NEW YORK -- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, whose pro-gun stance has attracted criticism from fellow New York Democrats, has moved two rifles she kept under her bed for protection because of news reports about the weapons.

In a Newsday interview published earlier Monday, Gillibrand said she and her husband, Jonathan, kept the rifles to protect their upstate New York home. The couple has two young children.

Gillibrand spokesman Matt Canter told the newspaper in a story posted on the its Web site Monday evening that the rifles were removed for security reasons because their location had been reported. Gillibrand representatives didn't immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press on Monday evening.

Canter said the rifles were not loaded and the Gillibrands follow gun-safety procedures. He would not say if they kept ammunition nearby.

Gillibrand was a little-known second-term congresswoman from a rural Republican district when she was tapped by Gov. David Paterson to fill the Senate seat vacated by Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As a member of the House, she had earned a 100 percent rating from the National Rifle Association.

The day her appointment was announced, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy threatened a 2010 primary challenge. She was elected to Congress after her husband was killed and her son wounded in a shooting rampage on a Long Island Rail Road train in 1993.

Gillibrand has said that her views are broadening as she moves from representing one rural district to the entire state. She has said she would work to fight gun violence while still protecting hunters' rights.

Gillibrand told Newsday that while she and her husband don't hunt, her mother, brother and father do.

"I grew up in a house where my mom owns about eight guns," she said. "She keeps them in a gun case."

She has said she would work to fight gun violence while still protecting hunters' rights.

Former president Bill Cilton recently said much the same thing. It's going to be the Democrat's position on gun control. In other words...

You can own any firearm so long as we approve of it.

Don't expect a long list of approved guns...

I'd much rather she show her true colors now then after being elected for a full term.

It is an odd change of political position for someone that previously had high marks from the NRA and a good voting record for pro gun rights.

This just pandering to the very anti gun climate in NY. I really do think she is pro 2nd, it's just that she will likely collapse under the political pressure to change her position.

A) The 2nd Amendment says nothing about hunting. That overplayed line is about as bad as 'doing something for the children'.

B) Why was this even a story? Slow news day? She's moving her guns. Yippee. I moved one the other day. From the safe to the cleaning setup in the garage and back to the safe. I bet it was tired.

I saw a comment from one lady about this, and it was something like' I don't see why she needs two rifles'. Why is it that some folks do this? It's none of her business what another person 'needs', 'wants', or has. When did need and freedom become so intertwined? Freedom means that if I want ot buy something, I can.

Ugh. These are the kinds of people that the RKBA is up against. Blissninnied sheep, wholly dependent upon government, and having their gaze fixed firmly on the utopia that is sure to come.

Don't worry about her playing down her respect for the 2A. Nobody just "changes" their views in a month. She was appointed to represent an anti-gun state and has to win an election in 2 years. She is still very pro 2A and will remain so. I will not worry about her until her voting record gives me a reason to.

And think about it this way - Paterson could have appointed a lot worse (McCarthy)...

...the rifles were removed for security reasons because their location had been reported.

Gillibrand was further quoted, "I grew up in a house where my mom owns about eight guns, she keeps them in a gun case. Doh! I mean, not including the revolver by the nightstand. Aargh! At least I'm not going to mention the Kel-Tec in the cookie jar. Ay Caramba!"

People lack common sense, it's getting worse every day, I almost now just skip the news because it just annoys me to death, stuff keeps happening and these people either:
A. keep believing that what they think works and it obviously does not,
B. listen to what the talking heads say,

And I get berated when I make an attempt to try to address the problem, like I said people lack common sense.

...and having their gaze fixed firmly on the utopia that is sure to come.

Very well phrased...and downright chilling.

I've had conversations with people before on this whole "need" thing; sometimes it's the last people in the world you would expect to harbor such opinions. I think people are just ignorant. They are ridiculously ignorant and they are ridiculously insecure. They are so wrapped up in their own self-centered little world that they don't really understand what is Objective and rational.

They certainly think far differently than the way my brain works.

I bet the guns got moved to the closet. Makes sense, advertise that you don't have them there anymore.

I don't think she would have said the guns were for home protection if she was only for hunters rights. She could have used the "We are country, we always have had guns in the house" excuse, or the "We hunt every couple years," or the "My brother uses them when he comes to visit."

Usually this is from some of my female friends and I just say "why do you need all those shoes?", "or those purses for that matter?" Then their eyes glaze over and understanding hits them
