Minimum Number of Magazines?

For any of my "carry guns" 4 magazines (or loaders for revolvers) is the minimum.

For my competition guns 12 magazines or 24 moon clips or 12 speed loaders.

For my other stuff ... let's just say "quite a few" ;)

Three categories.

I've got guns I barely shoot, example would be a little .32 for when I can't carry a bigger gun, like swimshorts or such. It has three mags.

Guns that see regular use, but not for anything more than punching paper get about a half dozen, give or take one or two.

Guns that get used a lot, like carry guns or HD guns, a dozen or more isn't unreasonable.

I like a dozen per. For anything with a capacity greater than ten rounds, I'll probably spring for more.

As has been stated, there is no minimum. Some of us do, though, remember when there were no new mags over a certain capacity. Personally, I buy mags anytime I can get a good deal whether I've got the firearm they are for or not.

but for normal shooting, and target practice, what is the advantage?

I see you live in Michigan. Ever gone to an outdoor range in the dead of winter? Trust me, it's more fun to shoot than it is to load magazines when the temp is hanging below zero.

About ten or twelve years ago, I lived and worked in Michigan for a year and a half. All the ranges where I shot were run by the state, and you were required to single load each and every shot. It didn't matter how many magazines you had -- you could load them with only one round each.

I've only got three of the 13 rounders for my XD45.

For my sub-2000 i've go five of the 33 round mags.

Gotta get some more.

Many people carry three magazines when they go out. One in the weapon, and two spares. You should have a pair for practice, and a pair for back-up, in case one of the carry magazines fails, or is lost or damaged. That makes seven.

As was pointed out, the single largest failure in a semi-auto is the magazine. A minimum if two spares would seem prudent.

Rifles are a different world. Depending primarily on user. Just think about how many you'd carry in a bad time, realistically, and add in a pair of extras.:)

As Mentioned Above, Mags Are The Main Reason For Malfunctions, Bent Lips, weak Springs, etc. Its Best To Have Several Spares Avail To Use And Be Able To Use Your Gun ,now Instead Of Waiting To Locate Another. I Keep 6 Per Pistol, 3 Are Used All The Time And 3 Kept New. Buy Factory Or Well Know Manufactured Mags. Rifles I Keep 10-20 Mags For The Same Reason. I Also Keep A Jump Bag With 12 Mags For My Ar 15 Incase The Shtf. All Personal Taste But Remember What You Need To Keep The Gun Functional. :)

I have atleast 10 for each Rifle and pistol and like 30+ for the AKs...

Whatever you feel comfortable with...

Myself, I like to have several to keep loaded in the safe, several to take to the range, several to rotate in and out with the others mention and several to replace any lost / damaged ones...

Just as many as I can afford. I've got 20+ for my AR's and there's probably a group buy coming up and I'll be getting more.

I've got five or more for my 1911. Three for my Kahr. About five for my Uzi and I definitely need to buy more.

I own at least 10 mags for each rifle I own, as these would be the ones used when the S hits the fan. For pistols, my goal is to own 4-6 per.

What's this SHTF thing everyone keeps talking about?

I mean, I understand L.A. Riots, the Katrina aftermath, etc. But from the sound of it, it's like people are expecting Jericho (the post-apocalyptic TV show, not the ancient city).

Still I get the fear of another (perhaps permanent) AWB thing as I lived through that as well and paid $$$ for prebans.

I have eight or ten each for my FAL and AR-15, but only 2 for the GSG-5 and most of my pistols, save for the Colt Mark IV, which I have several for. Some of my guns I have only one for.

My rule is three loads for each gun (1 in, and 2 reloads) So for semi-auto's 3 magazines, and revolvers 2 speedloaders. That said, I have six mags for my XD9, four for my P6, four for my Mak, two speedloaders for my SP101, and I'm working on finding a second spare mag for my Beretta 21A.

I have no clue how many mags I have for the AK I have on order, but I know it's a bunch, and I know I'm getting more :D

when it is below zero, i stay in the house! i HATE cold weather. if it was not for my family, i would be somewhere MUCH warmer. it's funny how strong those family bonds are. for me, if it isnt above 10 degrees, i stay inside, unless i HAVE to go out.
