Next week, I'm starting my initial search for a 9mm pistol. I'm going to my local range to test shoot 3 pistols. I'm wondering if my "requirements" for a 9mm would generate a list other than what I plan to shoot.

Currently, I'm looking at shooting Springfield XD, S&W M&P, and a Browning Hi Power. Truth be told, the Browning is out of my price range, but I'm still interested.

About me: I'm 6'2" and weigh 220. My hands are pretty big. I own a Glock21 and it fits my hands nicely. I love my Glock, but I don't want to just own Glocks, so please, no G19 recommendations. I want a 9mm for conceal carry purposes, but I don't want a subcompact because I want to be able to shoot comfortably at the range. I don't care if it's plastic or metal. My price range is between $500-700, though I might go higher is I find something that works really well for me.

Is there a different set of three that you would recommend for live fire comparison?

Thanks.

Try the Glock...still have mine, and like it...but shoot my HK P30 entirely now.

Good list, but...

I would shoot a CZ75, unless one ragged hole groups piss you off:p

About two weeks ago I picked up a M&P 9mm full size. I had been looking at them since they came out and had just never bought one. I came across a great deal that I could not pass up. Now, I have owned or still own all of the guns that you listed. All of them worked great for me, but none of them fit me quite as well as the M&P.

I love this gun. Not only is it accurate but it just feel so great in my hand. The only gun that feel any more comfortable is the HK P30. I have good sized hands and I thought that the medium back strap felt great. That was until I installed the small one, and I fell in love all over again. The small strap does away with the swell on the sides and removes a little from the back. It feels very similar to a 1911 in size to me.

Truthfully, I think you can not go wrong with any of them. I would just find what fits you best and go with it. S&W sure seems to have gotten it right, though.

Good luck,

Adam

Of the 9mm pistols out there -- at roughly the same size as the (firearm not mentioned as request'd) - I'd look at the M&P and the P229 -

I think a SIg P226/229 is near the price of a Hi-Power

Consider shooting a CZ 75B if one is available. Although in
profile it looks similar to a BHP, the trigger design is different
and the slide riales inside the frame is similar to the Sig 210
Also, the slide rails go forward to the end of the dust cover
/forward part of the fraem. My 75B is very accurate and over
1300 rounds = 100% reliable. See if you like the ergos.

I shot a Sig when I shot my G21. The angle on the 45 Sig was odd for me. I couldn't hit crap with it. It always raised high (or maybe it was low?), or should I say, it angled up (or low...can't remember) more than what was natural for my hand to correct. Do you think the 9mm version would be any different?

The Kahr K9 and P9 might qualify as subcompacts, but are still worth a look.

CZ Compact or PCR maybe?

Friend of mine just picked up a Stoeger Cougar that he likes. I have no reports from him yet since he tried it out at the range.

SIG P239?

XDm9

I am a little surprised no one has mentioned the XD it is similar to the Glock, but a little better ergonomics in my opinion than the Glock. The M&P is also great you could go with the full size or compact you will not notice much difference between the 2 sizes. The full size will be fairly concealable for someone your size. I can conceal my full size M&P .40 with just a polo when inside the waste band. Also the new Ruger might be worth looking into. I carry the M&P as a duty weapon and carry a XD45c more often than not when off duty and if I had to chose between the 2 I would go with the XD which says a lot because I love the M&P. Hope this helps.
Good Luck and Be Safe!

Try a Kahr T9, a CZ75B & a S&W M&P. I like Browning (FN) Hi-Powers as well...but experts suggest that they don't handle a steady diet of +P/+P+ 9mm ammo as well as more modern designs (+two barrel lugs).

CZ's are getting a lot of love. Maybe I'll replace the Browning with one...like I said before, the Brownings are approaching $1000, which is really out of my price range this year.

Any of the Walther 9mm guns are worth a serious look: the P5, the P5C, the P88C, the P99, the P99C, the PPS.

CZ 75 compact - I shot one at the range last week and fell in love with it. It will be my next puchase for CC.

XD, Mine is the older version, I like it. The new XDm seems to be doing very well too.
CZ I have a heavy SP01 thats one helluva shooter. Id like to check out the new P07. Only downfall is the std 75 mags wont work with it. My next CZ will probly be a 75b SS or an 85C b/c Im lefty.
My next purchase(may be) the Pistol Training edition M&P, factory trigger job and Warren Tact sights.

Those 3 are very good choices for every situation, and should be in the price range.
