So... I'm about to buy a Kel Tec. Factory new. Seems to be the consensus that I shouldn't buy one of the first generation ones. How can I identify the difference between a first generation Kel Tec and a second generation. Are there still a great many of the first generation pistols out there, new and on the rack? Does this apply to just one of the Kel Tec models or more than one?

there's gonna be more 2nd than 1st. 1st are probably still out there. Head over to KTOG (Kel Tec Owners Group) to find out the difference... I think the easiest sign is the location of the serial number, but I could be mistaken.

Easy

You'll find pics at ktog, but they aren't really needed. The 2nd gen slide is much more square and it has a HUGE hex nut on the extractor (Frankenbolt).

Factory new means 2G only. New first gens are long gone, although some dealers may still have a few on the shelf.

You need to specify which Kel-Tec you are going to buy. There is no 1st or 2nd generation P-11. There are 1G & 2G P-32s and P-3ATS. The 2G models are easy to tell by their blocky slides and the large buttonhead screw holding the extractor.

P32 first or second generation are 100% reliable
P3AT first gen was more hit and miss but generally you could get it to be reliable with a full and buff. The second generation (I just bought one) is generally considered reliable and from my view of the new gun is much better machined out of the box than my P32 or P11.
