I am going into town in the AM and will be stocking up on some 22lr ammo. This will be primarily for plinking varmints. What is your preference when it comes to brands and such here?

I am leaning towards the CCI Stinger shells but who knows, maybe I'll try something else based on your recommends...

Mini-mags are the perfect price to performance ratio for me. Haven't seen anything yet that doesn't digest them.

CCI Minimag HPs are my #1 choice, I also use the Velocitors. Stingers don't give the accuracy I want and I just don't think they're worth the extra $.

My rifle likes CCI Stingers, but the handguns not so much. They're partial to CCI mini-mags. In all of them I'll shoot Winchester Wildcats or Remington Thunderbolts for plinking at tin cans. For more serious shooting or hunting, I always go back to the CCIs.

for plinking, whatever is cheapest. usually rem thunderbolt($1 box) but for murdering woodland creatures aguilla super max(same as stingers, but cheaper):neener:

I'd suggest buying a box of as many different types of .22 ammo that are available locally. Try them all, and then stock up on the brand/type that works well for your gun.

I usually buy Federal cause it's the cheapest copper-coated .22 ammo at wal-mart.

Winchester bulk hollowpoints from Wal-mart in everything but my Colt Woodsman, which doesn't like the wide hollowpoint. For that gun, I buy Remington bulk hollowpoints.

Oops, just noticed this was a revolver ammo question. Never mind.

While CCI Stingers are the fastest round available I prefer CCI Velocitors because they are 40 gr instead of 32 gr like the Stingers. They stay true a little better in windy conditions.

I was at the store a few times this month and I saw something new. (well, new to me, don't know if they are really new) CCI has a SGB round out that's supposed to be specifically made for Small Game. You might want to buy a box of 50 and give them a try. (If you do please make a report LOL) The SGB load has the same velocity and energy as the Mini-Mag but it's a LFN round for penetration. I would say a flat nose round would probably be the best hunting round. http://www.cci-ammunition.com/ballistics/rimfire.aspx

Aguila Super Maximum's 30 grainers achieve rifle velocities out of my revolvers. The are cheaper and faster than Stingers.

I've been happy w/ the Wolf match target rounds for reliability and accuracy, but I'd get other opinions on their potential as a varmint round. Wolf compares favorably to CCI price-wise.

DMZ,
Aguila's 30 gr round actually has a higher volicity than the 32 gr Stingers at 1640 fps??? I couldn't check because the Aquila site has been down for the past several months.

I have to agree.

Stingers are fun to shoot. Some sixguns really seem to like them (accuracy), others don't.

All of my .22lr shooting is target work or plinking. Whan I take my son and daughter to the range we are either shooting 50 yards at sillouhettes, Rams, pigs, geese and chickens, or we are shooting 50 feet 25 yards with pistols and revolvers. We often go through 500 rounds in a 2 hour session.

My match grade guns say no stingers, they are longer in the case than normal .22lr and produce erratic accuracy for me. They are too damn expensive, and I can shoot my handloaded .45 acp cheaper.

I use in order cheapest to most expensive:

Federal copper plated Bulk pack.
Federal high velocity target.
Winchester Dynapoints (hard to find).
CCI standard Velocity (target Pistols)
Aguilla standard velocity('')
Federal Gold Medal match (target rifles like my Anschutz)
Wolf match Target.

Remington anything used to be ok but in the last few years turned to real unreliable inconsistant crap.
