Arrests-Guns & Meth-Denver

I hope that I don't ignite a flame war, but I am delighted that these tweakers with guns were arrested. As everyone seems to agree, they couldn't have gotten close enough to Senator Obama to have killed him, or could they?

The Brady bill was a direct result of the actions of a deranged knothead, who shouldn't have been able to wound President Reagan and three others with a revolver, from across the street.

As far as I am concerned, there is no room for levity about whether or not these ne'er do wells could have killed someone.

So to summarize, to the media, a "sniper rifle" has only 3 necessary components to make it such:
1. Turnbolt or semi-auto
2. Centerfire cartridge
3. Scope

This reality needs to be publicized! Perhaps it'd wake up the Fudds who "don't hunt with an assault rifle".

There isn't any drama at the convention

I wouldn't say that; Denver PD, Denver county Sheriff, Aurora PD, etc. have been quite busy arresting 80 year old men leaving libraries and pepper spraying or rubber-bulleting crowds who get a little rambunctious. It is truly disgusting to see how our law enforcement is behaving down there. Citizens have no rights in Denver this week. It is a police state.

You couldn't pay me enough to drive downtown right now.

ANY scoped turnbolt (or semi-auto) rifle - in a centerfire round is a "sniper rifle" in the biased parlance of the media and their gun ban agenda.

A lot of people have been killed with .22 rimfire. I wonder if that makes my 100 dollar Marlin model 60 that came with a 4X high-powered scope a sniper rifle? It sure looks like one from the perspective of a squirrel.

Wierd. I haven't seen any of that on the news. I guess the Democrats don't like the first amendment to the Constitution any more than they like the second.

I know the politics of all this is off-topic so before this gets closed for getting too far off, would you and drgong post links to appropriate threads with links on these topics on APS?

[/QUOTE] There is no need for this criteria. My M1 carbine had a tasco 3-9x32 scope on it when I brought it home. I was reported to the local PD as a possible suspect in the DC"Sniper" case by my across the street neighbor. The carbine and the fact that my bosses work truck was a white former Uhaul box truck was enough to have the local Police pay me a visit.

I tend to think that these guys probably did intend to attempt an assassination of Obama. It just happened to be not possible considering the details of how they had it planned.

Yes, an Obama Presidency would mean that the Secret Service would be working overtime. But, guess what, the estimated perimeter the President has whenever he goes anywhere is around 1,000 yards. Possibly longer.

I remember when Bush came to KC. I was driving to work, and saw Secret Service countersnipers in 3 different places. If those were the ones I saw, there were probably another 6 (or more) I didn't see. And one of the easily visible teams was about 900 yards away.

Frankly, I doubt anyone can successfully shoot the Prez these days. I also doubt the Democratic or Republican nominees can be successfully assassinated in this manner. Especially @ a Convention. Especially with lockdown of this nature.

But, it sure sounds good as a story as far as the anti media goes. And, more importantly, with a Democratic Congress and an Obama as Prez, it'll help as propaganda for gun control that Obama obviously wants to pass (pretty obvious from his record in Illinois, and statements he's made in the past).

I wouldn't be surprised if attempts (that in any other administration would be kept hush-hush) are brought out in the open to advocate gun control.

Ah, anyway, back to topic, a scoped Ruger 10/22 wouldn't have a chance, and although a .270 would have the range, generally as has been pointed out, the Secret Service guards all of the best positions to take shots.

And frankly, I doubt a bunch of low-life tweakers would have even the first idea of what comprises a sniper's lair, let alone be able to keep steady enough to shoot (through a probably miscalibrated scope) @ much more than 25 yards distance.

By 22 Ruger, what 22 do they mean? A 22-250? 223? 22LR?

A 22-250 would be the ideal choice for a long distance shot. Low recoil for a quick follow up shot and a flat trajectory for minimal distance correction under stress. A 270 would also be an excellent choice.

I don't think these guys should be discounted at all. Similar losers did the OK City bombing.

I think this was very much the real thing. The guy who jumped from 6 stories up did so to avoid capture and questioning. That is a true believer in a cause.

The “just a couple of meth heads” is the cover for the assassins. Plus meth is threaded throughout White Power groups.

This was real and don’t think a shot could not have been made.

"Aurora is located about 25 minutes from Denver."

Yes, I have noticed that time warp every time I cross the border between Denver and Aurora.

Very strange feeling. Almost like weightlessness. You get dizzy for a second, then realize your watch has jumped 25 minutes.

I wouldn't blame the hyperbole on Dems or law enforcement, or anti-gun activists in this case -- I'd blame it on news companies that have spent millions to staff their coverage of the convention this week. If it happened in Colorado, it's convention related, and everything is going to be either a crisis or a triumph.

Problem is, this is frequently what happens with a lot of firearm-related news stories. "fool does something foolish" isn't worth reading. The issue of the firearm lets the "journalist" raise the possiblity of danger, and a quick wikipedia search can give some buzzwords to make the reader feel informed and "in the know." Folks on this forum just have enough personal experience to notice the breathless tone and the inaccurate info.

Supposedly the "22" may have been a .22-250:

Three men now under arrest in Denver on federal and local gun and drug charges spent last Saturday night discussing their hatred for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, according to documents made public by the government late Tuesday. One of the suspects allegedly talked about killing Obama on the "day of his Inauguration" using a .22-250 caliber sniper rifle and high-powered scope--the same model rifle that was found in one of the suspect's possession by police during a routine traffic stop last weekend. . . One of the guns, a Ruger Model M77 Mark II .22-250 rifle, was loaded and had a hunting scope and bipod shooting stand attached. A check on the gun disclosed that it had been stolen in Kansas in 2005, according to the documents. . . .
