First Order with Sportsman Guide

I ordered a bunch of .308 from them their last sale... they took the order, gave me a confirmation number, sent me TWO postcards in the mail confirming my order, then told me I would have to pay nearly double for the ammo... when I cancelled, they sent it anyway and billed my CC. Been fighting with them for months. They want me to pay a restock fee to return ammo for an order I cancelled. And this is AFTER they reniged on a confirmed order for a confirmed price.

I wouldn't urinate in Gary Olen's mouth if his teeth were on fire. First time buyer, LAST time buyer. Never again, SG.
And I'm not alone in that feeling.
They pulled the same stunt with Wolf ammo twice now, AK magazines, .223 ammo last year, and the .308 OFV Xmas last year.
Plus I got email spam daily and catalogs for furniture and knickknacks every week. At least I had tinder for the fireplace.

Backorders are common

I was never asked to pay the higher price

But I did stop ordering them when they shipped me the wrong ammo and it took me months to get it cleared up...including them trying to reship me the same ammo

I returned the first batch...no problem

They reshipped me the same stuff

Then they claimed they could not take back ammo (like the first batch they took back)

It was not pretty...their prices are NOT good enough to put up with that kind of customer service

I have had pretty good experiences with SG. One cheap flashlight they sent me did not work.

On my first order, I ordered a 5 pack of Hungarian 20 rnd AK mags. After being "in stock", they were backordered. Two months later, I got some crapola USA mags in their place. I had to pay shipping to send them back. I'll never order from them again.

Several months ago I ordered some Wolf .45ACP from SG. For some reason, the 250rd pack was significantly cheaper per round than the 500rd and 1000rd packs. I think it was just a mistake on their part. So I ordered 4 of the 250rd packs for a lot less than it would have cost to get 2 of the 500s or 1 of the 1000s. Within a couple of days of placing the order, the price on the website was increased so that it was more in line with the other prices. To their credit, SG charged me the published price at the time of the order, rather than trying to get me to pay the "correct" price.

Here is the url for Outdoor Marksmen. http://buyammo.com/buyammo.php
Last time I bought from them at the gunshow a few months ago I bought 500 rounds of reloaded .38 158 SWC for around $50.00 in a nice ammo can. I did not think the price was too bad and all of it I have shot so far (about 1\2) has had zero problems.

Sports Mans Guide has been hit or miss for me. They carry alot of surplus and older items that are uncommon.

Now Cheaper Than Dirt I will never do buisness with. I'm with the Special Operations Training Group, I tell people they have horrible customer service and routinely I hear 'bad' things about them weekly from my students. That is if they can get thier orders shipped to CA.

Another happy SG customer here.

I order a lot of ammo from them. I always manage to find what I’m looking for in stock at good prices. I also find the brand of ammo I like. The order arrives at least the day before shooting day. :D

Thought I would post a follow-up to close the loop on this transaction. I did receive what I would treat as a confirmation of my order a few days ago. I received notice today that my order has shipped. My first expience with them has been positive.

In fact, I just checked the tracking number and it is shown as delivered.

Placed my first order with SG last nite for 1000rd Wolf 62gr .223. The online catalog showed available; however, when I got my order confirmation it indicated estimated delivery of December 31, 2007. Is this a common occurance with them? Not a good way to start a relationship.
Unfortunately, it can be a not infrequent occurance. They didn't used to be this way, but I believe they were bought up by some multi-national retailer a couple of years ago and things have gone downhill since then.

Not ammo-related, but I've been engaged in a shell game with them for almost a year. Around this time last year, my brother-in-law (who never asks for anything) let slip to my wife that he would really like a green M1A style flight jacket for Christmas. Sportsmans Guide had several in their catalog (at varying price points), so I called to order it. It seemed like a good thing I called instead of ordering on-line, because most of the better quality ones (if price is an indicator) were either out of stock or not available in green. So we settled on one of the lower-priced ones, the girl assured me it was in stock, and the deal was sealed.

Except that within about ten days we got a notice that the item was out of stock, but would be in stock and they expected to ship on January 3, 2007. Did I wish to keep it on backorder, or cancel?

I smelled a rat. And I can always use a spare, inexpensive jacket to carry in the back of one of the Jeeps, so I sent back the card and said to keep it on backorder. Meanwhile, I sent my wife over to the local Army-Navy store where (for twice the price plus a bit) she found just the jacket her brother was looking for.

Every thirty days since then I have received a card from Sportsmans Guide, informing me that the item has been unexpectedly delayed but will be in soon, with an expected ship date that is always just about 35 days out. Well, this chile' was born at night, but it wasn't LAST night. I know damned well that they aren't going to be restocking winter jackets in April or May or June, or probably not even July. They WANT me to cancel the backorder, because they know they'll never be able to buy it this year as cheap as they bought it last year. I just keep on playing. It isn't like I NEED this jacket, yet it's not so expensive that if it shows up I'll have to take out a second mortgage to pay for it. So I just keep telling them to continue the backorder. They're getting desparate now -- the last two times, they've CALLED to ask it I want to continue, and within a week of my saying "Yes, keep it on backorder" I get another card, pushing the anticipated ship date out yet another 35 days.

You'll get your ammo -- some day -- unless you don't. Don't make any plans that rely on having it by a specific date, though.
