Does anyone know of a list or other resource that lists the number of CCW permits by state? Maybe as a % of total populace?

I was looking for something like this

Pierre, SD – Secretary of State Chris Nelson announced that a record number of concealed weapons permits were issued in South Dakota in 2008.

15,029 permits were issued by sheriffs throughout the state which was 16.9% more permits than the previous record of 12,855 issued in 2006.

Any person wishing to carry a weapon in a concealed manner must first obtain a permit from their local sheriff. A concealed weapons permit also allows the holder to avoid a waiting period when purchasing a handgun.

South Dakota has concealed weapons permit reciprocity with 23 other states allowing South Dakota permit holders to have their permits recognized when traveling in those states. A complete listing of the reciprocity states can be found at www.sdsos.gov.

There are 49,870 concealed weapons permit holders in South Dakota.

So with a population of 754,844 people, almost 7% have a CCW permit.

Calculating from PA's old CCW percentage of about 6.7%, applied to last year's population numbers gets me around 835,000 License to Carry Firearms holders here.

That's up from the old number I'd always seen of 650,000, but I don't know what year that was from.

Still 835K has got to be pretty well up there.

That's a good list, except that it's based on 6 year-old data, and a lot can change in that time.

I believe Ken G. (the author of that list) is working on a revised national state by state count.

The first time that I compared Indiana's numbers to Tennessee, I was real surprised. And, there are law abiding citizens that haven't got around to applying. ;)

Arkansas is trying or did bury the CCW Holder's information so that they dont become targets for gun thefts.

They think off hand at about a percentage are CCW holders.

I have a feeling that there are at least several hundred in my area due to the number and frequency of CCW classes each month in several locations.

I'm ashamed at the rank Colorado sits on that list.

Remember, CoRoMo, that list is several years old. The current "shall issue" laws in Colorado didn't take effect until mid-2003 and the date on that blog post was 12/04, meaning the data was probably already several months old at a minimum. I'm confident it's a much higher percentage than that now.

I had 38 students in my CCW class at Sportsman's Warehouse on Sunday. Slowly but surely...

I would assume that New York has probably over a million because you MUST have a carry license in order to POSSES a handgun anywhere in the state. So technically, that would probably put New York on top of the others, plus New York has a lot of people in general.

While you do need a license to possess a handgun at all in that absurdly draconian state, the license can be "restricted" or "unrestricted" (and it seems any number of different shades of "unrestricted" license are available). Restricted simply allows you to have it in your house or place of business. (How generous of them. :barf:) An "unrestricted" license is what will allow you to carry it with you -- in what ever locations the issuing officer has chosen to allow.

I seriously doubt every handgun owner in NY state went to the trouble of applying for -- and was granted -- an unrestricted license.

Considering all the hassle and downright oppression of that state when it comes to guns, I'd be very surprised to find that they're out of the bottom 10% when it comes to folks actually licensed to carry. They sure didn't make the list linked above...

I'm here in Florida, taugh fifteen at my house Sunday, we go to the range this Saturday, and I've got fifty more people who want to take my classes. I'm an NRA certified pistol instructor. And kids at my lawschool are chomping at the bit but I want to get down to a backlog of twenty before I bother with them.

In 2002, the odds of encountering another adult* in Michigan with a lawful concealed pistol permit (CPL) was 1 in 133. In 2005, the odds diminished to 1 in 56. By the close of 2007 the estimated odds should be approximately 1 in 46.

– Based on Michigan census data and Michigan State Police CPL reports. *adult = 21 yrs or older.

I know that there is a HUGE difference between the number of permit holders who don't carry and the number of those who do carry.

I've met a great many permit holders in my days, but I don't personally know a single person who carries on a regular basis like I do. Maybe they're just living by 'concealed means concealed' because of all the permit holders I've ever come across, only my father and brothers know that I carry everyday/everywhere. Nobody else knows because nobody needs to.

What about this question. What state's CCW permits are accepted the most by other states. I think I heard that it was Florida. Any idea?
