Hunting with silencers

We call silencers moderators, as they moderate the noise instead of silencing it entirely. You can silence a rifle (or at least .22s) if you have a moderator and sub-sonic loads. There's still a little whoosh of air and a noise from the trigger working.

I've only used moderators on 22lr and .308. On a .308 with normal bullets it makes the noiselevel a lot less irritating. The noise travels a lot less and thus is less likely to disturb nearby animals or people. A 22lr is also much less sharp, meaning I can comfortably shoot a lot without wanting earplugs. I've heard a .243 moderated and that was also a lot less annoying. also .223 for foxes with subsonics and that was very quiet. I was 20 feet away and only heard a click.

Depending where you shoot using moderators can be a requirement.

I bet fosberry knows more, the wierdo. He probably has a moderated .50bmg.

Yeah, I didn't use the proper term for here either. They are properly called sound suppressors here.

Thanks for the info.
How loud is the crack to the shooter using regular super sonic rounds?

I don't know the level in decibels. The only way I can describe it is more like snapping a dry branch than a real rifle shot. Someone 100 feet away would hear it but probably not think it was a rifle shot.

I'll check my magazines when I get home. I'm sure there was a chart for .223 & .308 in one recently.

True silencers are a class III item and require a special permit. While they won't give movie quality performance they do reduce noise significantly. Be aware there is a slight trade off of ballistics and other performance.

Check your local/state laws.

As an example of why that's important--while it's legal to own a silencer in Texas (after jumping through the proper legal hoops), it's not legal to hunt with one.

...Sound suppressors are a class-III item FEDERALY, and this places the same governing law as applies to full auto firearms in control of thier possession and use.

In Maryland (where I live) it may be perfectly legal since there are no specific laws saying they cannot be used and there is no all encompassing declaration such as "only approved hunting devices may be used". In MD it seems apparent that silencers may be lawfully used for hunting.
Some people in MD actively hunt with silencers.

No supressors in California. None. They basically told me I was stupid for even asking. I'll be moving soon, as soon as I can find a state that won't shun me for being a Californian.
