These results were quite surprising, considering my top three go - Thompson, Paul, Huckabee, in that order and I despise McCain.

1. Theoretical Ideal Candidate (100%)
2. John McCain (62%)
3. Newt Gingrich (62%)
4. Ron Paul (59%)
5. Fred Thompson (56%)
6. Chuck Hagel (55%)
7. Tom Tancredo (55%)
8. Duncan Hunter (53%)
9. Mitt Romney (52%)
10. Kent McManigal (52%)
11. Sam Brownback (49%)
12. Jim Gilmore (49%)
13. Rudolph Giuliani (48%)
14. Tommy Thompson (44%)
15. Al Gore (35%)
16. Christopher Dodd (34%)
17. Bill Richardson (33%)
18. Hillary Clinton (33%)
19. Joseph Biden (32%)
20. Mike Huckabee (32%)

Oh, and for the 'Paul' folks, where is this question?

If a violent, historically terrorist nation kills our soldiers and plots our destruction (while building nukes), what do you do?

*kick their butt
*surrender at once, and lock yourself in your home while shouting, their is no evil in the world! (a la Ron Paul)

By definition Libertarians are not Imperialists, kinda like the Swiss. I support a militarily isolationist state, while supporting moderate impartial philanthropy abroad. I'm pretty sure Dr. Paul feels the same way.

While I consider the attacks against the US to be monstrous, there has been more than 100 years of opportunistic imperial foreign policy that has created aggression toward the US. If support is to be be offered to these allies in the Arab peninsula I believe it would be best delivered in a covert manner.

Imagine if you grew up with US soldiers kicking down your door to search your house, would you grow up to preach tolerance? Or would you remember you mother and sisters sitting in the dirt while infidels trash your house? The Americans showed the world in 1776 you do not need a superior army to win a war, you need desire to win for your family and what you know is right.

I do not support inflammatory foreign policy, which creates new enemies.

By the way I have 7 foreign deployments (3 haz duty) and I am not a pacifist.

Steak, I'm starting to see a pattern.

Wow, I'm impressed with that poll. In my opinion, it did a great job of removing the "emotion" from the decision making process. My #2 and #3 were Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter, (Ron Paul at #3) and I'll agree that I'd prefer at least the first two, but I've been more in support of Fred Thompson largely on the basis that I think he might be "Good Enough" to win the Presidency and certainly better than Rudy McRomney or the Democrats.

Ron Paul would be a shoe-in if he didn't have such an idiotically libertarian international policy. Unfortunately, the poll didn't have incrimental importance assessment: immigration/national consolidation and civil liberties are my two big issues, and while RP is great on civil liberties, he's an absolute dog for national interests.

ETA: I should note my percentage of agreement is pretty damn low with all of the candidates:

2. Tom Tancredo (72%)
3. Duncan Hunter (65%)
4. Mitt Romney (63%)
5. Ron Paul (63%)
6. Chuck Hagel (59%)
7. John McCain (57%)
8. Kent McManigal (55%)
9. Newt Gingrich (54%)
10. Fred Thompson (51%)
11. Jim Gilmore (50%)

The rest are all below 50%, and even though the only reason I'd have any agreement with the likes of Obama and Hillary would be because they're lying, they're still in the 30-40% range. They really needed to weigh the importance of an issue with something more than just two importance categorizations.

I also did not see,
If we overthrow an elected lawful government, impose sanctions, and force our ideas on another country, and they object. We should
a. Invade them.
b. Nuke them.
c. Apologize and trade honestly.
d None

That was in a different quiz - "World War II: What Would You Do?" - where the questions pertained to Germany and Japan, I think.

Now WRT the poll, I have to say that I just plain don't give a crap about a number of the issues.

School vouchers? No good way out of that. I'm no fan of the public school system, but I'm no fan of wrecking the private alternatives by placing them under Federal control, either.

"End all Federal involvement in education, by the legislative and executive branches of government, and all judicial involvement except WRT Constitutional decisions by the SCOTUS, and leave it up to state and local entities" wasn't a choice. Neither was, "Abolish unions for government employees," or "abolish public education altogether, provide tax breaks for all education costs, education tax credits for the poor, and tax-free charitable contributions to the broad variety of educational institutions."

Vouchers are a deal with the devil, in my view. So no answer was a good one.

WRT "gay rights", which was really about "gay marriage" and said nothing about the broad spectrum of civil rights that homosexuals share with the rest of the population, I just don't give a crap. The President shouldn't give a crap, either. Not his/her job. I put "not very important", but that's not really true. As a libertarian, I would like to see deregulation of marriage contracts. At the same time, I oppose Federally-enforced special rights for any group.

Of course I support gay rights, like anyone else's rights. But I don't think we need another group to be added to affirmative action, etc. No special restrictions, no special rights. Marriage is another issue, where I have a "third way" opinion not on the list.

Regardless, I'm not putting too much stock in it.

