More Automatic Assault Rifle Mayhem

Yep, I've seen several reports which described the rifle an SKS, and also described it as "automatic" - two mutually-exclusive words (unless the shooter's gunsmithing skills were several orders of magnitude better than his marksmanship...)

A sniper throws 70+ rounds for five that includes himself, hopeful
he works for enemy army. Somehow I don't recall a sniper's arm
of choice being automatic in any army?

I thought the two young ladies who were being interviewed by cell did a rather good job. they sounded like mid to late teens. clearley identified it as a semi auto. rough numbers of rounds expended, where the rounds were being fired from (at this time the first office appears to have been shot at close range) etc. the "reporter" sounded like he didn't believe them.

and there are reports this morning that very few people are talking to the media walking the streets for interviews.

most of the hospital staff here that I have talked to about it are much less than happy with the media.

Well the media does have an agenda to push.

I know plenty of people in Moscow, most of those are firearms owners.

An acquaintance of ours is in the Moscow PD, he was recently out of town regarding the last shooting they had, the student that was shot, Boss was his surname.

Haven't asked him about any of it yet... tough situation... we were supposed to get together and go to the range, I think he'll probably be quite busy for a while now.

Sorry, have to post here about the "ability" of the murderer. It doesn't matter. ONE person killed because of this waste of meat's idiocy is too much. Suggest we calm down on the rhetoric and stop talking about his "ability" to hit things with an SKS. We need to focus on the damage control, find out what happened, why it happened, and WHERE he got the SKS. Then, we get ready for the deluge of more gun control legislation that is the typical knee-jerk reaction of all this. :banghead:

Tinygnat219 has it right. Let this thing unfold. Who was he? What's his background? Why did he do it? What did he use and where/how did he get it?

I don't have an SKS (yet), but what would it take to convert one to full auto? Could it be done with tools in an average Joe's garage? Could it be done just by modifying existing parts, or would you have to swap in parts?

I've been on the street where it happened, if that guy is a "Sniper" then I'm a freaking minute of milk jug uber sniper...

All that the media are doing are talking in 'ill-informed' terms on what they percieved, was the correct term for a marksman shooting at people, from a distance.Over here they call people like that,'gunmen. The fact that it doesn't sound like a 'proper' sniper, doesn't matter to them-one bit.

The Hungerford killer, who did shoot at people from a distance,.was also called a sniper,(By the press.)where he opend fire on a police helicopter, with an AK47.Similer types of ignorant media persons.

Maybe they have been watching too much of Bruce Willis,in action films.:)

Two things:

(1) I don't think an SKS was ever designed with fully automatic capabilities in mind.

(2) If it were possible, it'd be illegal to do unless you happened to find a full automatic "parts gun" that was registered before 1986, and you paid the $200 NFA tax stamp to legally transfer ownership of said parts gun to yourself from another legal owner.

An SKS is semi-auto by design, can be illegally converted but runs the risk of blowing up in your face. Saw footage of what was supposed to be magazines (media calls them clips) on the ground, looked more like dog turds than anything else.

There are some SKS rifles that did come with higher capacity magazines, they are Chinese.

Plenty of SKS available in Moscow, currently one being sold online under sports and rec at this website hosetd in Moscow: http://www.palouseadds.com/default.aspx?src=menu&cat=26

Also available at Big-5...

I'm not blaming the machine, the human operating the machine it to blame.

there you go gents, I did your homework for you, now will you get off your butts and complain to what ever news source you get YOUR news from? the local stations are getting sick of hearing from me.

todate: the reports from the PD's office and news reports say the shooter used:
full or semi auto sks
full or semi auto AKA 47
full or semi auto Ak 47
full or semi auto M1A
M1 Carbine.

some data indicates firearms were stolen from ex wife when he killed her (1st victim). reports of broken gun locks.

DC Duke does lousy press conferences. (at one point informing us that the shooter wasn't prohibited from owning and several minutes later telling us he WAS prohibited under a RO) for some reason he dislikes using his Press Liason.

and K3. I've been watching people go back and forth to SD's Jordans room all day. this is NOT a happy place to be right now. but if I get the chance I would like to extend the feelings of the denizens of the Hight Road but YOURS will not be the ones I extend. have a little sympathy for those of us still living with this.

but I am VERY pleased to report that I saw SD Jordan up and around. and I understand that the "civilian" (Pete Husmann, who is seldom mentioned except as "a civilian") who came to Officer Newbell's assitance and was shot is doing better as well.

