No bad guys? Why carry?

Funny that a dinky handgun fired underwater "can really damage internal organs," yet firing a 12 gauge bangstick underwater results in "a muffled thump, and no concussion" when fired against a cave wall, inside of a cave, according to professional divers.

Gee, I guess that means a 3" barreled 12 gauge on a 26" stick produces less concussion in an enclosed area than a 9mm handgun in an open area? :scrutiny:

I have a slightly unreasonable fear of being trapped in a car underwater. No real reason for it, it's just something that's bothered me since I started driving. As a result, I've looked into the best way to escape from a vehicle underwater. The Dutch, with all those canals, have actually done some research on this and there is other literature available if you look.

Basically, if your car goes in the water, roll down the window. This lets water in which allows the pressure to equalize between the interior of the car and the outside. When the pressure is equalized, open the door and escape. There should still be enough air for you to take a couple breaths before you swim out. Btw, most power windows will still work for some time after the car goes in the drink.

Breaking a window is really a last resort. The force of the water coming in can disorient you or possibly cause injury by causing bits of glass or metal to hit you.

I've seen one TV report where a reporter was put in a car that was then submerged to show how to escape. A Sheriff's SCUBA team was standing by and he also had an air tank. Everyone was surprised when the front windshield buckled under the pressure of the water and collapsed onto him. The impact broke his wrist. I believe he got out on his own though by opening the door. He did need help getting to the surface because he was disoriented.

That would be correct, 12 ga is a low pressure round. It has nothing to do with sound or concussion it's the pressure that gets ya.

There was a post on here someplace that told about what rounds are good to fire in enclosed spaces such as from vehicle interiors. very good reading if you can find it.

Bangsticks are also made in high-pressure rounds, though. None of them appear to have caused internal damage or hearing loss to divers that have used them.

http://www.bangsticks.com sells 'em in .22 magnum, .357 magnum, .44 magnum, .410 shotgun, 12 gauge, and .223 Remington.

I find it very hard to believe that a handgun is unsafe to fire at arm's length, if .223 is safe to fire at arm's length + 26". Sure, the pressure would be enormous in front of the barrel, but you aren't going to be shooting at yourself underwater to break a window anyway.

IF it comes down to life and death, I am going to bash that gun against the window…… I might shoot underwater who knows. I understand roll window down but most cars have electric windows, I would assume some electrical problems in any water containing ions. The point is I know where that dense piece of steel is, on my belt, not in the back corner of the glove box, or tossed across the car like a hammer or other unit might be. Maybe I wont be able to get to it if hurt, but I will have my seat belt on and the government knows what is best for me so I should be okay.

And as far as screaming and bleeding if stuck in a machine, this is THR strat and tact forum, I expected somebody to say they would be in shock and the pain would not hurt them, they would separate their shoulder (if arm stuck) allowing greater mobility, tap 2 rounds into motor housing, pull out 1 of 3 knives on person cut though steel to remove arm with super knife…… sew limb back on with cat gut, give self tetanus shot.

Call for help is a good suggestion that slipped my mind.
