I'm normally very wordy, so I'm going to try to keep this short by bullet pointing.

  • Live in NY currently, don't plan to get a NY pistol permit, as it's freakin' $300.
  • Bought a Hi-Point 995 for less than $200
  • Plan to dress it up and make it a bit nicer soon. (ATI stock, Bushman handle, barrel shroud, etc...)
  • Wanted to shoot it, ya know, to make sure it works. (Issues with feeding 2nd round every time, already have an email in to Hi-Point.)

So, I went to Gander to find some ammo. White box Winchester for $24 per 100 rounds? Ok, I'll take a box. Then the guy tells me he needs to see my pistol permit. Sorry man, no permit, this is for a pistol caliber carbine.

He looks at me like he has no clue. So I tried to explain. "Short rifle that fires pistol ammo?" Still blank. "It's a 995 by Hi-Point."

Then he basically calls me a liar and says nobody makes rifles that fire pistol ammo. "Really? You've never heard of, oh, AN UZI?" He tells me of course he has heard of UZIs, but that they are sub-machine guns. Sure are, but they have PISTOL CALIBER CARBINES with fixed stocks for those of us who live in fascist states like NY.

10 minutes later, he finally gives me the ammo and tells me to bring my permit the next time. The one I don't have? Sure, I'll do that, jackass.

So, today, I decided "Screw gander, I'll go to Wally world." EHHHHHHN! Wrong answer. The manager at the firearms counter acted like I was a criminal, asking for pistol ammo without a permit. Then he told me it was against the law to sell it without a pistol permit.

Of course right in front of him is a large sign with HUGE letters saying that in order to buy pistol ammo you have to be 21. NOWHERE does it state you have to have a pistol permit.

Does anybody else get hassled like this buying ammo for a Hi-Point, CX4, or other PCC? Or am I just lucky? :cuss:

I'm sure a gun store won't give you a hard time. I usually go to PA to get store bought ammo anyway, but really, most of my ammo comes from aimsurplus.com and others

Plus a million to NY gun shops. I have had my best customer service experiences at NY gun shops. Seems to me the gun shop owners who refuse to back down to political pressures take extra care to retain their clientelle. I wont shop at Walmart due to their stance on firearms any longer. If I was still living in NY I woud spend money at gun shops as opposed to retail chain stores for the same reason.

Ive run into a similar issue buying ammunition for my 9mm CX4 because I am under 21.

Sad to say that the store was a locally run shop and when I asked to speak to the manager, the person i was talking to was the manager and wouldnt call the state police to check the laws so i have yet to return to that shop.
I really did enjoy that shop and did my best to be polite, was horribly offended when they wouldn't check behind themselves.

Bring the rifle to the store in a case and show it to them.

Easier than arguing.

You can even play stupid.
Tell them you need ammunition for "this rifle."

Like you don't know what ammo it takes.

I think it would be worth it for the entertainment value at least.

How far from PA are you? If you can make the drive, I never had any trouble buying ammo for any gun here.

Are there any restrictions that keep you from ordering online?

I also second the idea of hitting a gun store. Maybe it isn't as difficult when the guy you're buying the ammo from isn't a moron.

Not to hijack, but the earlier post re: elected "oaf-ishuls" is as valid as it ever was.

If we're not careful, we'll all have to "live there." Nothing the Congress or Senate tries to pass, surprises me anymore. And I never really considered myself to be cynical. hmmm.

Mark in Birmingham (that would be Alabama)
still *relatively* free

Happens a lot at chain stores. Some wont sell .22lr to someone under 21, however dont have a problem with selling them .223.

I'll echo the "go to a gunstore" comments.

Did you vote for Schumer and Clinton?

Schumer and Clinton, as US Senators, do not make state law. The OP's beef is with stupid clerks and stupid laws.

(And yes, I am aware of Schumer's tenure in the state legislature.)

I live in Texas; While the U.S. was bribing us to join the union , here is
what we got;
We can fly our flag as high , or higher , than the u.s. flag.
We can secede from the union, at any time, even just by Governor executive
order.
We have our own ability to raise our own standing army, and currently have
it's own active air force and air command.
We have 'castle doctrine', and it extends to our cars, our businesses, and our neighbor's property, if they so wish.
In Texas, when the doc slaps your !@ss at birth, you are given a revolver,
and a box of range ammo, in the crib.

Oh yeah, don't know if you are anywhere near Majestic Arms, I don't remember which island they are on, but give them a call, see if they can help you, or know where other stores are, that will be more civil.

I am actually looking into moving right across the border to PA, and also seriously considering Texas.

Also, I would have purchased from my dealer, but he was out of cheapo 9mm. I don't mind being asked if it's for a rifle or a pistol when I go to a department store, but getting the attitude I got from both places is what set me off.

Thirdly, I am voting for Ron Paul even if he's not officially in the running. McCain, Clinton, and Obama are all jokers. I can't believe Clinton and Obama even have a chance after all the lies they have already been caught spreading.

Try bringing a Hi Point brochure, or your owners manual with you next time. Show the clerk the pic of the carbine, and tell him you have one and need ammo for it.

I find that hard to believe that Upstate you have this problem. Most of the world knows how NYC is but fails to realize that the rest of NY state is pretty pro gun. Truth is with the internet there is no reason to deal with a dimwit if you don't have a local gun store to patronize.

Actually, this sounds like a pretty good idea to me...

To answer the OP's question...has this happend to me?? NO, I live in Nevada, and have lived in TN, none of that BS.

I happen to have a CX-4 in 9mm (along with other 9mm pistols) and buy 9mm boxes at Wal-mart all the time, and there is such thing as pistol registration card (free) in Clark county, but I have never been asked to see it, because there is no such stupid law....

I'm afraid it's just a NY state thing.
