sufficient power to put rounds out this far with any semblance of control.

Nobody needs to be encouraging Uncle Joe and Cousin Willy to start flinging rounds from their 7 Rem mags out towards 7800 yards to chase this record.

69 rounds is a lot. Yes, this “record” is wholly reliant upon statistical certainty. It does require sufficient investment in skill, gear, and time, but by design, none of these attempts can be failed.
