Some people are looking for 1 rifle that does it all-----others say get 1 for each circumstance. So the answer must lie somewhere in between. So I ask you, how many rifles do you need? Plinking, paper, target, clay, skeet, rabbit, bird, deer, bear, shtf, long range, home defense, scope, iron, cqc, round capacity, semi, bolt, FAL, AR, .223, .308, collectible, coolness, folding, portability etc...So how many do you need and for what purpose(s)?

Target shooting: For me, it would be one rimfire and one rifle for cheap hi-power practice, another for serious hi-power shooting and actual matches. One of these could probably cover varmint and maybe deer or other medium game. (If I weren't restricted to slugs) Then maybe a rifle for large north American game and defense from such. Finally, a self-defense rifle.

Stating that there is a difference between need and want doesn't infringe on anyone's rights.

It's a bit difficult to say really. When I have defined what I need, then it's time to specify what my wife needs, and what I need to buy for each of my boys while I still can. It starts to add up.

Ideally, I would have three or four Remington 700s with identical setups in different calibers. 22-250, 243, 30-06, 338 magnum, something along those lines, to cover the full range of distance and energy. For SHTF and or HD, I already have a variety of shotguns and combat-intended rifles to use. I pretty much use one shotgun for everything, but I suppose if I were rich, I might diversify to one HD gun, one clay target gun, and an upland gun to include turkeys. I have .22s, but I suppose I could say I need one child-sized one to start the young family members with.

Then you could get really specific, if you were into a shooting discipline that required a variety of calibers and frame sizes. My family's unspoken ethic has always been, if you don't have the time or money to use it, maintain it, and practice with it regularly, you probably don't need to own it. And while I would never tell someone they didn't have the need for one, I don't have time or money to keep guns I'm not going to use.

Minimum battery of rifles:

.22LR - plinking, small game, etc.
.243 Win - intermediate game
.30-06 - everything else

For my purposes, all would be scoped bolt actions. Add a 12 gauge pump and all the bases are covered.

I'm an American and "need" shouldn't have a d*** thing to do with how many guns I own.

roger that.

i own a carbine, a recce, two SPRs, a 7mm bolt gun, a mossberg, a couple .22s autos that are worthless for anything but kids... all have their intended purposes. carbine for home/CQB.. recce for scouting, SPRs for long shots, 7mm for taking down large amounts of food per shot, and 22s just seemed like the thing to do. the shotgun is an unknown to me, ive never even fired it.

do i NEED these guns for these purposes? no.. i WANT them for these purposes

My girl says no more than seven. It's an ongoing theme with her to limit my purchasing of firearms. I get to buy seven pistols, seven revolvers, seven rifles, etc. Luckily I convinced her that bolt actions and semi's should be in seperate categories, as well as shotguns.

I have a Win 70 in 7mm-08 and a Sears 22lr bolt, a pair of Marlin levers in 357 and 22lr, this does me quite well.
I would like a smaller reach out and touch varmint rifle in something like 22 Khornet or 218 bee, and I would also like a super lightweight AR.

I have liquidated most of my rifles and I am down to what I think I need. I hunt a lot of p-dogs in the summer, pronghorn, deer, and elk in the fall, and coyotes from late fall to early spring. I have three rifles in .204 Ruger, two in 22-250, a long range steel slapper/big game rifle in 7 mm Mag., and a backup in .30-.338. Of course I also have a .22 lr. I want a .243 or .260 to round things out, but I don't need one.

I don't need any, I could survive fine with just pistols and shotguns, no rifles. What I'd like however, is one of each and a very big house to keep them in.

Don't know many people that use rifles for clays, skeet, and birds......am I missing something here?

rifles for clays, skeet, and birds
Henry Bowman of course!

I probably will top out at around 25 unless I get interested in another shooting pursuit. Then, who knows? Let me think? Black Rifles.... hmmm, haven't hardly started to scratch that itch... hmm; bigger game..... hmmm; high end target rifles.... hmm; 416 Barrett... YES! I need one of them. Can't ever have too many.

You get the drift. Pointless question.

How many rifles do you need?

Oh, that's different; I think. However same answer.

Let me see I need....

4x .22s for me the wife and kids
2x .30 caliber Hunting rifles for me and the wife
2x SA MBRs for same
2x Night vision capable for same
Backups for all of the above.

Seems I got it all covered. YMMV :)
