So i saw a pretty decent 10/22 at my local cabela's today. Filled out the paper work and all, show them my CCW and my driver's license. It was late so the NICS will have to be done tomorrow, meaning i will probably be picking it up tomorrow...fine up to this point, but I was told i have to bring my passport in also? pass what? I have been buying guns at different places thru out the years and never got ask for this. Anyone else got ask this at Cabelas? I personally do not carry my passport around. I don't know if the guy were giving me a hardtime by asking me to bring in passport tomorrow. I personally don't even have my passport at the house (safe deposit box). Maybe I should bring my business else where?

The sales associate needs more training, I think. If necessary, get a manager to clear it.

Hmmm, I actually tried to use my passport to buy a gun once, and was told that it wasn't a valid ID for firearms purchase.
Why? (I don't have a passport.) Does it not show your address?

Your passport does not show an official address of record (there's a space where it is suggested you pencil your current one in in case of emergencies), since its good for 10 years the State Department would be super-busy doing free corrections if one was printed.

IIRC, if you have both a passport and a utility bill showing your address you can buy a gun.

Tell him that you are not a member of the World Community, don't own a passport, have never left this country, and until someone builds a better one you have no intention of doing so. :)

A passport is only required when crossing international borders (oh wait, that only applies if you choose to obey the law, but let's not go there ) and has nothing to do with firearm purchases.

Go somewhere else for your purchases, and talk to the management at this store. A certain sales associate needs a new job (or a new career).

NICS stays open VERY late. The guy just didn't want to do his job, or was completely incompetent; in most states, the CCW pre-empts the need for a NICS check to begin with, and the DL suffices for the ID required.

Then again, you live in the NE, so your rights may be a wee bit more restricted than those of us in "free" states.

There is no Federal requirement to show a passport to buy a gun. Perhaps this is something Cabella's is doing on their own. You ought to challenge the clerk to show why he is asking.

You might want to research and print up a copy of CT's current laws, and take it with you. Long gun ownership laws are generally much less onerous than those for handguns.

I don't know if that is true. I have been around the world three times, and have never owned, or needed a passport. :D

Lionken07, Dear Sir, Please take your business to Newington Gun Exchange.
If Newington is too far, perhaps you could try K5 Arms in Milford.
They both have a small website.
If you buy from the little guys, the service will likely be superior.
Cabelas is a huge company which does not "need" your business.
I am speaking of experience.

Our CT transactions may go through our states DPS and they close at 5 on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday.

Ditto that p2000sk... Newington Gun Exchange all the way. By far the most knowledgeable, curteous (except sometimes when they are really really busy. Saturday morning during hunting season comes to mind). They stand behind everything they sell... And No Passport required.

Never asked for a passport when I sold firearms! :) Went around the world myself, no passport, but I had a whole buncha buddies in blue with me to vouch for who I was...

I was in a drugstore trying to buy over the counter allergy medicine with pseudoephedrine in it. In Ohio this requires signing the book and showing a photo ID. Showed them my passport which confused them because the form only had a column for DL. After some discussion between the counter person and her supervisor she pointed in frustration with me at the sign on the counter specifying the requirements. It said that a government issued photo ID was required. I mentioned that I thought that a passport was a government issued photo ID. Another teachable moment.

Passport???

My wife is a FFL holder, I retired recently, from Immigration now CBP, and the PP is not required except for entry into the USA. The PP shows citizenship and country of birth and is not a requirement for firearms purchase. I'm sure that clerk didn't even know how to read a PP to see if it was valid, real or bar-code readable. Print off a excerpt from CFR 27 and bring it with you and show it to the manager and ask how they got the authority to change Federal Law and still only earn min wage. I wonder if the would of sold you the firearm if you showed them a Canadian PP.

This is either the sales guy being wrong, or some asinine Cabela's policy. In CT, you only need a driver's license, and your pistol permit will allow you to avoid the waiting period. I think it is probably a mistake, because I for example don't even have a passport, and I know I am not the only one.

Very strange.

Its not Cabelas policy, at least not nationally. I've bought from Cabelas several times here in Fort Worth, and never been asked for any form of ID other than my drivers license.

Passport?

Suppose you are a Canadian, legal US resident, entitled to buy a firearm, and you wave a Canadian passport at this "clerk". Bet it would really get him wound around the axle.

Ask for Manager ... first for the department, and if they parrot that line, manager for the store.

I know of no state or city that requires a passport. Especially in your case as you have CCW which has covered all the ID/Citizenship hurdles. If they still insist then as if they have this a copy of this law/regulation available for review/reference, if the refuse to show it to you or try to double talk the matter then I'd let your feet do the talking ... walk out. Then if you still want to fiddle with this contact their corporate HQ.

I went in just to see what they will say and the guy wasn't there today. Ask them about the gun that i was about to buy and was told that they will go get it. Took them 30mins just to find the gun which they "hold" for me. I made sure they know that I'm not a happy camper. Like some of you said, i really shouldn't bring my business there. Nobody ask about the whole passport deal tho, maybe the guys just came out with that out of the blue...