Idaho Gunman Targeted People He Knew

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
The Associated Press
Tuesday, May 22, 2007; 8:02 AM

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Jason Hamilton unleashed his deadly rampage on people he knew: his wife, sheriff's deputies at the courthouse where she worked, the caretaker of a church across the street.

The 36-year-old was already known in the small college town of Moscow for a troubled past before Saturday night's shooting rampage. He had been arrested for domestic violence, had attempted suicide and had warned a mental health worker that if he did kill himself, he would take others with him.

But in the end, Hamilton left no obvious reason for the violence that left four people, including himself, dead.

"We have not found any note," said David Duke, assistant chief of the Moscow Police Department. "We do not have any motive at this time. We have no idea."

Hamilton had been drinking at a Moscow bar Saturday night but showed no sign of distress, police said.

Some time after 10 p.m., he returned home and fatally shot his 30-year-old wife, Crystal, in the head, Duke said.

Around 11 p.m., he drove to the Latah County Courthouse, armed with two semiautomatic rifles. Standing outside the courthouse, which houses the sheriff's department, Hamilton fired some 125 bullets into the sheriff's dispatch center and vehicles in a parking lot, authorities said.

He shot and killed one law enforcement officer and wounded Pete Husmann, 20, a University of Idaho mechanical engineering student from Coeur d'Alene. Husmann had armed himself and run to the sound of the shots. Two other law enforcement officers were wounded, Duke said.

Hamilton then moved across the street to the First Presbyterian Church.

Church sexton Paul Bauer, 62, was fatally shot while he tried to call 911; dispatchers could hear the gunfire, Duke said.

Hamilton fired an additional 60 to 80 rounds from inside the church before killing himself around 1 a.m. Sunday, Duke said. An AK-47 rifle was found next to his body.

While Hamilton appears to have at first targeted law enforcement, Duke said there was no sign that he had a particular grudge. Hamilton also knew Bauer, who lived at the church, from his job cleaning First Presbyterian for a private maintenance service, Duke said.

Local law enforcement knew Hamilton, he said. In 2005, Hamilton had been arrested for domestic violence against a woman with whom he was having an extramarital affair, and he was sentenced to two years probation. He was not to possess firearms during that time, but he already had the rifles, Duke said.

On Feb. 16, Hamilton attempted suicide by overdosing on anti-anxiety medication, and was evaluated twice for involuntary mental health commitment, Duke said.

Hamilton told one mental health professional that if he were really to commit suicide, he would do it through a mass shooting or bombing in which others would die, Duke said. But he later said he wasn't serious, Duke said. Hamilton was judged not to need involuntary commitment and was released.

On May 15, just days before the shootings, he was in court again for allegedly violating the conditions of his probation by halting his mental health counseling, Duke said. The case wasn't resolved that day, and another hearing had been planned for mid-June.

Duke said police found Crystal Hamilton's body Sunday morning, after the shootings at the church and courthouse. The information about her death wasn't immediately released so relatives could be notified, he said.

Duke was back and forth with the name of the ak47.. he called it an ak47 and an sks... Jason also had an M1A rifle..

My wife confirmed that we did indeed know the Officer who died.

Don;t you have give up your guns for domestic violence and probation.

Why did the cops let him keep his rifles, is the law different in Idaho?

On the news last night the reporter said the shooter was unable to own firearms legally because he had mental problems and commited to a mental institution. It sounds like from this article that he was only observed at the mental hospital and the reason he couldn't own guns was because of the domestic violence charges.

The shooter had MULTIPLE disqualifying events/circumstances yet we've heard NOTHING about what the weapon was, how it was obtained and equally important how he was allowed to retain it after the restraining order etc etc etc.

Would not surprise me if there was a coverup going on....

Never underestimate the power of pure stupidity. The medical and legal community in this case heard what they wanted to hear and believed what they wanted to believe.

Sniper!?

From the first article cited . . .
A sniper sprayed dozens of bullets on a courthouse . . .
How wrong is this . . . let me count the ways . . .

First up, we have "A sniper sprayed . . ." which, all by its lonesome is good for a laugh. Yes, that's what makes snipers so deadly; it's that hose-of-death thing.

Next up, ". . . sprayed dozens of bullets . . ." which, from a weapon capable of "spraying" takes seconds, not hours.

But wait, "A sniper . . . bullets on a courthouse", which again should bring a chuckle. It would only be funnier if it said "a barn." Uh, dude, what cartridge for courthouse?

And all of this in a single sentence.

Gads. The mirth of it all.
