In which states can you still buy a firearm from a local private seller

New Mexico has "universal background checks" but there's no gun registration here at all other than 4473s, the law is completely unenforceable, all but 2 sheriffs in the state came out against the law saying they won't enforce it, there's nothing prohibiting 2 people from crossing state lines to say texas, making the transaction and coming back, or selling an old gun and saying it was sold before the law went into effect.

Pa only has restrictions on transferring Handguns. None what so ever on rifles and shotguns.

Pa has a partial handgun registry. If you move in from out of state, you are not required to register your handguns. If you inherit from close family (parent, grandparent) you don't have to transfer...or gifts from the same people.

Pa is unique also where the PA state police hold the records...nobody else can access them. While I'd prefer there not be a registry at all, I don't have some faith in the PA state police. It is perhaps, the most professional and conservative forces in the nation. They don't play politics at all. They also don't tolerate outside forces screwing with them. Still, I think it's illegal for them to have that registry, but its been decades now and they still have it.

I've bought private party from a sheriff in NC..... not sure why it's on the list.

I guess the pistol purchase permit/ccw permit is why. The permit doesn't need be for any particular gun, and there is no registration or anything .

I saw mention of Ohio but will mention it again. Currently private sales person to person between Ohio residents are fine. Seller to ask if yoy the buyer are a resident of Ohio and if you are under any sort of gun disability (Legally can't own a gun). I currently have two handguns listed in these forums, private sale by owner, face t face and cash. While in Ohio I have a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) but recently Ohio adopted Constitutional Carry, So I can carry in states which honor my Ohio CHL license.

Initially it was a train wreck, Every little city and township It was a total mess. I drive to the range with Guna and but i drive through arears with deferrer laws and now I am a Criminal. All that BS ended when State set the law down and all state law trumps local crap.

Oh good grief

I don't think Michigan should be on that list.

Holy crap. That's almost half. By population it probably is more than half the country.

Thank Goodness that some similar new laws will help prevent Thousands of deaths from (Illegal) Fentanyl Overdoses.

A friend’s son’s late girlfriend, and a fellow Krav student’s grown daughter would be alive , if we had new laws?

Who could be so stupidly naïve?

Holy crap. That's almost half. By population it probably is more than half the country.

The list of restricted states is nearly half of states, but also consider, these are most of the most populous states in the Union. Missing Texas, which is #2, the rest of the top 5 most populous states are restricted - and acknowledging, California has as many people as any other 2 states combined, excluding Texas. 1 in 8 Americans live in California. (On the “Free” side, 1 in 10 Americans live in Texas). About 1 out of every 15 Americans live in New York and Florida, with about 1 in 30 in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and North Carolina from that list. Alternatively, the “Free” state of Wyoming is home to only 15 out of every 10,000 Americans, Kansas is only 1 out of every 100, Nebraska 1 in 200…

This is why America employs an electorate system, and this is why it’s so easy for what seem to many of us to be ridiculous laws to be passed - “MOST Americans,” meaning literally over half of us, live in one of ~35 metro areas in less than 20 states… Alternatively, the other HALF of us are distributed between non-metro, Rural America (about 1 in 6 of us) plus another ~340 Metro areas. So it’s really even worse than HALF of Americans living in only 9 states - it’s the fact HALF of Americans live in metro areas of more than 2 million people. Pretty unrealistic for folks from small towns in Rural America (1/6th of us) to understand what’s going on in a metro area of over 5 million people (1/3 of us), and vice versa.

The interesting thing about Massachusetts is that you have to have a Gun Permit to own and carry a firearm. Once you have that license though you can do private party transfers in State without too much of an issue. It's done through a State Web Site and takes about 5 minutes time to do a transfer. As a buyer you can acquire as many guns as you want this way. For a seller you're allowed 4 sales this way in a calendar year. When it comes to Private Transfers it's about the only non-draconian thing about this state when it comes to firearms.

You say Good Grief but this list is nearly half the country. Thanks for the list though.

Wisconsin probably won't last long after the April Supreme Court election. Sorros is pouring hundreds of millions into hate ads against the conservative, after he paid millions to attack his opponent in the primary.

We need a couple more Pro Gun decision from the Supreme Court to help turn that tide.

The only states that currently have any type of restriction on private party sales:California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Hawaii Illinois Maryland Massachusetts Michigan Minnesota Nebraska...

Being in Kansas, I'm constantly shocked that Nebraska seems to be the outlier here for our area. Partially because the wildest gun show I've ever seen was in Lincoln, complete with a couple of complete characters running for President, a Confederate collector in his rebel uniform surrounded by his million dollar collection (with a battle flag from Lee's Army of Virginia at the center). An island of lost souls out here in flyover country....NEBRASKA!

I just can't figure it out. But what do I know...Kansas switches parties in the governor's mansion every other election, but in between is solidly red at every other level. Go figure.

Private sale for long guns in MI is ok for now. It will unfortunately probably change in nthe next month
