Bulgarian, because I've never heard of the Hungarian one :p

I own a Bulgarian Makarov, and I have never had any problems or jams with it. Perhaps someone here can provide more information on the Hungarian one.

Hungarian Maks are not true Maks. They are only called "Maks" because they are chambered for the 9mm Mak round. They are not Makarov pistols. AFAIK the only true Maks were made in Russia, Bulgaria, China, and East Germany.

Aren't there Polish ones?

The "Polish Makarov" is like the Hungarian - not a Makarov pattern gun, just one that chambers the 9x18 Makarov round. CZ also makes 9x18 pistols (I think I am getting one from makarov.com) in the Czech Republic, and there may be other guns made in other countries that chamber the round.

Think of it this way: It's like shooting .40 Smith & Wesson out of a Glock. Just because the ammo says Smith & Wesson doesn't make the weapon a Smith & Wesson.

Here are the 5 countries that produced a Makarov:

* Russia - military and commercial
* East Germany - The Ernst Thaelman Factory
* China - Norinco, military arsenals 59 & 66
* Bulgaria - The Arsenal Factory and Miltex
* Germany (post-unification) - The Simson Suhl

Again, there are other pistols CHAMBERED for the cartridge 9mm Makarov, but doesn't mean that they are Makarovs. Quality varies greatly with the other pistols, so do your research!

HTH,
Mike

I'd buy the Bulgarian Makarov over the 9x18mm chambered Hungarian Walther clones. They're much better built. No alloy frame, either - all steel.

If you can get your hands on an SMC 918 I'd go for it... that's truly a pocket rocket. Ive had my eye out for an SMC-380 for a while.
