Do 9mm barrels need to be timed?

So lets just say I'm dumb and broke my index pin on my barrel, however from my understanding there is no feed ramp or locking lugs that need to be timed on a 9mm barrel. Its a feed cone or something like that. It function checks all right.

Can you give us some specifics; make, model?
If the designers included a locator pin, there's a pretty fair chance that it needs to be there.

If you’re talking about AR15, the main concern would be alignment of gas system, locking lugs and feed ramps. The first two wouldn’t really be applicable for 9mm since they are blowback with no gas or locking lugs on the barrel extension. I would suspect if you can achieve feed ramp alignment, with the barrel properly torqued you would be ok. One thing to consider though is that you’d be replying solely on friction to maintain continued alignment. I don’t know if feed ramps are an issue on your particular barrel/receiver. You can also extract and replace the alignment pin.

Its, an Aero Precision 8.5" barrel. I will reach out to them as well. It doesn't have specific feed ramps as far as I can tell, its like they are continuous around the entire thing

In addition to aligning the gas system, the index pin also separates the barrel’s torque while firing from the fastening system.

It’s in there for multiple reasons.

You can get by without one, but Aero is a good company and will take care of it.

Now, the only real reason I’m here is to get the story on how you broke the pin off.:)

Nothing crazy, I wasn't paying attention and switched torque mode off on my wrench so I just tightened to much. I'm sitting there going man 45 ft/lbs wasn't this hard last time lol.

I'm really impressed witht his EPC receiver set. The fit is fantastic. There is zero slop in this thing and every piece has been that way.

Jeez! Remind me not to shake your hand!:)
I’m not sure what kind of torque number it takes, beside some huge amount, to damage an index pin that way. Be certain the receiver isn’t damaged too.

The fun part of building!:D

I will be surprised if there is NOT any damage to the receiver simply due to aluminum being softer than the steal pin. Plus the fact that it would take a whole lot of torque to brea the pin which very well could have stretched the receiver threads.

short answer in a traditional blowback 9mm the barrel Extension timing pin is not needed at all it serves no purpose.

Some barrel manufacturers don't even install a pin on the 9mm barrel has no gas system, no feed ramp is slightly beveled. simply it is honestly cosmetic and done by most out of habit / or customers desires.

If the threaded receiver and barrel shroud face of the barrel are concentric as well as the barrel nut the torque is placed evenly on the receiver threads even without a pin.

None that I could see, I definitely damaged some of the cerekote but the threads looked fine same as the the indexing notch on the receiver. I was able to thread the nut back on and torque it properly without any issues. The handguard went on fine and it function checks.

I'm waiting for aero to write back. If they ask me to send pictures I'll disassemble and share them here.

I got a little impatient and I decided to test it. It functions fine, and accuracy seems good for a run of the mill 8.5" barrel and 147gr ammo. I was able to consistently hit 18" plates a 100 yards. I'm still waiting for Aero's response before I take it out again though.

LMAO anything from 8" to 11" barrel would cause me to form 1 for a integral suppressor.
OK back to the thread @bwalker36 Honestly based on you observations and without looking at the setup I like someguy stated I think you are fine and have no worries.
