Life, Death, and Suffering.

Thernlund, next time you see your friend. It is harmful to HIS soul to have such an attitude. For those that believe in the Lord to mistreat animals is akin to blasphemy and an affront to those of us with morals. Tell him to walk upright and act in a manner according to his birth.

Baaaad idea. DO NOT argue religion with... well... anyone. Wars start that way. I may suggest what you say and listen to his response, but I have no inclination to try and change his way of thinking. My impression is that, in his view, an animal does not comprehend the concept of "suffering". So, there is none the way we understand it.

Academic anyway. He doesn't hunt. He's is a good guy though. It's not like he'd wound something then walk up and watch it for an hour while it dies. From the decade or so I've known him, my impression is that if he did hunt he'd finish the job just as quick as any hunter. Just not for the same reason.

Seems to me that some things really aren't worth worrying about. We know, for instance, than some religions DO believe that animals have souls.

So what? Me, I just write it off as different strokes for different folks and go on down my own road. I don't want to bug anybody about what I believe, and I think it's no more than courtesy and fair play that others do the same.

That's part of howcome I don't have any history of ulcers or ever got all eat up with the nervous. And why my wrinkles come from grinning, not frowning.

I try my very best to just make it quick and clean with one shot. I've made some shots that didn't do the job right away, and I do feel some remorse from that bit of suffering that I witnessed.

only a pedophile, murderer, or rapist deserve a slow death. Respect for the game is of utmost concern, as I do not hunt to merely kill, but kill to harvest an animal. In closing I will say that a humane kill, an instant kill, is what you want, out of respect for the animal.

Video death.

I shot a doetag last week where I put the animal down in place with a Eddystone P17 and HXP 30-06 but the shot hit high and she was still alive. I didn't waste any time getting down to her and walked up and shot her in the head with a Les Baer .45. I videoed the walk-up and the shot, just like I had videoed her crossing the field. The first vid is on youtube, (search for Blackfork6) but the second isn't. It's not bloody but it's very graphic. I'm still sorting it out. She was out when I walked up but I had seen her thrash and raise her head so I had my pistol out and ready. Went I got close I clicked off the safety, she heard it and tried to get up. As soon as she settled a little I shot her between the eyes. She immediatly rolled out and died and you can see it on the video.

My girlfriend is voting no on the video, even though she says its one of the most dramatic things she has ever seen.

The less the suffering, even if you are making war on pigs, the better for everything. This hunting stuff is rough and the responsibility level very high.

I've only killed one animal before that wasn't a fish. It was a bird that a cat had gotten a hold of. The cat left it there without finishing it off, so I did it to end its suffering.

I did go deep sea fishing once and caught a 8 foot, 120 lb marlin. I would have let it go, but the owner of the boat wanted it for food (I guess). So, he clubbed him and brought him on board.

And with the fish, I've eaten all the fish I've caught (except for the Marlin, but I had no choice).

If I were asked to go hunting, I'd love to go, but I'd want to consume the product. In other words, I wouldn't just kill for the sake of killing it. And along those lines, I'd want it to be a fast, clean kill. I have no reason for it other than it seems right to me.

personally i feel it is my duty as a hunter to make an ethical kill no mater what the animal is, no matter what it has done. no animal deserves to suffer. even if it does kill a calf, or a pet, it is only doing what is natural to it. it is its will to survive. have i killed animals with less than optimal cartridges? yes. but i know my guns and what they are capable of. i will not take a shot at something that i dont believe that i can kill quickly and cleanly. for example i have killed several hogs with a 22lr. but only with close shots and on smaller animals. personally i feel remorse if i let so much as a squirrel or rabbit get away. i think it is every hunters responsibility to make as ethical clean and humane kill as possible. personnaly i would feel less remorse at wounding an intruder/theif/etc than i would an animal. animals are only trying to survive in the way they know best
