Interesting...again, I ask where did you find the same items for less...free shipping?
And who did you use that did not jack their prices up during the panic?
I'm always looking for ways to save money, so can you provide an example of how you saved money by going through someone else? Just curious.

Seems to depend on what you're looking for.

In my case, usually surplus clothing & equipment.
Only the two problems mentioned, in actually almost 23 years.

I don't buy ammunition from them.
I do get email ads, which are easily deleted.
I find them a handy source for the types of things I look for in specific categories.

I've been buying from the Sportsmen Guide for a number of years, this year I finally joined there club. I have no complaints whatsoever. It seems every time I order something, I receive another $10.00 off coupon to use on my next order. Good company to do business with.

You don't have to order anything first, Google "sportmans guide coupon"

For instance, this months coupon:
$10 Off Orders of $99 or More!
Coupon: COUPON0115
Good through 1/1/15 to 1/31/15

I just emailed them about a expired coupon (12/31/2014) in a promo email I got from them this morning, and in no less than 30 minutes, I got a $10 off any amount coupon.

So far their customer service has been pretty great.

I've done a lot business with them over the years, one year my oldest son (probably 8-9 at the time) walked up to me with a catalog full of stuff circled. And just said Christmas ideas, then walked off.

The pass few years I haven't bought much, if anything, from them for some reason. I guess I find things cheaper else where.

I haven't had any complaints about them, I did return one item once because it broke within a couple days of receiving it, no problems. They even told me that they were planning on discontinuing it due to complaints, but that was probably bull.

I've been buying from Sportsmans Guide since the early nineties. I always enjoy their catalogs, though their pricing isn't as good as in the past and their ads are less clever. I used to love reading their ads like:

Russian Combat Helmet
Great helmet in good condition, perfect to protect your noggin when your wife bonks you on the head for watching too much football...

It was a fun catalogue and they still get some good stuff once in a while.

I like to order milsurp from them, I've gotten some good deals like the Austrian Gore-Tex field jacket and Air Force boots (for awhile my unit was only issuing hot weather boots, you were on the hook if you wanted Gore-Tex and/or insulation).

Occasionally I would order something that was garbage and I'd leave a bad review. The Austrian rucksack, most notably, was inferior to the ALICE ruck in every way (so I just bought the latter). Interestingly, while leaving a bad review would generate a RMA label for me, the review itself was never posted.

Another thing I wanted to reiterate is that besides the 10% off from the buyers club, using your ebates account nets another 5%.

Interesting, I had the same experience, it was a cheap item I wouldn't have bothered trying to return. But I don't seem to ever see positive reviews posted either. Perhaps they are only intended for internal use?

Watch those free gift cards they offer. I found out the hard way they have expiration dates. I would have known if I had just looked at the card itself a little more closely, but honestly, who expects gift cards to expire?

They are hit and miss. I don't think membership is worth while. I have bought some good products from them but the shirts suck. Seems like every time I buy one i end up sending it back with missing buttons or it's a shrunken mess. I can usually find the same deal or better without membership. They do have a good return policy.

Well I got my first order from them today, and here are my thoughts..

1. I didn't really like having a big envelope full of "Junk mail" from other companies such as Dish Network and Globe Life Insurance in the shipment, but if that helps keep costs down, so be it.

2. Their was a magazine in there, which I would of liked to have read, but it looks like someone punched the magazine when they packed it, and it was ripped in several pieces.

3. The shipping box was the size of a shoebox, for just a small tin of pellets.

4. Since they used a whole bunch of packing material, I can re-use it for my eBay sales. :)

5. The shipment was well packed, and came within a reasonable time.

I first found out about Sportsman's Guide by way of their warehouse outlet store, as it turns out that I live only a few miles away. After shopping there and from the website for six months or so, I signed up for the Buyer's Club and have renewed twice since. During the latest panic, my experience (both online and in-store) was that they didn't raise prices as much or as soon as other retailers, but they were very slow to restock and then did bump prices up. Unfortunately, they are no longer really competitive with ammo prices for the calibers I shoot. However, I do continue to buy hiking and camping supplies from them, as well as some mil-surp stuff every now and then. Because I can just walk in, buying clothes and shoes is risk-free.

Been with them off and on for 25+ years. If you know what your are doing you can find good prices on optics, mags and other stuff like ammo. Knowing what you are doing means waiting for coupons, free shipping, double member discounts and then doubling down during your membership renewal. They usually give you free shipping + extra discount when renewing so that's when I order heavy stuff like ammo. If you hold off in renewing they often up the ante and add additional discounts or gift coupons.

After many years I finally let my membership only for the fact that in the gulag I like to call NY where I live we can no longer purchase mail order ammo delivered to the house and that is the majority of buying I did with SG. I still buy some small things now and again, but it doesn't warrant the cost of the membership.

I haven't dealt with them in about 10 years and the last thing I bought from them was a swing for the deck. I started buying from them in the pre-internet days when their printed catalog was a great source of information and ideas. Now there are 100 other places that pop up in a Google search but back then there were only the 3-4 companies that mailed you a catalog plus whatever brick and mortar stores that happened to be nearby to choose from.

My only real complaint with them was that their shipping rates seemed to be used to recoup some of their pricing discount. I recall shipping being quite a bit higher than other mail order retailers---but as I said that was 10+ years ago and it may have changed.

Gary Olen.....

To clarify: it's Gary Olen not Owen. :D
As posted, Olen may have sold the firm but he's still listed on the Sportsman Guide homepage as the "founder".

I did notice SG got a new image & look(logo) about 18mo ago so if they changed owners it makes sense.

Well I have not ordered from Sportsmans Guide in the last 8 years or so but I still get the catalogs every month or so. CTD also sends me theirs as well even though I have not purchased anything from there for at least 10 years. It seems there is a better deal out there somewhere else when I start digging on line for an item I want. To avoid the junk email I just tell the store when ordering on the phone I do not have a computer/email. I get paper reading material to peruse while spending time on the can.:D What I have purchased from either company was OK and a deal but have not purchased from either one recently.
