There are a lot of photos of the 9mm Taurus 709 Slim out there, even on the Taurus website, but they look absolutely nothing like the final gun.

This is the old one:

This is the new one:

I was lucky enough to handle the blued and titanium versions at the NRA show, and these little pocket pistols were my personal pick of the show.

Not too small, not too big, available with a magazine extender, and best of all fitted with a Glock style trigger that offered a re-strike capability for a failed round. Taurus actually describes the trigger as a short/light DA/SA trigger, but it was perfect to me.

Sights are 3 dot, capacity is 7+1 or 9+1 with the extender, barrel is 3.2 inches, weight is 19 oz for the blue or stainless and 17 oz for the titanium.

Pocket sized with a very cool angular looking frame and due out in roughly 3 months along with a new pocket 22, 25, and 380.

I know Taurus isn't universally popular, but I'm going to make one of these my first.

TCP must mean Taurus compact pistol, right? looks like a LCP and keltec. Seems like a nice gun though.

I liked the first version of the "slim" much better. They set a release quarter for it a long time ago then stopped that changed the gun and have set another release quarter. I'm not a fan of the new rendition. The old one had smoother lines which = concealed easier; especially around the rear of the gun at the back of the slide. Overall I just thought it looked better. However, I commend them for taking on this market. So far there are few options: Kahr, PPS, and this which isn't even out yet. I wish more manufacturers would take on the slim ultra compact 9mm market. I guess they have to let their .380's make money first. I also wish they'd sacrifice a round and shorten up the grip a little.

Does it have "real sights"? I'm a little disappointed with the sights on my LCP--worthless in low light.

Looks like usable low profile sights, it would be nice to have night sights as an option.

I'll be watching for one of these to handle in person at a local shop. It could be my first Taurus.

Yes they have real sights, 3 dots that were similar to Novaks.

Above all else the gun lives up to its name, it's very slim.

I'll be anxious to check it out. Wonder what the MSRP is going to be? I don't think I'll like that trigger, though. I prefer a long DA on a pocket gun. It looks more compact than my KT P11, but it's heavier, go figure. Another subcompact 9mm is always a good thing IMHO. I own 3 Taurus revolvers I like a lot, but I've never owned a Taurus auto. My son-in-law just got a NICE little .45 ACP PT145. I'm real impressed with that one after firing it quite a bit. Accurate, fed several hollowpoints fine, shot 300 rounds flawlessly out of it, and it's only 24 ounces dry, real easy to carry.

Wow. The original Slim model was objectively more "graceful" than the new one, which is....not as graceful. In other words, IMHO the new version is ugly. I certainly hope there was a legitimate engineering reason for the change.