According to them somewhere deep down in my physche I must support the second ammendment and the AWB....:what:

Then I noticed this on their explanation of the candidates positions:

Gun control: Mitt Romney, who has touted his support of gun owners since launching his presidential campaign, yesterday acknowledged he did not become a member of the National Rifle Association until last August, campaign officials said. A former advocate of gun control, Romney during his 1994 run for the US Senate backed measures the gun-rights group opposed, such as a five-day waiting period on gun sales and a ban on certain assault weapons. Source

So they have Romney pegged as pro gun he only used to be an anti. Hold on sec :barf::barf::barf::barf::barf:

Okay I am better now.

Wait a second...

Health care: The health of our nation can be improved by extending health insurance to all Americans, not through a government program or new taxes, but through market reforms. Source

And against socialized medicine oh no... :barf::barf::barf::barf:

Okay I am just going to stop looking now.... appears as though they may be a little mixed up over there.

My top two were 65% Obama, 64% Ron Paul.

Interesting. :scrutiny:

Do those two candidates have anything in common in their positions?

Yeah, it looks like they have him dialed in based on his offical platform. It is obvious Romney's official platform is full of a lot of bullcrap when based on his record.

Just like someone else here said, the only reason some of these candidates are registering large percentages is because those candidates are lying about their true position on issues.

I took it on another forum earlier today.

1) Theoretical candidate 100%
2 Ron Paul 82%
3 Kent McManigal 72%

The rest of the mooks in line started with John "the Manchurian" McStain :barf:and slid Hellward from there.

Anyone scoring over 50% with Kucinich, Biden, Clinton, Obamanation, or any of the other Marxist need to report to political realignment class immediately!

:D

How did THAT happen lol

I'm liberal/libertarian... I agree with Ron Paul on most civil rights issues, but I fall to the left on social issues (pro-choice, pro-stem cell research, and for allowing gay couples to have the same legal benefits as any married couple). I'm only moderately tolerant of social programs. I do lean pretty strongly to the left for environmental issues, following the idea that government must prevent the tragedy of the commons. I'm also very much against corporate influence in politics, so I do have pretty strong anti-business views. Oh, and in the survey, I strongly favored candidates who were against the Iraq invasion (before it happened).

Of course, where I really break with the modern Republican viewpoint is that I favor balancing the budget -- and by any means necessary.

Essentially, my views favor individual rights over collective... which means I disagree with just about everyone. :p An exception is that I do favor limited social programs, the idea being that a guaranteed "safety net", whether it be medical or financial, is desirable. Such programs typically benefit the disadvantaged (and really, any one of us could suffer from misfortune and need help), and are worthwhile insofar as they really are a "safety net" and not merely a means of redistributing wealth.

OK, I have no right to vote in your country, dont really follow your politics, but, based solely on how i read the questions and applied them to my views (and how i would choose)

Gun control: The Second Amendment specifically and clearly forbids the government from passing any laws regarding weapons. However, it merely recognizes a pre-existing right and does not grant a right. Rights do not come from government and cannot be revoked by government. All gun laws are counterfeit laws.

Armed Bear,
Can we please accept that, when arguing about candidates, that we're talking about 68% vs. 42%, or 80% vs. 50%, or 70% vs. 65%, or whatever?
Not really. The fact that I only agree with Paul 2/3 of the time doesn't mean that I'd support Hillary.

There are other intangibles we are selecting that override specific issues. For me those would be integrity, honesty, rationality, and overall guiding philosophy. That's what makes me supportive of Paul. My #2 choice would be Wesley Clark even though I disagree with his positions on many issues that are important to me (not the least of which is RKBA), he's still far more suited to lead the country than Thompson IMO. Of course, Clark isn't running...

By the way, just what were your poll results? They seem to be missing.

I only match up with Kent McManigal 90% when I take the test. Which is kinda funny... since he is me. Ron Paul comes in 2nd.

Since I consistently vote Libertarian, and since odds are against Ron Paul getting the GOP position, you will get my vote in the general election. I must be you also since I scored McManigal 90% with Ron Paul second at 88%.

When I looked at your writeup, my wife and I had a good laugh as your innovative "zero minimum wage" concept; a good way to put it.

Well, I don't give much credence to these things, but I guess I'll play along.

2. Ron Paul (77%)
3. Kent McManigal (68%)

By the way, Dull'Hawk, hilarious! Glanced over your views. Agree with a lot of them (maybe 68%? :p).

Cheers, all.

I think the reason I only score 90% agreement with myself is that I want alternative answers for some of their questions. Someone from the LP forwarded a questionaire to me from Selectsmart, and then some glitch lost it when I tried to send it in to them. Worse, it would not let me try again. So I wrote them and they sent me the questions, which I answered. Then they wrote back with additional questions they had forgotten to include the first time. Then when I took the selector quiz I was frustrated at not being able to choose my real answer to some questions. I also think they left out a lot of critical questions.
Still, it's an interesting quiz. That "Theoretical Candidate" must be some really good politician to be able to be "all things to all people". :p
