I know this has kinda been hashed out before but I’m going to do it again. I’m going to try an A22 mag I think. I like to coon call and they sometimes come in multiples. Current rifle is Model 93 and when several coons are running around or a single is going high speed I can’t work the bolt and stay on target so I’m gonna go semi auto. And no, can’t use a 223. I’m interested to see what luck others have had with ammo and accuracy, jams etc.. The 93 will routinely punch nearly one hole at 50 and only opens to around and inch or inch and a quarter at 100. It is a one bullet gun, Hornady 30 grain. Not expecting that from a semi auto but it would be nice to hover around there.

A friend of mine has one. His isn't what I'd call one-hole accurate but it'd be plenty accurate enough for knocking a coon out of a tree. His likes Maxi Mags, yours may not.

Ok, no one had these in stock locally so I bought one off line and picked it up about a week ago. Rained all week so didn’t have a chance to shoot it until yesterday. Cleaned it and took it out for a couple boxes of shells. Like most other Savages I own, the magazine will not seat properly unless the bolt is open. I expected this. Not a good thing but not a deal breaker either. The front scope base may be a little off center but I didn’t actually pay attention until the scope was mounted and found it shooting about 2’ left at 50 yards. Anyways, moved the target to 25 and got it on paper then back to 50. Through this whole thing I kept getting light strikes AND it would go full auto for two or three shots from time to time. At first I thought it was me. I cranked the trigger pull up after the first time and carefully started over. Still would let off two or three shots full auto. Quit shooting. A couple of centuries ago I had an old Springfield tube fed that would empty a tube from time to time but haven’t seen it since. The ammo was CCI 40 gr hollow point just for reference. Anyone else ever bump into this with this rifle.

Wow, thanks for the head’s up. I’ve been eyeing one of those at my LGS for a while. I’ve been leaning towards the Magnum Research 10/22 clone in .22mag but the price of the Savage is attractive. That, and all the Savages I’ve fired have been very accurate. It sure sounds like you got a bad apple given the rail misalignment and more seriously, the full-auto problem. I’d call Savage and get an RMA and shipping label and get it back to them for a fix. Sorry this is happening to your brand-new rifle - that always sucks.

If you are having issues finding one, have you thought about a 9mm semi auto.

I have suggested that and 38/357 to several "non gun" people as being a great round to deal with pests up to coyote size without having that centerfire rifle range issue.

I have the A17HMR. Never given me any problem. I bedded the action and while not quite as accurate as my Marlin .17HMR bolt gun it does okay. With the A17 ammo it is mostly MOA. I need a better scope. Mine is the target barrel thumb hole stock.

This is the best money I've spent on eradicating coons.

Put a little corn in the bottom of each one.

You'll have all the time you need to make your shot, in the morning.

Put them far enough apart you can't catch the same one in two traps as they don't seem very bright after the first one gets them.

That right there is call a trap line jm. Ain’t interested cause id have to go check it every day. I like to walk and scan or call. When you get a few good boar ‘coons jumpin‘ around nearly in your lap it’s kinda fun. The main reason I chose the Savage is the flush mag. Even tho Savage’s version is not equal to Ruger’s it doesn’t catch on brush, clothing, etc.. I emailed the company today. We’ see how it goes.
