I placed an order with them for some high capacity mags, to be shipped to a friend in Washington. In their catalog it clearly states that these magazines cannot be shipped to California, which is where I live. SG has a "gift feature" when you order from them, so you can ship a present to a friend. I've used it before to send things to friends for Christmas, etc. The person I wanted them to shipped to lives in Washington where they are perfectly legal.

This is the second time something stupid like this has happened. I wanted to order a peep sight for my Enfield. Nothing illegal about having it shipped to California according to their catalog. They denied it because it was a "restricted item". I understand about liability, etc. but if they are not going to let me purchase the magazines the stupid catalog should say that California residents will not be allowed to purchase them.

So after this long boring story, does anyone know if Midway or Brownells will let me buy high cap mags and ship to Washington. If I have to send the money to his wife there is a good chance he is going to end up FAL mags or BAR mags as he will with some Glock mags. My last option is to wait till I go to visit him in a few months and buy them myself but generally I like to give birthday presents BEFORE the birthday.

Ok, off my soap box now.:D

There are places which allow you to use anonomous payment such as Paypal, try this method.

It may also be easier to have your friend order the 'goods' so all legal "t's" are crossed and "i"s dotted. Then pay your buddy directly.

Your lost business is not as important as losing their business license, getting sued by the State of CA, or if this were some sort of undercover sting or newspaper story.

CWL, I understand what you are saying

but what I really want is to buy the mags that he needs and have them shipped to his house. That is why I was asking about Brownells or Midway. If their catalog said they won't let anyone from California purchase them at all that would have been cool. I'm frustrated because obviously whoever is checking these orders is not reading what the catalog says. Numrich was more than willing enough to ship me the same sight.

So did you order high cap mags and use your CA address as the billing address (for credit card verification) and give the WA address as the "ship to" address? Maybe they figured you were trying to circumvent the system by shipping them to a buddy in WA and then he ships them to you.
I'd hate to work in their legal department. A zillion stupid laws across 50 states.

Yeah Drew, that is exactly what I did.

What frustrates me is that the catalog specified shipping, not purchase. Hell, if I wanted to get some high cap mags it would be easier to drive to Reno or Grants Pass and break the law. Same thing with the micrometer sight for my Enfield, my reaction was somewhere between *** and "You've Got to be kidding me". If they were that concerned about being scammed you would think they would make it really clear.

When my friend got remarried I sent him and his new wife some stuff from them and it was not a big deal. He also sent me some shooting stuff using the same feature. I fired off an email to them asking them to take a closer look at the order and what I had bought and had shipped to the WA address in the past. I also told them they should rewrite their shipping and purchase policy to make it really clear.

He might just get something from IKEA instead. I know his wife would like that more than 200 bucks worth of magazines!

I called SG when I ordered some 30 round AR mags to be shipped to VA. They said that if your billing address is in MD (my case) they won't ship. I specifically stated that prevented me from purchasing the mags as a gift and she said they still wouldn't ship them.

I was still ticked off till I read some of the responses!

My friend is getting some crap from IKEA instead. At least his wife will be happy! I might still order him some mags from Midway and maybe some other stuff out of Galls. He's going over to the dark side pretty soon, it looks like Seattle PD is going to hire him. Maybe now I can go crazy at Bumbershoot and not worry about getting arrested. Thanks guys.

Hey, that Ikea stuff requires a screwdriver for assembly and a box cutter to open the box up.

Are you sure they'll let you purchase that from California?

Your frustrations with SG are shared by many. I've seen way more complaints than compliments about the business.

For example....you place an order for a Sale item. The website allows you to make the purchase even though it is out of stock. You wait weeks and weeks and then you are billed for the non-sale price once the item is restocked. That's unethical. The website should list the item as "Out of Stock" and should remove its sale price if they plan on stocking the item at the old price.

I'm curious to know of other retailers that will ship to non-CA addresses. I recently moved to Michigan from California and there's a "whole new world" of toys that previously seemed mythical to me. My CC billing address is still CA but Midway had no problem shipping a bunch of mags to me in MI. Anyone know if Andean, CDNN, Cheaper than Dirt or any of the other big mail houses will ship?

My local IKEA store uses a delivery service that must be manned by mental pygmies. I asked that an item I purchased be delivered after as specific time, so that I would be home to sign for it. This delivery outfit returned it to IKEA before 9:30 the same morning, because nobody was there to sign for the boxes. IKEA ended up eating the delivery charge (on the third try with this outfit). They no longer do business with this delivery firm.
