Got a couple questions about two totally different rifles here...

A guy whose land I hunt on recently had me take a look at his Remington 12A (pump action .22 LR) because it hasn't been working right. I took the thing apart and found that the firing pin had snapped in half (it had apparently been welded in the same spot previously), which looks to have been causing the rim of the cartridge to get stuck under the front edge of the firing pin, keeping the cartridge from loading into the chamber correctly, prior to the firing pin actually breaking in two. So I ordered the replacement part as well as all the other parts that have to do with the firing pin (spring, guide, retainer pin, etc...). Now I have some other questions about this rifle as it's the first time I've worked on a 12A before...

There's a fair amount of slop between the "lower" (stock/trigger group) and "upper" (receiver/barrel group). These groups appear to be held together by a single captive screw in the upper that passes through a coaxial hammer pivot pin in the lower. Does anyone know of a relatively simple way tighten up the fit? Also, what do the two small screws on the top of the "lower" (just ahead of the stock) do? For the life of me I can't figure it out. I'm hoping the rifle isn't missing any more parts, but it's darn near a hundred years old and has seen better days.

And on the G3 clones, particularly the PTR-91...

I've been waiting for over a year now (between financial setbacks and them being unavailable) to get my hands on a PTR-91. It's looking like I'll finally be able to get in the next couple of months. The question I have is about the selector switch. I was looking at a picture of a PTR-91 broken down and it looks like the selector switch might be reversible. Anyone know if that's true? I'm guessing not, but if it is, it would save me a little grief on account of my left-handedness.

Nope—Not Reversible:

The G3’s selector will only go in one way from the left side. There are very expensive plastic ambi trigger groups/housings that can be purchased, however. The brass will eject rather violently out of the side at about a one to four o’clock angle and go ten to twenty feet or more. Not something I would want right in front of my face. The left side charging handle might be an issue too. PTR’s are great rifles—just not very friendly for southpaws.

On Second Thought

You can get a port-buffer attachment to solve the ejecting brass problem and may be able to fabricate a right side selector by taking an AR-15 selector cutting it flush and attaching it to the PTR’s right side selector indicator with two small screws. That would probably work quite well actually.

Dang. Well, I kind of figured. Looking at the pics again, I noticed that the left side of the trigger group (both metal and plastic) has a set of notches that the switch appears to interface with whereas the right side does not, so that pretty much takes care of that. I know I've seen that before. Wish I'd remembered it before asking.

That's not a bad idea. Might not be pretty, but it would probably work. There is a company selling the ambi selector for the MSG-90, which I think will work with the plastic semi-auto trigger housing at least (I plan on ordering it with the rifle anyway). They cost a friggin' mint, though. Like pretty much everything HK.

Not too worried about it. Haven't had a problem with any of the other G3-type rifles I've gotten my hands on. They all tend to throw brass between 2-3 o'clock. Just wouldn't want to be the guy standing next to me. Might put an eye out!

Yeah. None of the 7.62x51mm auto rifles really are. Been kicking around the idea of getting an FAL instead. It's some kind of masochistic torture, I think.
