So a group of co-workers were gathered in the hall discussing the situation and amazingly the topic of HB 1572 came up (allowing CCW on college campuses). More amazingly I didn't bring it up, someone else did.

Them: "Good lord, can you imagine what would have happened if that law (HB1572) had passed?"

Me: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure a lot less people would have died"

Them (agast): "What!?!"

Me: "Well, we now know what happens when you ban self-defense and a criminal/madman decides to ignore that ban. He's the only one with the power and he uses it freely to wreak as much havoc as possible 'cause nobody can stop him. If somebody else had been armed they might have at least stood a chance."

Them: "But if other people had guns now I have to worry about them shooting me as well, even if it's accidentally, 'cause there are more guns. I'd rather wait for the police to show up".

Me: "Okay, aside from the fact that it took TWO HOURS for the police to show up, when they arrive then there is a LOT more guns. Aren't you more afriad of being shot then?"

Them: "Oh no, the police are there to protect me, they'd never shoot me."

Me: "You honestly believe that the police have never shot anyone accidentally?"

Them: "I have to get back to work now".

Hey right on.
I actually think we need to take the offensive. Remember the old saying "the best defense is a great offensive"? Let's start pointing out exactly what you said. To that end, I've drafted a letter to the editor of my local rag. Here's a copy for your consideration.

I would like to weigh in on the Virginia Tech shootings. Yes, it was horrific and we need some action. However, the answer isn’t more laws on firearms. If you look at the existing laws, it was illegal to have a weapon on the college campus, just like in Ohio. So would more laws have prevented a criminal from acting, I think we can agree the answer is no.
So, what is the solution? Well, I can assure you that, just like in the Trolley Mall shooting, a person with a concealed weapon could engaged the shooter long enough to allow Law Enforcement to arrive. Let’s face it, as good as our peace officers are, they are not everyplace, nor do we want then to be.
There was a bill, House Bill 1572, in the Virginia legislature to allow people with permits to carry on campus, but it was defeated. According to a Roanoke Times article dated 31Jan06 - Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. "I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." Just think if a law-abiding trained and screened permit holder was there, perhaps several young children would be alive now.
Isn’t it about time we started to address the real issue - people need to take responsibility for their own safety, and the lawmakers need to help this by removing limits on where permit holders can defend themselves. If not, perhaps we need to start holding the lawmakers responsible for their inactions.
