My girlfriend and I are planning on getting out Concealed Carry Liscenses by the end of this summer. For this reason I would like to pick up a gun in the next month or so for the two of us to practice with since she has no experience with handguns and the majority of my experience is only with revolvers.

Since we can't afford a practice piece then two ccw pieces later (we are poor college seniors) I want to pick up a gun which will serve as one of our ccw pieces in the future so it will need to be a compact. Price range is $400-500 with a possibility of $600 max for one gun if it can be found in the range. All choice guns are 9mm since we will be learning basic pistol marksmanship with them.

The choices are as follows:
1. CZ 75 D PCR Compact 9mm
2. Smith & Wesson M&P Compact 9mm
3. Springfield Armory XD Subcompact 9mm
4. Glock G19 9mm
5. Armalite AR-24K 9mm

For all those that want to suggest I save up for an H&K USP Compact... well no duh, I have priced some very used models in the extreme limits of my price range and it is my favorite choice as of yet. These other options will be purchased new, which is my preference. Any other 9mm guns that are in a $400-500 range please suggest them in the posts below. If you have any experience with any of the guns I have listed please share I would greatly appreciate it.

Compact

Glock, in my opinion nothing on your list comes close. The H&K and the Sig are both too fat and un-handy. My opinion but it's based on owning a lot of pistols.
Look at the Glock Model 23, same size as the 19 but in .40 cal. with 13 round mag & 1 in the pipe. Very reliable, very accurate, relatively inexpensive. Only
negative is the trigger is not a target trigger thus hampering ultimate accuracy.
Trigger is fine for all real world applications ie combat, self defense, etc.

I don't own any of the above. But I handled the M&P compact and was very impressed. Especially with the adjustable grip panels. The trigger was nice and the slide was easy to rack. It's the nicest I've seen.

of course i have to say the xd sc, i own one in .40 and a service model as well. the sc is a great shooter, is the quickest pistol i have to get on target from the draw and is easy to conceal, but still packs plenty of accuracy. i love the xd's and the sc models are my favorite of them. the sc are like 2 guns in one, you can use the sc guns for concealed carry and then put in the full size magazines and go to town, so you have the concealability aspect and the capacity there if you need it.

you can't go wrong with the glock 19, either though. they are great shooters as well and i have owned one in the past, but this is really where it comes down to shooter preference. if it feels good and it is liked than go with the one that is most comfortable to hold, and shoot.

i prefer the ergonomics of the xd line up but both would mke great handguns and would serve you well for a long time to come.

While all the pistols you list are fine handguns, I'd choose a S&W 3913, sans luggage rack, over all of them. IMHO, it is the finest CCW produced. YMMV. TJ

From owning many, I realised that GLOCK is the one to beat. G19 will suit you and your GF well.

I would suggest that you also look at a Sig Sauer (or Sig Arms, same, same) P239 in 9MM. Frame mounted decocker, all steel, very (IMHO) acceptable action and accuracy.

Uaarguy: That Cornered Cat piece is excellent. Haven't seen that one before.

Glock.

If the Glock doesn't suit you for any reason, go with the XD.

Simplicity, durable, reliable.

(Oh, yeah, standard lecture: make sure whatever you get fits your hands.)

.

Will the woman feel comfortable manipulating the slide on any of them ?

This is a consideration, not a sexist jibe.

Even if you're set on Glock, try holding a CZ first. Glocks feel like a brick to me.

Do you want your GF to stick with shooting long and have fun? Then let her pick out the one that fits her best and she can shoot best. You'll be a much happier man in the long run.

Yeah she is going with me to the local gunstore in the next couple weeks to get a feel for all the possible guns. I really liked the Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Compact because of its easily changed grip sizes allowing it to fit both of us well with a quick grip change. Problem is she wants a nickel slide and I want all black and she's been real adament about that... I might cave and make this first handgun purchase be her "pretty" future ccw piece.

XD or CZ

I personally like the XD & CZ the best, but it is really a personal choice the CZ would be great because the added weight may help with the recoil and rapid fire is much quicker with some weight, that said you have to be comfortable carrying the weight. I love the XD's, I have a .45 Compact and the chopped grip option is great, and will most likely fit the lady's hand better than the Glock. Shoot them, my guess is the CZ will be the most comfortable. The M&P is good but the grip is too short for me, I don't like dangler's. The Armalite will probably be overpriced, not sure about that, and I am not sure how it could be better than the original, CZ!
Good Luck and Be Safe!

Ok, I know I am kind of in the wrong part of the forum here, but....If your experience is with a revolver, why aren't you looking at revolvers? You already have the experience, and they are great for beginners like your GF because they are such simple mechanisms. It does not have a slide to rack which can be difficult for many women.
Aside from anything else, there are some great deals on very good used revolvers out there that will cost much less than the semi's you are looking at.

I don't mean to push it. I'm just asking why not look at them as well?

IMHO. The Glock 19 is the Best 9mm ever made.:)

Don't short change yourself. If you were looking for a .40 I'd say HK or Sig.

After carrying the Glock 19 and feeling very Comfortable I've moved to the sub-compact Glock 26 only 1" shorter in length and .25" lower.

Get the Glock 19 you will be very happy. Also It's like buying a mercedes, it has great resale value.

There is a Group buy buy a member right now where you can get one for $450 probably $80 more for one with night sights. It's a good deal:D Chcek it out:

Taurus PT-111. Great gun at a great price. My wife loves hers. Some will bash the Taurus but we haven't experienced a problem yet. At $350 brand new, I am considering a PT-145 as my CCW.
