How can I safely remove the side plate from a new Taurus revolver, model 82? I tried tapping it out from the opposite side of the frame but the side plate wouldn't budge.

Thanks

O. L.

I remove side plates by removing all the screws then tap on the butt of the frame with the wooden handle of a hammer. The vibration and jarring will slowly lift the side plate without damaging it.

Stans has it. The trick is that you strike the grip frame on the same side as the sideplate so that the inertia of the plate lifts it from the frame or, if you wish, allows the frame to drop out from under the sideplate. Jerry Kuhnhausen, in his book on S&W revolvers, suggests holding a thumb over the sideplate while striking the frame so the sideplate does not drop to the bench or floor and ding its edge. Prolly good advice for the Taurus, too.

May I ask a dumb question? Whyinhell do you want to remove the sideplate of a new revolver? No matter how well you do it, it will never look the same again. You don't need to remove the sideplate to clean or lubricate a revolver.

I wonder if folks drive a new car home and then remove the hood, door, or engine head just to see if it can be done?

Well Jim, I did it to my Taurus 455 Ti from CDNN because I couldn't wash all the sand out with just Powder Blast. It did bad things to the trigger feel and caused occasional reset issues. I didn't know the cause until I got the grips off. It SHOULDN'T be nessisary. But in my case it was.

Sure we have, but it voids the warrantly on a new gun. As to cleaning, I agree a gun full of sand does need sideplate removal, but that shouldn't be the case with a new gun.
