Best gun

I don't own one, nor does anyone on this forum (prove me wrong if you own one, lucky bastage).

If I remember correctly, it fires upwards of 6,000 rounds per minute.

Type of ammo is 7.62x51mm NATO.

for the 100th time, it all depends on how you define best?

Is BEST the one that puts up the smallest group size?
Is BEST the one that can stand up to the longest torture test?
Is BEST the one that holds it's monitary value at or above inflation rates?
Is BEST the one the average person can best bring to bear and deliver on-torso hits in the smallest amount of time?

I find these "best" questions bothersome. What's "best" is way too broad and subjective to give a definitive answer to. That said, the first thing that came to mind was the lowly Winchester '94 30-30. It's probably as good an answer as any.

Best all around gun, with no other qualifiers to consider? Smith & Wesson Model 629 .44 Magnum revolver, with a 4" barrel, and no internal locking system.

For hunting big game (or even small game, with the right reduced power load), it would have to be any number of bolt-action rifles chambered in .30-06 Springfield. Personally, I'm partial to the Ruger KM77VT MKII, but they don't actually make it in .30-06 Springfield anymore (if they ever did, I'm a little unclear on the history, so feel free to enlighten me because I'd really like one in .30-06).

If I were allowed to have only ONE firearm, it would be a 12ga. Most versatile, non-pretentious piece of arse-kicking tool.

So that's MY best gun.

i did see something on the military channel today about the ten best rifles ever made.

the nagant didnt make the list for some reason, but i wouldve put it in the top ten... the springfield 03 was number 8. the k98 was number 6. i think the m14 was number 10. the m16 was number 2. somewhere in there there was a styer AUG. i think the early enfields came in number 3. number one, obviously, was the AK in any form.

the m1 garand had greta reviews though and was 4th i think. i thought it would have done a little better in there. i still plan on getting one sometime...as well as an enfield and an m14 and an AK...someday

That's like asking what the best shoes are. The most expensive pair of shoes for a ballet dancer aren't going to be worth a snit to a football player.

...so that the argument can be over.
Muahahahaha
Many a refreshing frosty adult beverage has been consumed over many campfires over many many years arguing this very point (and others).

Suffice it to say that a Swedish Mauser 96 in 6.5x55 is the single "best" gun ever pulled out of it's box in the entire history of mankind weaponry. :D

Tho' I will say that I have found one or two unenlightened individuals who'll actually challenge that god-given truth (can you imagine?). To them I can only shake my head in amazement and offer to let them shoot 20 rds thru mine. It does tend to shake their belief and give them pause to wonder.

My dear old departed Dad used to tell me that his Springfield 03 was the best, until he shot my Swede. He saw the light and then and there converted into a true believer (he went out and bought his own for a whopping $79.95... this was back in the day when 3 boxes of ammo cost just as much as the rifle mind you) tho' on his deathbed he repented and told me it was still the '03. (backsliding on such an important belief can only earn him a place in that great gunsmith shop in the sky converting Japanese Nambu 94 pistols into good looking, safe target pistols, a Promethean punishment for sure) ;)

Whaddyagonnado?

So tell your friends, you've got the answer. Note that the Swiss K-31 comes in a close runnerup, and I think that maybe up in the rarified air of the Alp mountains it might actually be considered bes... no! I can't blaspheme! I shall not! The Nordic Gods of Valhalla are watching and listening, tempting me into uttering falsehoods. I must remain strong. :p

Best Rifle, value wise, for big game? (say white tail deer, mule deer, big horned sheep, elk, moose, black bear, etc)

Bolt action rifle from one of the big makers, Winchester, Remington, Savage, Ruger, Browning. Winchester guns are going up in price due to dropping availability, so unless you are a collector you are out.

I think of the remaining (hell, even with winchesters back in the running) Remington 700 boltaction is the BEST, but Savage makes a very good gun with an excellent trigger for enough less money, that dollar for dollar, Savage boltaction would be what I chose.

Now, for the average male adult, I'd pair the Savage boltgun up with 30-06 chambering.

The 'best gun out of the box' is one that shoots first time every time.....But that said, IMO the best are Savage. Good triggers, superb barrels and a good action. Hits where its pointed - repeatedly - keeping it there is up to you..... >MW

Shotgun. I prefer an 870, but a lot will do.

Because your being vague a shotgun can cover many different things. You can load birdshot in it to shoot birds, and then switch over to slugs to shoot deer. Just versatile IMO.
