400 arrested in nationwide meth sweep
Operation is first major action by feds targeting local cops' top drug priority
Updated: 1:59 p.m. ET Aug. 30, 2005

WASHINGTON - Police around the country have arrested more than 400 people in the first nationally coordinated operation aimed at producers and sellers of methamphetamine, officials said Tuesday.

Police in more than 200 cities and the Drug Enforcement Administration took part over the past week in Operation Wildfire, which also resulted in the seizure of more than 200 pounds of the drug and 56 labs where it was made.

The arrests follow intense criticism from members of Congress and local law enforcement that the federal government is not doing enough to combat the use of methamphetamine. More than the half the 500 sheriffs in a recent survey called meth their top problem, far surpassing cocaine and marijuana.

Methamphetamine, which can come in the form of a crystal-like powder or rocklike chunks, is an addictive stimulant that can be smoked, snorted, injected or taken orally. Its street names include “ice,” “crystal,” “speed” and “tina.” Meth can be made using ingredients in over-the-counter cold medicines, prompting a dozen states to pass laws forcing stores to remove medicines containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine from shelves.

At least 12 million people have tried meth, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Authorities have dismantled more than 50,000 clandestine meth labs since 2001.

While the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy continues to identify marijuana as the nation’s most substantial drug problem, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales recently said meth has overtaken marijuana as the greatest danger to children.

The Bush administration earlier this month announced a new training laboratory for police agencies and $16.2 million in grants to focus on treatment of meth addicts.

They didn't even pop a pimple on the ass of the beast....and they won't.

oh nothing more lovely than going over to People's Park and watching a 19 year old girl beat up her 29 year old boyfreiend cuz he shot up all the speed last night without giving her any.

freaking speed.

well this is horrible, but seeing how 99% of speedfreaks seem to either make their money helping younger kids get hooked, or doing small time robberies, i would REALLY not feel bad at all if a huge load of "hotshot" speed just killed ALL of them.

and i do some other not so legal stuff. speed is pure garbage.

If you want to keep your kids off drugs let them talk to a hardcore meth user. Their incoherent lies make sense only to themselves.

the STUPID thign is out here- we got SO many young kids with young parents - PARents on Meth, everyone they know is on meth.
this stupid 19 yr old girl im talking about- has been brought up thinking there is somethign wrong with people who DONT do meth.

so- sure, it really shouldnt be too hard for anyone to keep their own kids off meth- heck, i saw one speed freak and knew id never want to touch that stuff. (well, that and i have a hard enough time getting to sleep as it is)
but really, two minutes with a really high tweeker and anyone with a shred of sense would want ontihng to do with it.

BUT= dealing with all these losers who do it is another story.
at least heroin junkies get high and sick and in both states are useless.
even crackheads sleep, usually in the daytime, but they sleep.

speedfreaks dont sleep. they streal. they "tweek". mess with things,. fight real loud with each other, drive fast and wreck cars. shoot at police when they chase them, every ridiculous thing you can think of, these jerks are out there doing it. and their parents taught them it was all totally cool.

it's a HUGe problem here.

I think that we should operate facilities that offer free meth, as much as you want. You can do all you want on the condition that you cant leave the building untill 24 hourse since you last used. I figure as long as we put drains in the floors and dig a nice deep pit every week or so we could solve the whole problem in about a month.

A nationwide sweep in 200 cities netted a total of 400 arrests? Does this seem a little inefficient? It sure seems like a small reward for a huge effort.

How many of the 400 are back on the street now?

Regards.

Especially when you consider that states like Washington had in the area of 60 arrests themselves. This would seem to indicate that there were some cities that netted a total of *one* arrest.

I don't see 400 arrests as a success. How many days will it take to replace those four hundred? I am betting less than a week. There will be no drop in the supply. Sorry to be pessimistic.

If this is considered a major action I think we have lost the war.

+1

Anyone else here see the movie "Supersize Me"?

One statement the reporter made was (paraphrased): "If I ever have a kid, each and every time we drive by a Macdonald's, I'm going to punch him in the jaw." :)
