In anything ones does, there are some best kept secrets.

These best kept secrets are those things that over time have proven themselves time and time again, and are proven, with factual data to back them up.

Some of these get put down on paper, some are just passed down and around by word of mouth, like a family recipe.

Some are forgotten, then remembered at a later time.
Time does that with new ideologies , technologies and advances, and still gargling with salt water helps a sore throat no matter what time period the calendar says or advances may be in vogue and recommended by the medical community.

Shotguns and use of Shotguns have some best kept secrets too.

-Semi-Auto 20 ga is a best kept secret.
-Learning to shoot with a 28 ga is another.
-Gun fit to shooter is timeless.

There are other best kept secrets pertaining to shotguns and the use of shotguns ...

Acceptance is the key, denial impedes growth and delays maturity.

Everyone has the right to make choices, and one is responsible for choices they make.

Baking soda will not scratch sinks, tubs and tile and still clean them well, still some wonder why the new and fangled that cost more scratched the sinks, tubs and tiles...

-A bird beats a shooter out of the house, because the shooter moved his hold point closer to the house, not because the bird was pulled faster...

Anyone else got any best kept secrets?

This is advice from my father

Ladies and Gentlemen-
I am a youth, however, I have learned one phrase rings true, in all my trips to the range- "beware the man with one gun." I have been outshot innumerable times by retired deputies, DPS, police, vets with their model 10s, 19s, 27s, at the range. As my father is wont to say, when I joshed him for being hold "you better learn from me, so that you to can make it to my age."

This is just my 2 cents.

it ain't the gun, it's the shooter.

that bird/clay that you just missed isn't REALLY an impossible shot. it's just impossible for you, right now.

Lessons more than pay for themselves. (esp with the ridiculous cost of ammo)

Sporting clays is more addictive than crack.

fit and stance are everything.

The best kept secret in shotgunning is the extra instant. It's the tenth of a second maybe even less to focus harder on a target when it's in the air. More shots, whether clay or feathered, are missed because of rushing the shot. Take the extra instant. Look harder at the target. It makes a difference.

Another is that if you are shooting sporting clays practice how to hit a dropping target. Play "closest to the ground" when you practice.

From "Pops", long deceased grandfather:

"Watch out where you point that thang, 'cause there ain't no calling back a bullet."

Statement frequently delivered about 1 second ahead of a whompin' upside the head, for forgetting stated sage advice.

You always have more time than you think". Pop, when I hurried a shot on a pheasant and then watched it in range long enough to say five cusswords before he killled it.

Never bet against the guy with a 20 gauge Model 12 with no bluing and missing the bead.

From my father -- "You won't learn anything when your mouth is open". He encouraged to listen to those "old guys" in the field. They are a wealth of knowledge if you listen up.

Words of wisdom from my grandpappy.

"If a fella in a back alley bets you he can make the queen of hearts levitate out of a deck of cards, circle your head 3 times and spit in your eye, walk away. Take that bet and he'll walk off with your money and you'll walk off with a wet eye." Now sure, he could have just said "don't bet on a sure thing." but where's the fun in that?

I aked him once how he got so far in the oil business when he only had a 6th grade education. He said it was because he could do 3 things that most people couldn't, "accept, adapt, and improve" Said most folks will spend all day cussing about something they can't change. Said he looked smart because he was quick.

And one of my favorites, "If you're stuck in fight, keep your eye on that one eyed old man with a limp. He made it this far for some reason"

When you're hunting, before you start to move the gun for the shot, take a step (left foot for a right-handed shooter, right foot for a lefty) in the direction the bird is flying. This simple act automatically gets your body position just about right, and keeps your weight forward, so that you're in a balanced position.

The best way to get more birds in the bag is to have a really good dog. ;)

Light-Mod chokes are like magic.

And...

Don't tell anyone, but most shotguns can be very dirty and still work just fine.

The best kept secret is..............

the Single Shot Shotgun of course.

Simply and effective and just an absolute pleasure to shoot and handle. Beats the tar out of carrying a heavy semi-auto or pump afield all day long.

The best kept secret is..............

the Single Shot Shotgun of course.

I took a shotgun course from Bill Davison at Tac Pro Shooting Center. We had a little contest. We had to start with an empty gun, and tried to shoot down 6 steel plates before our opponent. My opponent was Bill Davison using a Greener falling block 12 ga. single shot shotgun. I was using my 870. Bill shot down all 6 plates before I got the 870 loaded. Never discount the single shot. Believe me, you would not want to face Bill with his Greener.

Why the hell would you go into the field with an unloaded shotgun and load it when the pheasant starts flying?

"Why the hell would you go into the field with an unloaded shotgun and load it when the pheasant starts flying?"

Simple, you've unloaded your gun to cross a fence. As soon as you cross the quarry jumps up and you need to load the gun.

You do unload when crossing fences and obstacles don't you?

John

I've unloaded to cross fences religiously and will again. I also unload to answer Nature's call. and I've had to throw a shell in fast when something gets up right after.

Even made the shot, sometimes....
